DoubleTree By Hilton Austin-University Area

I’m searching for words to describe my disappointment with this Faux Double Tree. 1^st, it is not a Double Tree hotel. It was some other hotel that now bears the name DoubleTree. 2^nd, it is NOT downtown. It is on the opposite side of the freeway, with only a chain link fence that separates it from a graveyard. 3^rd, the furniture is dated and worn, the fixtures were barely hanging on and there were holes in the walls which probably explains why I was greeted with a roach in the restroom this morning. The staff is amazing. Truly kind and super accommodating and professional. They were the best part of this establishment. However, I will never return, and although I’m a Hilton honors member, I do not plan to book any more stays at Double Tree Hotels. While heading downtown yesterday, we actually passed a Real Double Tree hotel that was actually located downtown checked the price and it was exactly the same… Truly Disappointed!

Great hotel for the price. Not the fanciest rooms, but they are functional and VERY clean. I stayed for five days and was very happy with the stay.
I ate at the bar/​restaurant four times and every time the food was awesome.
Grilled rosemary and lemon chicken breast — 5 stars — very moist and flavorful
Grilled mahi mahi — very flavorul, but a bit too dry — four stars.
Buffalo chicken wings (once at the bar and once for room service) — 5 stars — smelled great and tasted even better!
There is also a 24 hour Denny’s in the same parking lot.
The hotel is located right across the highway from UT Stadium and the Frank Erwin Center. (within walking distance of each)
If you are going to the convention center or near 6^th street, it is about a $ 5-​$ 7 Über ride.
I would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone.

NOT downtown & not hungry pedestrian-​friendly. Ingress & egress gate locked from neighborhood side so all patrons must enter through highway frontage road.
Only accessible food outside loop is a Denny’s and hotel restaurant food closes before 11 even on weekend. Staff thought restaurants across Hwy 35 were still serving, but they weren’t. Offered drink ticket compensation but for restaurants & only bar open after I recovered from my exhausting trek from the actual downtown Doubletree where I was led to believe I was staying.
Otherwise, pretty much what you’d expect from Doubletree.
Hope to check out the amenities after rectifying the hunger situation. Manager on duty approved late checkout & put me in HHonors room even though my account couldn’t be located. He did his best I’m sure, but I’m still hangry as after my dry run for food, too late for delivery. Guess I should have gone to Denny’s (24 hours).

I am revising my review and adding a star due to the exceptional service at the breakfast buffet. 3^rd time here since June and they always bend over backwards to serve their customers.
Nice hotel. Good proximity to UT. Cemetery view from quite a few rooms. Be warned– they have started charging $ 15 for parking.

Excellent service! We had thought our stay included free continental breakfast but we realized later that it didn’t. However, they didn’t want to disappoint us so they gave us two free vouchers to their breakfast which is WAY better than most hotels I have been to. They are very accomodating, let us leave our luggage with them after a late check out and they even have amazing chocolate chip walnut cookies that are warm! ugh I love double tree.
Now the room itself is pretty average. Basic amenities but clean. The toliet was running excessively though and we got a handicap room so the shower area wasn’t closed off from the rest of the bathroom so the floor was always wet after we showered. the mirror placement, though, omg seriously hotels need to ask girls where to put outlets and mirrors before designing their rooms. The mirror placements made no sense and were very impractical. One mirror was directly behind the bathroom door so that when someone walked out, it would always hit the person using the mirror. The other mirror was80% blocked by a table. wtf. And there was an obvious lack of outlets. Other than that, no complaints and I would definitely stay at a double tree again.

Easy reservations, and an easy check-​in. The room was very nice and clean although there was no view, we were in room 212. There were plenty of pillows on the beds which were comfy. The view wasn’t a big deal, I’m just mentioning it because some may care. The television was very large at least 36″ diagonally and it would swivel about the base so I could view it from the desk.
The restaurant was pricey and the menu very limited. There was a VERY outdated menu in the room so don’t trust that one, the restaurant was aware of the old menus which begs the question ‘why are they still in the rooms?’ We ate dinner there but opted to eat breakfast at the Denny’s next door. To be fair, breakfast was served at the hotel be we wanted a different menu selection.
There was easy, reliable wifi in the room but no refrigerator or microwave. There was an in-​room coffee maker, 1 or 2 cup selectable and that came in handy.
We had purchased bottled water and snack items at a little pantry area beside the check-​in desk, the items were hotel vending machine priced but without the hassle, they were added to our room charge so no cash was required.
One final note on the TV reception, on several occasions the TV had lost its signal for a second or two, this I found odd because although it was unusually cold outside it was basically clear.

My stay here was nice. The lobby area has a bar and a restaurant open until 11. The hotel also shares a parking lot with Denny’s which is great for a quick breakfast in morning.
My hotel was very clean. The bed was rather comfortable as well.
I would recommend this hotel as it affordable and located close enough to downtown that you could take a $ 10 cab drive.

