FLOSS Dental – Austin 5th/Downtown

FLOSS Dental was GREAT! Knowledgeable staff, simple signup process, and excellent service!

Everyone is very nice and professional here. My cleaning went better than I expected yesterday. The sunglasses help with spray as well as the lights. Being offered water when you walk in is nice too. It is a bit expensive here but the once a year free whitening (as long as you keep up with your appointments) is a nice bonus for me!

At first this place struck me as a place only for the rich and beautiful, and usually these type of ‘skin-​deep’ places lack service and professionalism, but I was completely wrong.
I had two difficult wisdom teeth removed, and the recovery has been rough (not because of the dentists, but simply my body did like having it’s teeth pulled). I had concerns that the sockets were dry, or maybe infected, so I went back 2 extra times to have the check up on them. I received nothing but the best and most supportive care! They saw me the day I called in, and made sure I was comfortable through the recovery.

Check this place out. Very Professional and Very friendly” They also take payment plans! They have made my Day ’ They did Deep Deep cleaning for me, the Gentleman that did it was very professional and fast and gentle” Thank you floss… i will be back. Oh btw did i say the give complementary whitening «With each Appointment!

Great place, Dr Barclay is the best! I’ve always had an easy time scheduling appointments promptly, and getting things taken care of.

Being relatively new to the city, I asked a couple coworkers to give me the name of their dentist. When they both suggested Floss on 5^th, I figured, why not? The office was immaculate upon entering with a nice modern flair. The front desk people were prompt to give me my paperwork and even offered water. Dr Jacobsen was very thorough in her examination and went through every xray and picture that was taken of my teeth. She answered all of my questions and I felt very confident in her recommendations. The hygienist April was also great. She took her time during the cleaning and was very personable. I think the whole office is very well rounded and I will definitely refer coworkers and friends to this office.

Floss does dentistry the right way. From offering refreshments when you walk in, to giving you sunglasses so the dental lights don’t blind you, they offer a high-​end experience. Not to mention the free whitening. The staff is super friendly, especially the front desk people. The quality of dental service is above and beyond as well. They take United Health Care so it doesn’t cost any more than a regular dentist. Floss is the obvious choice for dentistry in Austin. Watch out for the extra services they try to sell you as they will be out of pocket. However, I appreciate them offering services that go above and beyond.

Friendly staff! Dr. Jacobsen is the best. I recommend her to all my coworkers and friends.

I’m increasing the rating for my review.
The establishment gave me a call and ask me for further details on what had happened. I mentioned the issue with the pushy sales and that there may be a member in the staff who is careless when they apply the florid treatment.
It was a good conversation and they said they will try to make it more amenable for us. They seem to make an effort at this place and I’m happy that they reached out to us, that shows commitment and time spent to meet customers needs. I’ll wait to see what happens …

When I first started to go there for my teeth cleaning, they started asking for all kinds of charges and procedures. I said no and I was strict with the front sales administrator who was extremely pushy. But they somehow took advantage of another family member who was a new patient and after charging the insurance for a checkup they also wanted another $ 125 for cleaning saying she needed a deep clean.
I also went there for the free whitening and the florid treatment (that part is charged) after that. They didn’t apply the florid treatment properly around the teeth, this is the second time is has happened.
Most of the hygienists and the doctor are prudent.

I just finished my Invisalign «active» treatment yesterday with Floss Dental, and am now passing into the «passive» stage of retainers.
I am tremendously pleased with the outcome of my treatment, but like most things in life, this is what you make of it. I followed the instructions of my treatment to a «T» and now have great results.
As for this Floss location, I really only have very positive things to say. My husband, son and I have all been receiving treatment here since September. Hubby has had a hard time with some dental issues, but his appointments here have all been on time, they’ve thoroughly explained procedures and costs to him, and are very flexible and workable. I think the thing I like the most is the willingness to listen to a patient and the «real world» approach– I feel more like this is a partnership in my dental treatment rather than an «I’m the doctor, you are the patient so sit down and shut up» that you can get sometimes with providers.
This office is extremely high tech, with lots of cool gadgets that make visits easier and more comfortable. I enjoyed seeing all the digital pictures of my teeth!
They will suggest FULL courses of treatment for you — so be prepared for that. They aren’t trying to «rook» you– the choice of what to do (like, whether to get a mouthguard) is yours. They will tell you what is essential and what is suggested.
Super convenient location downtown. If you work downtown you can be back and forth to a visit in an hour easily (depending on what you are having done, of course). If you are visiting downtown, there are lots of shops close by that you can visit as well. Go to Lush for some relaxation and lovely body care, then get your grocery shopping done at Whole Foods!

