We stopped at Callahan’s along with many other wet, stranded people during the recent floods. They were so welcoming and kind, allowing us to stand around watching the weather report on tv, use restrooms, and dry off.
We were so thankful we went back to shop the next day! Like a good ol’ general store, they have animals like goats, chickens and rabbits. There is also a wide selection of hardware, tools, and garden equipment. Of course there is clothing: jeans, boots, cowboy hats, and jewelry. And finally home décor. All with friendly service! And it’s good to support local businesses. Go check this store out as soon as you can.

Once again I had excellent service. Mason went above and beyond to make sure all of my chicken needs were met. I now have a new gal to add to my flock. It is the great customer service that will keep me coming back again and again.

This Saturday, it made my day to walk into this store. Vibrant place and great things on the shelves to browse– for the garden and home. I was greeted with live music from a band called the Starlite Wranglers, pot-​bellies to pet, plants to buy outside, and jam from Common Sense Farming out in Leander. I went home happy with everything except the pig (no space)! I think I spoke with the owner/​manager who was by the door; he was all about the customer service. Overall a super experience.

this is the one stop shop for being out in the boonies. Although I thought the goats were a little on the expensive side at $ 150, esp. being you have to buy them in pairs or they go crazy. The chicks seemed to be in good shape.

This place makes you feel like you’re in a old time movie. The stuff they offer is unique and great for this urban farm girl. Not only can you get feed for your animals, but you can buy ducks, goats, baby pigs and chickens there. I love playing with the animals outside. You can grab your pet vaccinations too. The staff is always inviting and very knowledgable. I love there metal tubs for my garden plants. They have just about everything farm and garden related.

This place is one of a kind. Truly an iconic Austin landmark. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Huge selection of unique items to choose from.

We have purchased both chicks and ducks from here and were pleased each time. The staff is helpful and ready with advice if you are a city girl like me! Our chicks were healthy and we raised them to be fantastic egg layers! That’s really the only reason I can imagine going here over Home Depot though– the selection on other items is limited and more pricey.

I will not buy poultry here again. Last time I did I tried getting assurance in writing that the hens had foul pox vaccine. Several employees said I had to ask the manager but that they only took vaccinated birds. After visiting many days in a row and not being able to reach the Poultry Procurement Officer to get proof of vaccination, I reluctantly bought two, with promises that the hens were vaccinated for pox. Guess what? They currently have foul pox. Not to mention the smaller bird cages (pigeons, Roos) aren’t kept very clean.
Its also no picnic going to Callahan’s as a lone female. «Are you sure I can’t help you? Are you sure you don’t need me to carry that? You mean you want to pick out your own chickens?» Excuse me for wandering out of the canning section (which is the most expensive one in town.) Seriously, Breed & Co. has better prices on canning jars.

If you went to school here, you probably know that little ditty. Do other states do that? It’s weird.
This is such a fun place to waste some time, or if you are real cowboy or country bumpkin, actually get feed/​animals/​etc. Personally, I can find an excuse to shop wherever I go so I was checking out the clothes. They have a really good selection of true cowboy and outdoor wear. Everything was priced normally, but they have a large clearance section too.
They’ve got other Texan trinkets too, so I think this place would be fun to take out-​of-​towners who like to imagine we all ride horses to school. Because the people at Callahan’s might actually do that.
And, um, I GOT TO MEET A BABY LAMB so my life is complete. They’ve got pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits etc. I’m an animal lover, so that part was super fun.

I came to buy some purple horse reins and to my surprise I walked into a backwards twilight zone.
Here at Callahan’s they charge $ 28.99 for horse reins in a black or blue color. Then, no lie, they think its perfectly suitable to charge $ 38.99 for the same reins only in pink or purple.
Of course I ask to speak to the manager who wasn’t there but another Male employee comes to tell me its because their suppliers charge more therefore they have to. He liken the arrangement to car insurance companies that charge higher prices for cars painted red.
I guess the only win here is that I walked away knowing that women ride faster and harder then men and unfortunately we have to pay extra for that.

