Dr. Carter replaced my left hip on 2÷21÷2012. I am forever grateful that he did the surgery. I had no idea the increasing left hip pain over 3 years would culminate in my hip being replaced. I’m a young fifty and had spent many many years power walking, swimming and playing tennis. The degeneration really had no known etiology and I back peddled all the way to the day of surgery. Had the pain not been so intense I wouldn’t have done it. But, my God, I’m so much better for it. The day after total hip replacement through the anterior approach, I was walking the stairs in the hospital. Haven’t looked back since. One more thing, his entire staff is heavenly, caring and totally efficient. What a perfect experience.

Magnificent — marvelous — not enough adjectives to describe Dr. Carter’s wonderful work. My whole knee had grown horribly out to the right and he gave me an absolutely straight leg. I set off alarms at the airport because I forgot about my new knee.

Dr. Carter reconstructed not one — but BOTH of my ACLs (anterior cruciate ligaments) in two separate injuries years apart. This is major knee surgery. I am an extreme sports enthusiast. Both injuries came from extremely pounding tricks on a wakeboard. After surgery, I recovered fully. I am over 40 years old, and I can still perform all my favorite extreme sports (wakeboarding, snowboarding, running, swimming). He is a miracle worker. Shelby is also a down-​to-​earth personality, not an ego maniac. He is the best doctor I’ve ever used for any reason.

Dr. Shelby Carter is my hero! I spontaneously broke my hip 11 years ago (when I was 25 yrs old) while on vacation in New Orleans. They did emergency surgery there (hip screw and plate) and it never was quite right. 2 years later, after much pain, a leg that was about 1 inch shorter than my other and a severe limp… I sought out Dr. Carter. He told me immediately what the problem was… I had avascular necrosis of the femoral head… but he didn’t jump to an immediate hip replacement. Instead, he took the time to correspond with another top notch research orthopedic surgeon at Duke University to see if there would be any way to save my natural bone without undergoing a total hip replacement. It didn’t work out… I was not a candidate. After months of going back and forth… Dr. Carter performed a total hip replacement, and had I never told you that I had a prosthetic you would never know. This man saved my life as far as I’m concerned. I had suffered for so long as was ready to just throw in the towel on ever being «normal» again, when I somehow found this extremely talented surgeon. I have referred several patients to him who have also been very pleased. Yes… he has a very dry personality… but I love that about him. I don’t need my surgeon to coddle me… I need the hard cold truth. But what you learn as you go along with him as that he delivers this truth with nothing but utmost concern for his patients and a passion for what he does so well. Please… if you ever need an orthopedic specialist for any type of hip/​leg issues… don’t waste your time with anyone else. Seek out Shelby Carter. He will fix you right up! I could never say enough «thank you’s» to this Dr. and his office.
My husband has had problems with his hip for ten years, but we did not know exactly why.
We went to probably 30 different doctors over that time frame and they always said it was his back, his spine, his leg, his nerves, his neck, etc… and none of that was correct.
We constantly made costly appointments, did all kinds of crazy treatments for him, steroid injections, chiropractic work, medications, and NOTHING worked for nearly a decade!!!

Being a surgical technologist, I work in surgery with Shelby almost every day. I’ve never been a patient, but if I EVER EVER EVER needed any type of orthopedic (bone) surgery done, I’d go to him.
He’s an amazing, thorough surgeon. He specializes in total joint replacement, but is very adept at sports medicine and hand surgery as well.
His partners in Medical Park Orthopedics are amazing as well, definitely the place to go for bone problems!