When I just was arriving to Austin I was looking for a dentist and my husband suggested this place. I couldn’t be more pleased! Everyone in this office is really friendly and helpful, the dentist is a sweetheart, and so is the people who help her.
When I first came here, I need it teeth cleaning, and a mouth guard, and they were really patient with me, answering every single of my questions.
Besides, they could handle me while they were removing my wisdom tooth (I get really nervous with the dentist, nothing personal). They also make you feel like they care for you which at least for me is really important and makes me feel like I really want to keep coming back! I can’t wait for the next appointment!

I came in after two other disappointing experiences at other dentists. I wanted my 2 front teeth fixed, cleaning, exam etc. I called and was very clear about this. They told me no problem, I got scheduled and it was all completed in one sitting. Done and done.
Dr Kim Barclay was who I had and she was great. So I cannot testify to the other practioners there. She was funny, laid back, and educational regarding various options.

Worst experience in dealing with any business ever. Egressive sales tactics for services and deceptive billing practices.
Floss is a business more so than a dental practice. They are a business more so than a dental practice by the sense that they lure you in with something free and shiny, teeth whitening in this case. Once you are there they are more about getting the most amount of money out of every customer possible than doing necessary dental work. They use an awkward and aggressive menu approach to showing you services to select from and have multiple unnecessary levels of everything offered, even teeth cleaning. This just means if you get the bottom level your teeth are left dirtier for the sake of you not socking over more money or if you get the top tier you are just paying more for the same service… Food for thought. The experience is not dissimilar to purchasing a car or cable television; it’s just more awkward because you are at a dentist.
I went to Floss for a chipped veneer and was told that insurance wouldn’t cover it because it was cosmetic, and I was given my menu of prices of the work to be done. (Teeth whitening had a $ 0.00 beside it!) I immediately called my wife to get the go ahead. She called the front desk directly after hanging up with me and requested that they run it through insurance because she had just hung up with them (insurance) and they said it was certainly covered because it was a repair on an existing veneer.
After removing the old veneer and replacing it with a temp, I was told to go to the front desk to pay and to make the appointment for my «free» whitening.
Pay? What about the whole insurance covering it thing? Even though we were now going to use insurance, they would not let me leave until I paid and told me I could wait in the waiting room until I spoke with my wife again. This was extremely odd.
They not only charged our credit card for the full amount of the veneer after requesting they bill insurance; they also ignored many requests to bill insurance thereafter (according to the insurance company they hadn’t tried at this point). After a few weeks and several phone calls, they billed insurance but refused to give us back the full amount paid.
They refuse to give us the additional $ 350 owed to us because the actual cost of the veneer was only a little over $ 600 and the price of the whitening was absorbed into the cost of the other work as shown on the price menu they gave me! The «free» whitening was not «free» and they couldn’t bill insurance for that portion! This is why they wouldn’t let me leave until I paid!
We are now retroactively being forced to pay for the «free» teeth whiting because of deceptive billing practices on behalf of Floss. Mind you that at the point of payment, my teeth whitening appointment was 2 days later. So technically I was not only being held to pay for a free service that hadn’t been rendered but also not allowed to leave because I was being held accountable for payment of services insurance was covering.
I got my teeth whitened on the grounds that it was «free.» When we requested to use insurance they knew that they couldn’t collect the additional money for the «free» whitening after including it in the price of the veneer. They went ahead and did what was more profitable for them and kept us in the dark.

This is a fraudulent billing practice. We requested to bill insurance before any work was ever done and numerous times after work was done before any action was taken by Floss. I was told by the dentist to use my «free» whitening after the request was made, and now they refuse to refund me $ 350 due to the fact that teeth whiting is not actually «free». The only reason our request to bill insurance was ignored in the first place was because they are able to collect more money by billing the patient directly.
This wasn’t a mistake; this was tactic to collect more money. You should not have to deal with aggressive sales tactics for unnecessary services and fraudulent billing practices at a dentist. I have never encountered this type of treatment from any establishment and will do my best to shy everyone away from this shady practice.

To start off this Floss is located downtown right next to Wholefoods! They have their own parking lot so, no need to fight for parking… The staff is fairly young and they seem to enjoy the profession they are in. They have very advance technology since the last time I’ve been to the dentist (10 years and there was no judgement at all).
I have a weak gag reflex with the FMX, but the assistant work as fast as they could to knock that out of the way. In reality these things are not pleasant but with the right people it is bearable. Once you are finished with the «photo shoot» the doctor will come in and put everything on the t. v for you and explain everything in detailed.
The cool thing about Floss is that they give you free teeth whitening as long as you keep up with your 6 month cleaning. Professional whitening programs can charge up to $ 300.
Realistically, Floss might not be for everyone. But I think I found a new family.

best dental experience in a long time! I too am shocked with the bad reviews on here… but gosh, most of them are old — from personal experience, I can tell you they are awesome!

the atmosphere was great — *BEST* music playing in a dentist office! tons of parking in the attached garage. and, the individual TV’s are a nice touch.
I’ve been there for a teeth cleaning and teeth whitening in the past 30 days and both experiences were great! definitely referring these guys to my peeps!