I have been curious to check out this place ever since moving to Austin a year ago. I pass by it ever time I am going to and from the airport. Finally one Saturday late afternoon I stopped in to check out exactly what this place was about. As I pulled in a live band was picking up, and the original food truck (a historic chuck wagon) was closing shop. It looks like Saturday afternoons are quite lively here.
Upon entering the store we were immediately greeted by the store’s mascot, Pinky (an adorable pet goat), and her friend. They were unfortunately crying out as their water was bone dry. We let a store clerk know, and they immediately refreshed the water bowl. There were also full grown chickens, the store owner mentioned they sell 300 – 400 chickens per week! The store has been around for sometime, and is family owned.
The store is huge; a country feed store on steroids. They have a bit of everything, from unique gifts, to kitchen supplies, pet items, bullwhips, clothes, you name it they have it. if you need any Texas related items to bring your new home up to code, this is the place to get the giant stars or flags. The prices also seemed reasonable.
For each section there seemed to be staff on hand to help you in that area. which is very nice, so you don’t have to run around trying to find someone. The hat section at the back was impressive, a full collection of Stetson’s. The guy mentioned that they have several large clearance sales throughout the year, and that we should come back during that time for some great sales. They also had a good sized boot area. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
As you walk towards the far left hand corner, the store gets a bit smellier and you will start to hear the sounds of little baby chicks. They also had rabbits, and baby ducks. The area is cramped, and while the owners seemed to have good intentions, the animals were in tight old rusty cages, which seemed to be leaking into the water troughs. Who knows when the water was changed, some of the water supply looked murkier than others. The lady also mentioned not to touch some of the rabbits as they were diseased, and mentioned something about free antibiotics with the purchase of the animals. The living conditions of the animals could probably use an upgrade.

This is a great place to find unique gifts, or to just stop in. The people working here are always friendly and welcoming. You will definitely find something that you didn’t even know you wanted: I had to basically get out of the store as fast as possible when I found a section of 8′ bullwhips. Didn’t even know that I needed one until I saw them…

If you have cityfolk visiting you, bring them here for an eye-​opening experience. I came on a Saturday once and there was a live band playing music in the front.
I went to Tomlinson’s Pet Store to buy some duck pellets and was referred here. Inside the store they have 10-​lb bags of «Capitol Feed and Mill» (Callahan’s store brand) duck, chicken, rabbit food and supplements right next to the door on the north side of the entrance. Near that, in front of the checkout counters, are 50-​lb bags of all sorts of organic chicken feed for different stages of development. The brand is Coyote Creek.
Bird food I’ve bought here:
— 10-​lb bags of corn chops (cracked corn for the unusually cold nights) = $ 5.00
— 50-​lb bag of corn chops = $ 8.85
— 10-​lb bags of duck and goose pellets = $ 5.00
— 50-​lb bag of duck and goose pellets = $ 12.15
— 5?- lb bag of crushed oyster shell (calcium for laying hens) = $ 1.25.
— birdseed that runs from $ 0.85 — $ 1.00 per pound
(If you get 50-​lb bags, then it’s cheaper.)
They have a wide variety of stuff. There are different types of farming tools, bird houses, bulk birdseed bins, books about raising animals, medicine for sick rural animals, feed containers, fruit and vegetable seed packets, clothing, baby goats, roosters, pet food, etc… The bulk birdseed bins include: wild bird feed, finch feed, pigeon/​dove feed, canary feed, millet, etc… Don’t use the brown paper sacks provided by the store to carry your birdseed because the seams at the bottom are poorly-​sealed and will leak birdseed. They do not provide markers and labels to write which kind of birdseed you got. The weigh scale is manual but easy to read. The cashier will also weigh it when she rings you up.
A huge warehouse wraps around the north and east side of the store where the employees can load up your tractor-​trailer, truck, or sedan with 50-​lb bags of feed, bales of hay, etc… You just tell the cashier inside what you want, she’ll ring up your order, you drive into the entrance in the middle of the store, wait at the stop sign, hand your receipt to the employee who tells you which number to drive to, pop open the trunk, and they’ll throw your purchase into your car.
The best room in Callahan’s is the chick/​rabbit/​duckling room on the way to the dog food warehouse in the back. The lady who manages that room is a great person.

