I wanted to love DaVine. When I first spotted it while driving by, it looked so inviting. Then came all the amazing reviews. While the food is probably excellent, my first visit was underwhelming because of the service. While waiting at a table near the trailer for our pizza, we saw a mishap where a fresh pizza went unclaimed for awhile(the customers had wandered off). Hmm, they should take peoples’ names and call them out when the food is ready, we thought. We then waited 30 minutes — the place was not busy, only one other customer was ahead of us. Finally we went to the window to ask. Oooh the box was just sitting there, who knows how long. The guy(one of the owners) had a blank look on his face as he handed it over, «Gee, I thought I called this out. Didn’t I?» Nope. No apologies, either. Even when we placed the order, he was not particularly friendly, no greeting, just a blank look. Even though the pizza was quite cold, I believe it *would* have been delicious when hot. Not sure I’ll make a second visit to find out.

Spelt waffles are fantastic. As are their tacos. My favorite, hands down is the pizza with its abundant tangy sauce and srouted spelt crust. The parking is a challenge, but a cinch to ride or walk to.

The staff is friendly and knowledgable, the variety and serving size of the lovely vegan food is awesome, and it’s within walking distance of where I work. I’d eat here every day if I could! Davine, where have you been all my life? :)

I took my boyfriend here, because he just recently discovered that he has food intolerances to gluten, cow milk, and eggs. It’s very hard for us to eat out and stay within those dietary restrictions, but I had read about Davine in the Chronicle. Neither of us are vegetarian, and we both loved this place! It’s also important to note that my boyfriend is a Kansas boy who LOVES meat. We ordered a pizza and a chocolate«milk“shake to split for lunch and they were both very delicious. The service was very nice and stopping there for a casual lunch was perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. The owners were working there that day and checked on customers and busted their asses along with their employees.

In my life, I’ve been haunted by those few culinary experiences that came as a complete surprise and were never to be repeated — like the nut-burger I had from a stall at the Glastonbury festival in 1999. Never before had I had such a combination of textures, flavors, and guiltless consumption — and never since, until last week when I stopped by DaVine Foods. Their nut-burger was amazing, with homemade beet dressing and salad greens on a whole wheat bun. I then split a pizza with a friend — the flavors were rich, the crust was crusty perfection! I was hooked in just one visit, and can’t wait to go back. Plus the staff was super delightful!

finally a new vegatarian place to make up for the losses of this year. The location at the enchanted forrest is a bit weird for parking — they can only get a few cars in there. I have parked across the street before at Office Depot, hopefully that will continue to be an option. Otherwise, it is pretty close to my neighborhood, so walking or biking is a piece of cake. The food is excellent — the pizza’s are delicious, the toppings do slide off a bit. I have also had the veggie burger, which is probably my favorite in Austin. I have heard the waffles are good, I will try them out soon.

I am not a vegetarian by any means; but, several of my friends are so I have been here several times and would return and bring my carnivore eating friends to prove that eating healthy can be very yummy. I have had the breakfast tacos and the pizza with extra mozzarella garlic and sun dried tomatoes both were very good. I am not really into burgers of any kind but my friend would not shut up about how good her veggie burger is so I take a little bite then ask for a bigger one. Sure nough they make a damn good veggie burger and the smoothies are very good too. I love to support local cafes that serve locally grown produce — earns them a full 5 stars.

Davine Foods just formally opened in the Enchanted Forest, and offers vegetarian and vegan, living and locally grown food options. They had a short stint in the lot at S. 1st and Riverside next to Torchy’s, but this new location should serve them well. I probably shouldn’t be reviewing them just yet. I went out to their grand opening, and despite my best tries, I only got a bite or two of their pizza due to them being unprepared for the crowds. From what I had, it was very promising, though. The toppings were sliding right off the sprouted flour crusts, but I’m sure it’d work out better if they weren’t attempting to feed hoards. I’m ready to try a whole one, and the chance to get to eat pizza without the guilt. I got word that the smoothies are good, too. And they seem to have a bunch of different drink options. The little bus and outdoor seating is very charming, with low-lit lanterns and succulents all about. They’re off to a rough start, but I hope they find their groove and find success in their new location. *Update* Every time I drive by, they’ve been hoppin’! Good for them! Also, I found out I may have a wheat sensitivity(boo!) so this may become my new regular spot. Yay!

The food is all VERY fresh, in that the owners farm it themselves! Talk about ‘local’ food. Though they will soon be found in the Enchanted Forest, it will be worth the trek. For only around $ 6 I had a huge bowl of delicious tempeh chili, a refreshing cucumber salad, and a soda. Have yet to try their vegan desserts, but I’ll be back. They have very festive outdoor seating, and really friendly staff. Perfect for these warm evenings we seem to be having lately…

UPDATE: I’ve been there since the beginning, and for a while, things were looking 5 star. The waffles and pizzas, wheat free and perfectly crisp. The smoothies, nutritious and delicious. But lately… the quality has been spotty, and the service pretty poor. I really, really want them to turn this back around, because the concept is superb. But too often to be excusable, they don’t answer the phones, aren’t open when they say they’ll be, and serve up dry pizza. Also, the waffles are off the menu. Sad day! — — – Best smoothies ever. I can’t vouch for the rest of the food, but the menu manages to sound simultaneously delicious and thoroughly good for you. I can’t wait to try it. When I do maybe it’ll get 5 stars. Now located at the Enchanted Forest on Oltorf just off Lamar, organic food made with love and served out of a brightly painted trailer.