I was highly irritated that I spent the time to enter all of my personal and medical history information through the FLOSS online system, just to arrive to the office and learn that, «oops, I didn’t have time to copy your info over, so here, you do it.» Very unprofessional front desk staff who seemed not to understand her role as the face of the company (and brand, in this instance). I was also asked to sign forms agreeing that I had been told of certain warnings and risks by the dentist about their free teeth whitening service, even though I had not yet met the dentist and certainly had not received any explanations of the treatment. When I stated that I would not sign the form until after I could truthfully do so, that was ok with the receptionist, but then I was never told anything else later by the dentist about that part of the treatment and instead they just skipped that treatment.
The dental staff was pretty awesome though, even though they kept turning on ESPN after I kept turning it off.

I feel completely taken advantage of after going to Floss to have routine cleaning. First off, I chose Floss because they would take my dental insurance and were close to my office and I was having a hard time find any dental practices that would accept my insurance, etc. even after looking at the bad reviews I still booked an appt. so I could get my simple cleaning done and be on my way.
Well, that is not at all what happened when I went for my visit. They did every kind of x-​ray, scan, test, whatever, under the sun, then proceeded to tell me I needed a «deep cleaning» and that this would cost more than a «regular cleaning». Since i had missed a cleaning the prior year I agreed to go ahead and and pay the extra amount to have them deep cleaned.
They recommended I have the deep cleanings done in two visits since it would take so long and I agreed to come back. By the time the actually dentist came and examined me, they front desk clerk had been by my room 3 times with a clip board showing me all the charges and what they recommended for me. At this point I was getting a little ticked off and feeling like I was being scammed, but because i am a person who likes to give the benefit of the doubt, I kept my mouth shut and let the dentist examine me.
The final straw for me was when he told me that I had 7 cavities and needed braces! Seriously? I have been told by every dentist that I have been to that I have a perfect bite and that my teeth look like they’ve had braces because they are so straight.
At his point I realized that I had been duped and wanted to get the heck out of there. At check out I was told that I had met my $ 1500 deductible and that I owed out of pocket $ 111.00 for the cleaning. I questioned the charges and none of it made sense to me, so because i am too nice and non– confrontational I payed what I owed and got out of there.
This visit took place over 6 months ago, and I am only now writing this review because I received a bill in the mail 2 weeks ago for another $ 198. Let me remind you, I only had my bottom teeth cleaned and have already paid $ 111 and had my deductible met for the year. I called Floss and was given some BS reasoning for the bill and told they would look over it and call me back. They never called me back. To ensure that I didn’t get put into collections I called them once again and was told they were appealing it with the insurance co.
Long story short. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS!

FLOSS Dental is probably the most dishonest dental practice I have ever been to and I’ve been to many. I had to switch dentists due to new dental insurance and since FLOSS was close to my work, I thought it was a no brainer.
The staff was pleasant enough, until it came time to meet the doctor. He came in, shook my hand and promptly informed me that I had multiple cavities that need to be fixed immediately. He then excused himself and his assistant gave me a printed bill for several hundred dollars of work. This was a shock to me since the dentist I had been going to for years told me I had beautiful teeth just 6 months before that.
I even went as far as to schedule an appointment for the work before I just had a terrible feeling I was being duped and canceled. I couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being dishonest, so I requested my x-​rays and went to a new doctor. He told me I HAD NO CAVITIES just like my doctor before that.
Bottom line: these guys will rob you blind if you are not careful, I would not recommend this practice. In fact, they should be reported to the professional licensing board — its malpractice what they are doing.

After moving away from my beloved South Austin, I decided to find a dentist closer to work. Days of surfing my dental insurance’s directory and comparing reviews on Unilocal to in-​network providers, I decided on fancy, modern Floss.
Good call, it turns out. The dentist, assistant and everyone else I encountered were lovely. Dr. Fossum discovered a very small cavity in a molar that needed a filling before it became worse. I dreaded having to make another appointment and take off work again, but the team at Floss managed to fit me in immediately – I’m talking five minutes later! I was in and out of the office in under an hour. AWESOME!
They also offer free whitening for life, which means one whitening treatment per year as long as you keep up with checkups and cleanings every six months. The only downside is that I was pressured frequently to buy special toothpaste (and toothbrushes.) I will never in my life spend $ 10 on toothpaste that doesn’t save puppies or make my teeth do magic tricks, so I wasn’t very keen on the solicitation.
Overall, great choice.