I give this hotel 4 stars. First, let’s start with the good. The hotel was very clean from lobby to my room. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Very convenient location to my business at UT Austin. I drove (quick 7 minute drive) but it seemed walk able (although maybe not safe to walk late at night). The gym was well maintained but small (about what I expect from hotel). I was able to get a fridge and microwave in my room upon request which was nice. The bed was very comfortable.
The bad — on my second or third day there the hot water went out in the AM. When I asked about this, I was told that yea the hot water goes out when too many guests check in at once (WTF). This almost makes me want to bump them down to 3 stars. I actually read about someone else not having hot water in a Unilocal review but figured it must be a one time thing — it’s not. I also didn’t like the smell of the cleaning solution they used in the lobby — reminded me of vomit but at least it was clean!
tl;dr — Good affordable and comfortable hotel. Might have hot water go out.

The staff is very helpful and the rooms appear to be recently remodeled. A Denny’s is located next door and its located across the highway from downtown. Its also located directly off the access road.

This is a convenient hotel for Austin guests looking to save money by being across the highway from the downtown area — here’s why:
1 — Easy to find off I-​35
2 — Looking for a breakfast to nurse your hangover or start your return trip home? Denny’s shares a parking lot with the hotel.
3 — On a good night: Cab Fare is about $ 10 to Rainey and east 6^th streets
4 — measly bar
5 — Bedding isn’t the best — my base sheet came off in the night so I was touching the mattress… ew
6 — Walkable to the UT stadium for football, not walkable to much else due to the highway

Stayed here in late April, rooms are very spacious with a big bathroom. Had a king bed with many, many pillows. I was actually placed on the Hilton Honors floor so my room had two bottles of water by the coffee maker. Very comfortable stay and friendly staff. Warm, fresh cookie upon check-​in. However, as others mention, it is located right next to a cemetery, and I can see why it would bother some people. We went to check out the outdoor pool, and it turns out it is actually directly facing the cemetery. I did find that to be a strange view for guests enjoying the pool.

Let me set the stage… this is not the best hotel in Austin! However, here are the ups. Easy access. Always clean. Free parking in a safe place. Owners keep upgrading the hotel… every time I am there, it is better than the last. Staff is consistent, professional and courteous. Pool is quaint and private feeling. Rooms are comfortable. Beds are dreamy. Showers spacious. Air conditioning in room is coooooollllllllllddddddd. You can usually get a room for about 50 to 75% of what it costs one block over.
The not so good? Its not right downtown. The bar is a little small. The view out the back side of the hotel is a cemetery.

My room at the Doubletree Club Austin was comfortable and clean, typical of a Doubletree Hotel. No complaints there. The folks who work in the hotel are also pretty nice.
The Internet access was unreliable here, which was unfortunate because I had to lead a web meeting for work from my room. I lost connection midway through and had to frantically work to reconnect. Fortunately, I had realized prior to the meeting that the Internet connection wasn’t the world’s finest and had hard copy materials that I could use to continue the meeting, but I would say that this Doubletree may not be a good choice if you’ll need to work from the room.
The location was not great. To get downtown on foot requires walking about a half mile down an access road and under an overpass. I later learned from a local that this route brings you near several homeless shelters, and is not considered particularly safe. The hotel also abuts a cemetery, which is quiet but an eyesore. The only really convenient restaurant is the Denny’s next door, although Austin Daily Lunch was a 15 minute walk away.
If you have a car to get yourself to other parts of town, then the Doubletree is fine. If you’re on foot, consider actually getting a room downtown for safety and convenience.

I was in town for a wedding and stayed here for a night. The self parking outside is a pleasant surprise, as I am tired of mandatory valet where they get you for $ 30 a day.
Inside the hotel was clean, and the people at the front desk got us checked in quickly. The room was clean, and modern. It looked like it had been updated recently. The showers are somewhat weird for a hotel. They are square and have sliding doors. On the upside, they have great water pressure and the water gets nice and hot. I tried to make a cup of coffee, but my coffee maker just belched steam and did not end up working.
At one point I called the front desk and asked them to call me a cab. They declined and told me to download a cab calling app. I was a little stunned, as this was the first time I have not been called a cab by a hotel. I know I could call one, but I thought hotels usually had a go-​to cab company. Plus at $ 240 per night if I want one phone call I feel like they should be accommodating.
This is a clean, modern hotel. If I am in Austin again and the price is right, I will stay here again.

