Hyde Park Surgery Center

I had a surgery done here. With the exception of them allowing a woman in the waiting room to hold a business meeting via phone, all went well. It is, however, impossible to get a human on the phone whenever I called.

I was delighted with the service I received at Hyde Park. Check in was fast and efficient. All of the nurses I dealt with were kind, thoughtful, and had an excellent bedside manner. Once you are prepped, they bring you a blanket from the blanket warmer and offer you another if needed. Everyone was very sensitive post-​op in regard to my pain and desire to change before inviting my ride back to the room. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

I had bunion surgery and it went well. Everyone was nice and the facility was clean. The billing on the other hand leaves something to be desired. I know healthcare can have large outstanding AR, but they make you pay up front, in full, with insurance. Then they don’t submit your claim that you have already paid for in full until close to 3 weeks after your service and then it takes 60 days for them to receive payment from insurance. So if you overpay or meet your deductible in those almost 90 days you have to wait for reimbursement. I wonder if it’s illegal to over collect on healthcare and hold funds for so long.

The center is fine for outpatient surgery. My complaint as someone accompanying a patient is that they offer wifi (plus) but then block most of the sites you’d want to be on the pass the time while you wait. What’s the point? They’re obviously doing this to keep their employees off Facebook (as if they just access it on their smart phones), but do they realize it annoys the patients/​guests? It does.

As a retired surgical nurse with decades of experience, this primarily orthopedic ambulatory surgery center is one of THE best in Austin and the surrounding burbs. I can vouch for filthy surgical suites in other centers. You could eat off the floor in any area of HPSC — pre-​op, OR, and PACU. Please disregard one of the earlier posts. Some patients have hard to hit veins. It is not as if the RN is trying to stick you more than once. Veins happen! The staff is exceptional from the minute you enter the center. It is so apparent the staff are more like family. They care about you not only as their patient but treat you like you are one of their own. Concern, privacy, explanations, follow up phone calls are all in order at this surgery center. The OR crew is exceptional — ALL of them! Why would you go anywhere else, if you had to have surgery, other than Hyde Park Surgery Center?

I had surgery here in January… here is why I would not use this surgery center again, nor recommend it to anyone:
1– The nurses don’t listen to you at all, they have a procedure, and don’t care about your input (even if you’ve had multiple surgeries before, like me, and know what your talking about). They would rather sick to the procedure rigidly and treat every patient exactly the same. Their procedure is to start an IV in your hand, even if you have very small veins in your hand and request that they start it elsewhere. After missing, they still push fluid, this means you have a blown blood vessel and an even bigger and more bruised hand. (This was great since I was having surgery on my other hand, so both were out of commission for about a week)
2– Their nurses need ALOT more IV training, they missed twice, gave up, and had the anesthesia MD put my third IV in. Also, they tried my second IV without wearing gloves, a BIG NO NO. They also left the needle and all the gauze etc on the bed when they left to get the doctor, I nearly stabbed myself with in since I didn’t see it there in the sheets.
3– The administrator of the facility is just as bad if not worse than anyone else there, she definitely will NOT listen to your concerns and does not care about patient’s rights.
4– The doctors associated with this facility (and who make money off it) say they know there is a problem with the nurses, and yet, they obviously haven’t done anything about it.
So…until they TRAIN their nurses and treat patients like INDIVIDUALS… I won’t be seen there again. Healthcare has really gone down the drain, and this facility is just another example of that.

If you ever find yourself having to undergo surgery that is not necessarily super urgent, this is as good as it gets in Austin. And by urgency, I mean, perhaps, the surgery is suggested but not entirely necessary. I broke my foot, and for a while just thought it was a sprain. Four doctors said I can see how it heals with time, or guarantee it heals correctly by undergoing surgery. Being my first surgery ever, I needed to be certain of the doctor and the facilities. So, why, you ask, would I recommend Hyde Park Surgery Center? …
1] Cleanliness — yes, this is expected of most medical facilities but this place is so super immaculate, your surgeon’s Jewish mom would approve. Everything is spotless, and when I say spotless I mean you can’t even sneeze in this place without some OSHA sponsored hazardous waste expert appearing like a genie. Okay, maybe an exaggeration, but this place is spotless.
2] Service — Everyone there is super helpful. That says a lot for the medical industry these days, because if you scheduled surgery, it’s not exactly like you can walk out of the place because they forget to get your appetizer. You are there at their mercy, and with hefty rescheduling fees, it’s nice to know they are helping you because they WANT to, and not because they HAVE to.
3] Cost — Given our whole nationwide healthcare fiasco, this is a good way to lower costs. Having surgery here has a significantly lower cost than doing the same procedure in some mismanaged public hospital. Insurance aside, it’s always nice to know places like this exist!
4] Location — Hey, it’s Austin, and Austin is sprawling. Given their central location, this center is smack in the middle of everything.
So, my friend, I really never hope to see you here. But if you must undergo surgery down the road, I highly recommend this place!
