Larry Lewellyn, MD

First off judging from the sign in sheet at least 90% of the patients are medicaid patients. Waiting in the waiting room was like hanging out with the front page of Busted magazine. There was only one waiting area with no separation for children who were sick and children who are there for regular checkups. I found the staff quite rude (well mainly just the woman at the front desk) and the woman at the front desk demands payment of your copay prior to seeing your child, something I’d never experienced. Larry is weird and has a gruff mannerism about him, I don’t doubt his medical skills at the end of the day when it comes down to it he seems to know what’s important. Unfortunately he’s not very good at communicating with adults and tends to talk down to you. Additionally if you need to call the after hours line there is a $ 10 charge for this service, considering the majority of his patients can’t afford healthcare it seems odd to charge extra for in time of emergencies. The office itself is small, cramped and the 3 rooms that you actually get seen in are equally small and the lights are on a short motion timer so if you aren’t moving around the lights go off while you’re waiting for the doctor.
We ended up switching to ARC right across the street where there are waiting rooms for sick kids and a separate room for healthy kids, plenty of space and nice sized rooms, doctors who are equally good with both children and adults, and the staff doesn’t treat you like a criminal who’s going to steal their services and only requests payment AFTER services have been rendered.

My son has been seeing Dr. Lewellyn for 4 years now and we have been very happy with him. He always takes his time to answer our questions and make sure we fully understand what we need to do when our son is sick. It is very easy to get a same day appointment and the waits are not long. He is very good with the kids and I highly recommend him!

CHOOSE ANOTHER DOCTOR. Dr. Lewellyn will make you wait and will not respect the choices you make as a parent. His patronizing attitude and judgmental personality make him extremely difficult to like. Oh, and he doesn’t have separate well/​sick patient waiting rooms.
Expect to wait for 15 – 30 minutes if you don’t have an 8 am appointment. This doctor puts little thought into timing and the order in which he sees patients. While waiting in an exam room with my NEWBORN we overheard him say, «We’ll save room 2 for last.» This was already after we waited 20 minutes to be taken back. If you have kids, you know how unbearable it is to hear your inconsolable baby scream in public for an hour. (He was overtired). If not, imagine someone pouring scorching hot wax on your bikini line and plucking out each of your pubic hairs one by one.
I only want the best for my child and have valid reasons for not vaccinating him. I should have walked out when he told me «not vaccinating your baby is child abuse.» He then launched into a 10 minute lecture, pretended I had no idea what I was talking about, and tried to make me believe I was a bad parent. Vaccine issue aside, I believe doctors should respect the decisions you make for the well-​being of your family. He was beyond rude and offensive. Furthermore, his parenting advice is archaic. For a doctor who treats children, I would expect him to stay up-​to-​date on research related to kids. If you believe medical doctors are gods and everything they say should be written in the Bible, you’ll probably like Dr. Lewellyn just fine. Don’t ever disagree with him or he’ll make you feel like you are four years old. If I could rate this guy with negative stars, I would.

Interesting to note that many people to seem to dislike Dr. Lewellyn can’t afford to go elsewhere. This was my experience as well. Seems like a pattern. My youngest daughter who is very social, dislikes him immensely. When she cries about shots or complains about anything we get a speech about her being more cooperative. My oldest ran into a snag with him when he was insensitive about the onset of puberty.
She is now insisting on seeing a female doctor and I don’t blame her. Also they charged us for shot records. 5 dollars. Seems like bs to me since our pediatrician in L.A. never ever did so. We are going elsewhere since we changed our insurance.

My mom took me to this doctor from a baby to five years old. She only stopped because we moved. I can remember any trip to the doctors office, dentist, etc., being a little scary but Dr. Lewellyn always made me laugh. He was kind and very concerned about my well-​being. My mom said he yelled at her because he didn’t think she was keeping a good eye on me when I fell down in the back yard and got a bruise. She didn’t get upset, she appreciated that he cared that much. I don’t know how he is now, since I was a kid in the 90’s, but I have to say I remember my visits fondly!

My husband and I could not AGREE with you more Amy A! We took our 2 year-​old daughter in for a check-​up and realized he was a little different at first, but tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. As the appointment went on, despite the fact that he was aggressive and rough, he was trying SO hard to CONVINCE us that our baby not having vaccinations was, and I quote «like walking around drunk on I-​35». He was trying to scare, intimidate, and make us feel guilty for not giving our baby, (who has always been very healthy), shots! What an unprofessional jerk! It’s one thing to have your own strong views and opinions, but another to force them upon someone else! We have put in the time to do our own research regarding shots and apparently he hasn’t. He thinks it’s his job to push shots upon parents for many different reasons, but it’s our job as parents to protect our kids! Will NEVER go back to «Dr.» Larry Lewellyn! Parents Beware!