I booked a room here for a recent work trip to Austin. My company is extremely strict about security, so there weren’t a ton of approved options. Well, there is the W hotel for half a grand per night… but sadly, I can’t justify that.
I picked the DoubleTree for its proximity to the UT campus. It took under 3 minutes to drive there, which helped because I was running late for a meeting. It’s hard to hustle in heels. There’s also plenty of parking in the lot. I’ll be honest, another main reason is the free cookie. A warm, freshly baked walnut chocolate chip cookie was handed to me at check-​in. How could I resist?
I was not aware that it is located right next to a cemetery (this cleared the security check?), but I’m really not concerned with that stuff. I was, however, bothered by the loud sounds coming from I-​35 all night. It’s hard enough for me to fall asleep, so I’d definitely request a room on the cemetery side next time. Since they provided FIVE pillows, I built myself a pillow fort to block out the noise. The king sized bed was very comfy; I felt like I was sleeping on cloud 9.
Why is the bathroom was so dimly lit? I’d like to be able to see myself in the mirror before heading out in the morning. The room looked clean enough, but I wouldn’t know, it was so dark even with all the lights on. I found it rather strange that there’s no refridgerator, which I had thought to be a standard amenity. They have a few of them floating around though, so the front desk sent one up for me. The fitness center is open 24/​7, but it only has a few machines. The elevator is slow and needs an upgrade.
It’s what you expect from a DoubleTree. I’d stay here again for the convenient location, abundant parking, and free cookie… at least until I’m important enough to stay at the W. I hear they give you gummy bears there.

Stayed one night during the week when were in town to see a show at Frank Erwin Center. Travel was two adults and a 2-​year old.
POSITIVES
Convenient location: it was walking distance to the venue. We were slightly concerned about the busy traffic, especially with a toddler; but walking was fine. Took about 10 minutes. Being next to a Denny’s was nice too and made for convenient and budget friendly dining.
Clean & Comfortable: the room was clean which is always a big plus when sleeping away from home. There was some concern about our son getting restless, but there was enough open space in the room for him to «explore», climb beds and play with his toys. The beds were comfortable and we had a total of eight pillow on two queen size beds!
Friendly Staff: not much to say here but we did feel welcome.
Budget Friendly: price was right, especially for the convenience of the location and free parking.
NEGATIVES
Pool: dirty. Our stay was in early April and temperatures were low 80s but we were still hoping to take a splash and tire the boy out. We haven’t been swimming yet this year so we were pretty excited about it. Unfortunately the pool was filthy. I spent about half hour trying to scoop out leaves but this pool need a thorough cleaning. Despite the leaves the water appeared clear but we decided against getting in. Glad we didn’t because at one point the filter must have kicked on and the jets expunged streams of dirt. The entire pool turned a gray-​brown color.
Noise: this was something I knew about before going but decided it might not be an issue. Since the hotel sits off of the highway, it was obvious that the traffic sounds were going to be noticeable. Our room faced the highway too which might have elevated this. I guess this is might only be an issue for light sleepers. My wife and son slept soundly through the night, however I was up multiple times.
CONCLUSION
Overall we were pleased with our visit but I don’t think we will repeat staying here. For me the noise was the biggest issue and perhaps a room facing the graveyard would be quiter. (Yes, graveyard) I was also majorly disappointed about the pool, but I guess that might not be an issue for most.

Traveling for business makes everything that much more worth it, doesn’t it? This DoubleTree is in a great location, across from the University and about 4 minutes from Downtown. I rolled in about 3:45 in the afternoon, the lobby was clean and check in was speedy. The elevators were a bit out of date, though, slow, noisy, and drab. They were doing some work in the elevator lobby of the 6^th floor, so it was an empty alcove that smelled a little like paint, but no big deal.
My room was very clean (and didn’t face the graveyard — score!). I admit, I crashed onto the bed for about an hour after I got myself situated. It was incredibly comfortable. The TV signal kept cutting out, but with free WiFi and Netflix, I didn’t care. This might bother someone else, though. The bathroom was nice with a stand-​up shower with top-​notch complimentary toiletries and a free razor and shaving cream if you ask.
Room service — hey, I’ve never had room service before — was right on time with a great pancake breakfast. The bacon could have been a bit more crispy, though. The fresh-​cut strawberries were a nice touch. And all I had to do was hang the order form to the door knob the night before.
I needed to get an updated copy of my bill, so I went to the front desk to get a copy and they were a bit slow, but I wasn’t in a hurry.
Maybe I’m just easier to please than most people. I’ve been on the other side of the desk, so maybe that puts me — and the staff — at an advantage.

Location next to Danny’s and graveyard and freeway. Very interesting combination.
Front desk service is friendly and the cookies are good as usual. Room is clean. Nothing to complain about.
Been going to this location twice because the price is good. But maybe I will go somewhere else next time because my companion for the travel seems to always have something to say about the graveyard right next to our hotel.

Ugh. My room smells icky. Musty.
Not much more to say… other than, rent a car and stay nearer downtown if this is the only option.

Decided to stay here during a recent trip to Austin.
When the group and I got here, we were told that there were no rooms ready so we had to wait around 20 minutes for a room to be cleaned. Thankfully, they offered complimentary cookies that were ballin. Room service was nice and staff was very friendly.
