Ikes Transmissions and Auto Repair

I never had any experience with this company

My regular mechanic, M.E. Gene Johnson, recommended Ike’s when I had some transmission trouble.
I was leaking transmission fluid from a mysterious fist sized chunk of sealant in a place where there should be no sealant.
Taffy walked me through the issue and even showed me the problem.
There was no way to know what was under the sealant. Could have been a cracked case (the car would not be worth fixing) or a leaking gasket (totally worth fixing).
We worked out a plan I could live with (x dollars to pull transmission and diagnose. If it’s a cracked case, call the wrecker, otherwise fix it for x dollars more).
Turns out the previous transmission shop who had rebuilt the transmission left out a 50 cent gasket (hint, B & M Transmissions at 183 and Anderson Mill). Rather than fix it, they had covered over everything with sealant on the outside. This was guaranteed to start leaking at some point. In this case, it started leaking about 2 months after the warranty ran out.
Taffy and the guys at Ike’s walked me through the problem, answered all my crazy questions, and fixed it right.
Definitely my go to shop for Transmission troubles.

I had a manual transmission and clutch installed into my Ion Redline a few years back. Before they did the service, the shop tech called me to ask if I wanted the main seal replaced since the car was about 4 years old and it’d only be 50 dollars more for the part, to which I agreed, bringing the total to about $ 560. The job was finished in a timely manner and it drove fine, however within a week I noticed that there was oil leaking out where the transmission met the engine. I took it back to have them look at it, and after pulling the transmission out, they determined the main seal had gone bad and needed replacing. Since this would require pulling everything back out again (it’s under the clutch), the cost would be ANOTHER $ 500. Unfortunately, since it was never put in writing (was a verbal agreement over the phone) I had no leverage to demand they service it for free, but I talked the manager down to 50% off because he sympathized with my situation. Even so, I shouldn’t have had to pay anything given they didn’t do the service I requested.
To make matters worse, after telling a friend of my experience, he got his clutch changed at a competitor for about $ 360 and had no issues at all.
Don’t go here for transmission work.

I took my Nissan Armada to Ike’s because it was missing really, really bad. I found out just before I called him I had driven 80 miles on no transmission fluid. I grinded my gears pretty good. A solenoid had began to malfunction and frozen up. After taking it to Ike’s my transmission now runs better than ever before. I highly recommend this guy!

Don’t just go by reviews of people who just got their car back, go for the long term results. I had the transmission in my wife’s Taurus Wagon done in 2012. I thought they had done a good job of this other shop that has several stores in the Austin Area. Just before the unit went off warranty we had trouble with it. This other shop took the car back in and told me they would go through it. We had several more visits and they just kept patching it.
To make a long story short, I heard about Ike’s and brought the car there just before Christmas. I wanted to keep the car so I asked them to check it out. they told me they would need to pull the unit and tear it down. When they did, I came in and went over the unit with their builder. The other shop we had gone to had done a really second rate build. There were a LOT of components and things like solenoids and electrical harnesses that should have been changed out that were never touched.
I had Ike’s do the build the right way and yes, it was expensive, but it was to fix all of the things that a good builder would have fixed the first time. To define expensive, it was about $ 700.00 more than the poorly done build.
Ike and Taffy and the builder (who is Ike’s son) and the rest of their crew are a class act. They do and do it right. You can tell a lot about a shop by how open they are and these guys have nothing to hide. Having owned three shops in the Boston Area I can say first hand that I will not take any of my collector cars or driver vehicles anywhere else.
Quality isn’t cheap but it is the quality job that you only have to do once where the cheap price takes several tries a lot of the time. We got the car back and it has run flawlessly since we got it.
Do it once, do it right, go to Ike’s.

Ike, Taffy and the rest of the crew repaired and made safe the 1 owner 1965 Corvair with 65,000 miles! Old stock/​new parts were located and used to keep the car factory. This car had been in storage for over a decade. Thanks guys!!! I recommend them.

I am a 21 year old girl who is broke and owns a 94 Mazda manual truck. His name is Noël and I love him dearly. One day he started acting up, and I became fear stricken. I hate to say, but when I think of mechanics, I think of hundreds of dollars and a couple days without a vehicle. This was not the case with Ike’s transmission. From the moment I took a step in their garage, I was greeted politely and assisted. I gave them a description of what was happening and from there they took over. They even offered to give me a ride home, which was really sweet.
After a couple hours of expecting the worst, I got a call from Ike’s. I originally only asked for a diagnosis, thinking that with my luck I was going to need a whole new engine in which case I would have to give up Noël. After talking to the guy, they fixed the problem and Noël was ready to hit the road again. All for a grand total of $ 30. That’s right. The problem was really simple, but these guy’s found it quickly and fixed it for cheap. I am so grateful. Before leaving, the mechanic even explained to me (in very simplistic terms) what was wrong and how he fixed it. That is great customer service. I will be back here for sure with some cookies or something :)

Now that our cars (Hyundai & Toyota) are a little older, we needed a mechanic, and Ike’s has been great. Nice guys. Reasonable rates.

Made an appt for 10am and when we arrived, they were ready for us. The service was prompt and courteous. I highly recommend these guys and I will be back. I feel we are in good hands.