THIS is what I’ve been looking for: what a beautiful aisle of nuts and bolts! Home Depot cannot compare. PLUS lots of cowboy hats and bull ropes! What more could you ask for?!?

Callahans is a pretty good seed and feed supply store. They sell baby chickens and sometimes goats. Great place to visit if you’re keeping chickens in the backyard. You can buy their feed here, but if you’ve got raccoons trying to eat your chickens, like I did, then you can get a live trap from Callahahans, too.
Over the years, they’ve filled more of their shelf space with Chinese-​made crap products, but they mostly still carry the legit goods.

This place is awesome! It’s been a long time since I’ve walked into a place where they seemed genuinely glad to have your business.
I was helped by a man named Mike, seemed like the owner. Anyhow, Not only did Mike go totally out of his way to help me he also gave me a short history lesson on the building. This place has everything you could possibly need. Thanks for the hay Mike, you are AWESOME!

I liked this place! I stopped here before taking a friend to the airport then came back after the airport to purchase guinea chicks (aka keets).
They have a good cast-​iron selection. They have gifts (great, because this is close to the airport!) Where’s a plush armadillo when you need one? There was live music probably because it was a Saturday, when everyone was there. I loved the Giant Runt pigeons they had!
This store reminds me a lot of Texas-​themed Lehman’s, but on a much smaller scale.
Chick room! Very nice chick room! It’s a separate room, out of the way of drafts and is kept at a warm, brooder temperature. Chicks are kept in racks with a running water system. Newborn chicks find water best when it drips, the noise is needed. A staff member was always in the room with the chicks ready to help, feeding and cleaning. Prices were reasonable and all the chicks I saw were healthy and vibrant.
I’m under the impression that the bad chick ratings are from new chicken owners who live in the city and want some birds in their back yard. Chicks shouldn’t be kept on wood shavings. The wood chip dust kicked up by active chicks aggravates their delicate respiratory systems.

On our way home and since we were on this side of Austin, I decided to stop and finally checkout this unique general store. I have never been here and seemed a lot of folks were here by the number of car (mostly trucks) parked here. Outside a vendor was selling hamburgers and hot dogs, and walked on in and encountering some small goats for sale. After admiring the goats I then see rabbits for sale. They were small and cuddly, and could pick them up and hold them. At the same time I see a band setting up to play.
Then I start exploring the store where they sell a variety of items like Texas gift items, western gear, hardware store items and tools as well as a huge assortment of items for your farm or ranch. I did end up finding an unique drill bit and found a room where they sell all kinds of baby chicks. They were kept separate along with information describing the hens and roosters, and they even had baby ducks for sale.
After walking out I notice people were walking out from back of the store what looked like their warehouse, so I ventured back there to find more supplies for animals like feed and fencing. It was quite warm back there so I was not going to stay long until my wife showed up to tell me to go through an entrance where larger animals were stored. So I go in there and it was an even larger warehouse where customers drive in to loaded their trucks up with sacks of feed, seed, and large items. I found the large animals for sale and they included large ducks, chickens, roosters, rabbits and even a hog. They also sell different variety of pigeons and white doves (perhaps for magicians). I walk back inside to checkout and take mental notes for items for later. As I say goodbye to the goats a lady outside was selling tamales and another selling ice cream.
So it was definitely a place to checkout and take out-​of-​towners to.