It is with great saddness that a chapter in my children’s lives has ended. They are now too old to see Dr. Lew-​hoo as we call him. What a great relationship over nearly 20 years and a great and caring physician. I can not say enough good things about Dr. Lewellyn he took such excellent care of both of my kids and we will truly miss him. Down to earth and interested in what goes on with people including taking the educating role and being concerned about what goes on with kids, no just medically but emotionally too. We love you Dr. Lew.

I can’t say I disagree with the other reviewers that Dr. Lewellyn has a bit of a quirky personality. After a handful of appointments, he has really grown on me and his personality quirks have become quite endearing. He visited us and our little girl twice while we were still in the hospital. And we’ve been his his office twice since we have been home with her.
What I like the most about Dr. Lewellyn is how straightforward he is with information. I never feel judged or dumb when asking questions, which is very important for this first time Mom. It is easy to get overwhelmed with opinions and advice from friends and family (even the most well-​intentioned) and it is really nice to feel like I have a pediatrician on my side when I’m not sure what the right answer is.
We have taken to calling him the ‘Baby Whisperer’ because he has a way of getting our little one to calm down when she has to get undressed for her exam and she does NOT like being cold! I’ve been trying to recreate whatever little back rub he gives her to cheer her up at home and I have yet to succeed. His nurses are also as sweet as they come, and seem super excited to see our baby every time we are there.
He is VERY aware of all the little details. On our first appointment after going home from the hospital while examining our girl, I had to sit down because I was feeling light-​headed. He immediately directed his attention towards me and asked how I was feeling and how my recovery was going. I really appreciated that he took the time to make sure we were all doing well before we left the office. My OB recommended Dr. Lewellyn and said that the test of a good pediatrician is how they act in times of emergency, because there is nothing scarier than being a new parent with a sick baby. I have total confidence that we’d be well taken care of when that dreaded time comes.

I have been taking my kids to Dr. Lewellyn since they were infants, and I really appreciate his good mood with us at every visit — in other words, he’s never given any indication of «having a bad day» in terms of how he treats his patients.
He is kind and takes time to assess the kids at each visit, and listens to parents when they have questions or concerns.
The staff is also really friendly and upbeat and will treat you with respect.

When I first met Dr. Lewellyn, I wasn’t too sure what to make of him. He seemed a bit gruff and didn’t have the warmest bedside manner. I had chosen him on the advice of my ob/​gyn (go figure as a first time mom, I had no clue I was suppose to pick a pediatrician BEFORE I had the baby). As I went to each well baby visit and well child visit, I noticed Dr. Lewellyn took great care to look at every single item to make sure my firstborn was healthy. I still was unsure about Dr. Lewellyn until one dr. visit when my firstborn was very sick. I called up to ask for his advice and he had me bring my son in that day. My son was having a hard time breathing and looked physically ill. Dr. Lewellyn immediately got him on a breathing treatment and was just about to walk us over to South Austin Hospital b/​c of my son’s oxygen levels. He made absolutely sure that my son’s oxygen level was in the 90’s range before he let us leave the office and got us hooked up w/​a nebulizer and rx’s for the breathing treatments. Since that time, I knew even though Dr. Lewellyn has his odd mannerisms, he is a dr. first and a damn good one at that.

I mistakenly took my son to this EVIL man three times DR. LARRY LEWELLYN~ and only regretted it more each time… not only did he purposefully make my 8 month old cry EVERY SINGLE TIME he layed even a stethescope on him! But, he was bruttally unkind, sarcastic and overbearing. We came to be seen about a fever but he kept pushing on a leg bruise my son got while dad was taking him out of the high chair. causing more tears? same with the tounge depresser… my boy was gagging and screaming… clawing to get away. and this was NOt HIS FIRST EXAMINATION! He insisted on vaccinations even though we had been refusing since birth. He argued to me that BREASTFED BABIES NEVER PREFER TO BE TOUCHED BY ANYONE BUT THE MOTHER!!! please keep in mind i have a very social child very charming and secure in his attachments and this is the biggest lie I have ever heard a proffessional claim! this man was spiteful and rude and it was as if he had some point to proove! IF I could afford better insurance i would have switched sooner, but the company is giving me the run around… Good Parents beware of this monster in medicine!