Honest and passionate about getting folks back in their vehicle are just a few words to describe these guys. In my experience, its rare in the automotive repair industry to see these qualities. I strongly recommend Ike’s and will go out of my way to make sure everyone in my network is aware of this outfit.

Worked with the owner to diagnose the problem. They were able to figure out the problem in 20 minutes what the other shop could not do after having for a full day. Easy to work with and very reasonable pricing. I highly recommend!

Took an old car in to have the transmission serviced. I knew what the problem was (front pump on a 700-​R4) and that the transmission was old. I told them I just wanted the front pump changed. On the phone they quoted a couple of hundred bucks, and said towing was free, so I sent in the whole car. Couple of days later they had completely disassembled the transmission and given me an estimate for $ 2K. 10X the original ballpark! I told them no way, so then they wouldn’t even put it back together. Then I had to pay $ 500 for a «diagnostic» fee and the supposedly free tow, then had to pay another tow truck to get the car home with a box of transmission parts in the trunk. Real crooks!

i discovered Ike’s several years ago and have been very pleased with the good, honest service we get every time we replace or repair a transmission with Ike.
I own a small business with a fleet of used vehicles. Needless to say i buy engines and transmissions every so often (it beats a monthly payment for a new vehicle.) With ike you get an honest estimate, a timely performed repair and a company that stands behind their warranty!
He is local and more concerned with keeping you as a client and not just adding you to his monthly sales totals like many of the national transmission companies.

I have been a loyal customer of Ike’s Transmissions for 2 years now and I don’t plan on going anywhere else.
My experience with the team here is that these guys will make you feel welcome and being a woman you know how it is when you go to some shops. They diagnose and fix the problem the first time, They give suggestions and honest opinion on what needs to get done, they don’t overcharge and if you are interested they actually educate you on what is being done to your car and why it has to be done.

My truck broke down as I was headed to work for start of 2^nd week at my new job (was driving in from Dallas… so new to the city of Austin). Was unsure what to do, where to go, etc. Ike the owner was driving by, saw me stranded, and stopped to inquire if I was OK.
He saw my drive shaft had fallen off (u-​joing froze up), gave me his quick estimate of options and rough costs of each, to help me understand my situation better. That same day, I was back on the road, with a repair and pricing I felt was fair and honest, and I was very relieved and pleased. He also drove me to my work and picked me up again while the work was being performed (vs me having to get a rental car).
What started out as a very uncertain and anxious morning turned out to be just fine. I am thankful to Ike for stopping to help, and knowing exactly what was wrong, cared about my situation, was able to give me a quick feel for costs and options, and got me back on the road very quickly. I will definitely keep their company on my A-​list of places to contact in the future for related work.
That sort of service and caring is what makes an excellent company!

Several years ago I took a 12 year old toyota for some transmission work.
They did they job, charged a fair price and I was truckin’ down the road.
They are now a FULL SERVICE SHOP!!! YIPPPEEE!
When I arrived Ike greeted me with a smile, a handshake and took me to Joe to explain what I needed. I was informed of the progress, called to explain what they found and given a price.
My car is a 13 yr old Maxima and runs like it just came off a showroom floor!

I went to Ike’s because a buddy said that they were really honest: he expected an expensive repair and Ike told him he didn’t need it, and fixed his problem on the cheap.
I thought my tranny was going out on my 05 Durango and went to Ike’s, because I was having an intermittent problem with it slipping. They dropped the pan, replaced the filter and fluid and kept it a few days, but could not get it to happen again. They wouldn’t charge me, even for the work they did, because they had not fixed the problem.
When it happened again, I took it right to them without turning the truck off, and they were able to get a code reader on it and diagnose the problem as some sort of electronic unit that was controlling the tranny rather than the tranny itself. It was a fixed in a couple of hours for $ 130 for everything, which is great, because I was expecting to pay several thousand dollars for a tranny rebuild.
They do general mechanic work as well, not just transmissions and are in my hood, so I think I am going to start going there for all my repairs.
Friendly, honest and reasonable. What’s not to like? I like Ike’s.

Per Commissure’s request I shall write this review.
So the guys got stuck out in Austin Texas while they were on their south west tour. They were having transmission problems and couldn’t get their van to reverse. I jumped on to Unilocal and looked up the closest transmission fixer upers near them. They tried a couple places and settled on Ike’s cus he looked legit. They had a good experience, they were given a ride to the closest mall so they could hang out while the van was being fixed. Ike made sure they stayed in doors and weren’t waiting out in the cold. The van was fixed a few hours later and brought the band back home all the way to San Francisco. Mad props to Ike the man for making it work!

Straight up, these guys are honest, professional, and easy to work with.
I was calling around town to get my transmission replaced; the other guys were ready to order a replacement and schedule my repair.
Ike spent a few minutes asking exactly what happened, then had me do a simple test while we were on the phone. He made arrangements to have the car towed to the shop, then confirmed that it wasn’t my transmission — and that the repair would be a lot less complicated (and less expensive).
The job was finished early, and came in just under their quote.
I hope you don’t ever need transmission repair, but if you do, this is a place you can trust.
