On my recent business trip to Austin, I decided to forgo my usual trip to Amy’s Ice Cream (which I think is somewhat overrated, but it brings back memories of my high school and college days), and decided to check out Lick Honest Ice Creams instead since it was near the hotel I was staying at. I didn’t read the reviews carefully though and it wasn’t until I was already in the store and looking at the flavor choices that I realized this was not your traditional ice cream as evidenced by the lady behind the counter asking «Are you vegan?» after I had asked her which flavors were the more popular ones.
I sampled the Hill Country Honey and Vanilla Bean and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie because those were the only two that appealed to me and I was a little disappointed in both. I thought about not ordering anything at all, but didn’t want to be one of those people who try a couple of samples and then don’t order anything so I went ahead and got a small with those two flavors.
It’s quite possible for gluten-​free ice cream this might be a great spot, but if you’re looking for a more traditional «ice cream fix» I would recommend going elsewhere.

I’ve always enjoyed Lick. Their ice cream is some of the best I’ve ever had, and I consider myself a connoisseur of good ice cream.
I’m not a fan of their vegan options, even though I regularly make vegan ice cream at home with similar ingredients. I guess their selections just don’t jive with my palate, which is fine. They have many other options, and will let you stand there trying them all until you find what you like. Some of my favorites include the beet-​mint ice cream and sweet cream.
The price is right, too. You’ll get two generous scoops in a small cup for less than $ 6, and it’s beyond satisfying. Considering that I’ve been known to ingest nearly three pints of Bluebell in a day, that’s saying something.

What a great little ice cream shop! We came here on a warm Sunday afternoon and were able to walk right in and start sampling without waiting in any kind of line. The lady behind the counter was really friendly and sweet and let us try as many flavors as we wanted. They have some really unique flavors, like Goat Cheese & Honey and Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint. They also have more classic flavors, like Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie. I got a small waffle cone, and with the small size you get two scoops, so I had the Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie flavor and (on the recommendation of the lady behind the counter) the Blondie flavor. Both were completely delicious. My boyfriend went a little crazy and got the large waffle cone, which allows you to get four scoops and I can’t even remember what flavors he got. All I know is that it was a huge range, and he loved all of them.
For the two cones we paid somewhere in the area of $ 12, which seems steep for ice cream, but it’s really good quality ice cream and it’s artisan, so I guess you pay for that. Definitely recommend visiting here if you’re in Austin, or at least picking up a pint of theirs at Whole Foods if you’re not.

I’m a bit of an ice cream snob, after being a sales rep for a gourmet ice cream company, and this place was good (I mean, how bad can ice cream be, really?) but it wasn’t great. The quality of the ice cream just wasn’t that great. It was more icy than creamy. They had some really unique flavors, which I’m sure the average ice cream consumer loves, but it was just an meh experience for me. If I lived locally I wouldn’t go back.

Just come here.
I’m not bowled over by ice cream, but this place is delicious and they have some funky flavors like beet and Texas Sheet Cake.

I’ve been to a place like this before in Houston Texas. The other place had really weird flavors like balsamic vinegar and chocolate. This place has kind of a similar theme. They do throw in a couple off the wall flavors you would not expect. For people that are less daring, they do have vanilla and hot chocolate. One I really wanted to try was goat milk and honey.
You can tell the people working like what they do. They are really friendly and patient with new people like myself. This place is kind of hidden but don’t miss it. Def worth it.

What is it with Texas and licking? J/​K. After reviewing Salt Lick. I figured I should review Lick Honest Ice Creams too. My friend would die if we didn’t make a stop here. so, for her sake, we did. Kinda glad we did. The place is cute, the staff was friendly, and the ice cream was true to its name. Its all pure flavors and nothing fake or imitation about it. The colors pop because of the ingredients, and not because of food coloring.
You’ll be sad if you don’t make a stop here.
And trust me… you’ll have a hard time deciding what flavors to choose. I stuck with a classic, everyday flavor (1^st time I became a boring person…) which was the caramel salt lick. But, I highly recommend trying the seasonal flavors and getting more than one flavor… you won’t regret it!

Organic and local ingredients churned into creative artisanal ice cream flavors.
I was drawn to the beautiful fuchsia tinge of the beet and lime flavor. As well as being the most beautiful ice cream in the case it was also the nicest, lightest and a great palate cleanser. After eating Texas BBQ galore it was nice to have some creamy ice cream be not too decadent. The beet and lime flavor hit all the right spots. It was sophisticated and satisfying as an ice cream.
I also had a scoop of the Texas sheet cake ice cream. This was a nice combo of cake and ice cream and satiated the more traditional ice cream flavor desires.
4 stars and not 5 because the ice cream wasn’t the creamiest recipe and it had a bit of iciness to it.

Okay… Very icey. No toppings. Few mixed in. Amy’s is far better or the Science. Hell I have better at home :\

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about this place? Awesome and unique flavors. Personally, I was hesitant to check this place out after seeing «roasted beets» and «cilantro lime» as flavors. That all changed when I actually came in to check it out. Staff is friendly and more than willing to help you decide on what flavor to choose from! They will let you try them all of you want/​need to.

This place is super tiny because they make all of their flavors in house so i guess big flavors need a big kitchen! The line is wrapped literally in every space that a human being could fit and the flavors range from as simple as coffee with cream to roasted beets & fresh mint, cilantro lime, or goat cheese, thyme, & honey! My friend and I tried two flavors each and were not satisfied with most of the stranger ones as they were really strong so we played it safe and went with caramel salt lick, coffee with cream, Hill country honey & vanilla bean, and Horchata. I really liked the texture of their ice cream and the horchata and coffee with cream were my favorites but all were delicious! The hill country & vanilla bean was pretty plain and I didn’t taste the honey at all. I would definitely return to try more flavors!

Super delicious ice cream, and lots of fun flavors. They only had one person working the day I went in so it took a pretty long time (longer than I’d normally wait for ice cream) but I’m glad I did. Was a bit small for what you paid, but good quality.

One of my favorite ice cream places in Austin. Whether or not it’s the ‘healthier choice,’ I at least pretend it is since the ingredients are local, fresh, etc. However, I will never go on a hot night or in the summer. The lines get too out of control, and as much as I like it, I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s worth an hour wait. The thing that sucks is that it always seems like the service is extremely slow, but it’s not. Instead, it’s customers who want to try every single flavor, and it ends up taking 20 minutes per customer. Despite my grievances, the rotating flavors and the usual flavors are always so good and unique, and it’s hard to stay away.

This is honestly my most favorite ice cream place in Austin. I always have to stop by here when I’m in town.
They have really simple-​looking flavors but it’s very flavorful to me! The lemon lavender, Hill country vanilla bean, and the Au Lait are my favorite! There’s probably more flavors I like but I don’t remember but those flavors.
I went here one time during the spring time and it was HOT plus the line was long and since the place is so little the line went from the counter to the the restrooms/​backdoor and curved to the front counter again lol it was terrible. But awesome ice cream. Ain’t nothing getting in my way from ice cream.

4 stars for unique and creative flavors, helpful staff and reasonable prices. We stopped by after lunch for a unique Austin ice cream experience, and that it was! I doubt I’d be able to find goat cheese, honey and thyme ice cream anywhere else! There was a long line, but the girl behind the counter was hustling all by herself and remaining incredibly calm considering she had to handle a crowd on her own. My ice cream was pretty yummy. Honestly, if I lived in Austin, I probably wouldn’t be a regular… but I might buy it in stores if the mood struck. I do wish they had the nutrition info on the labels of the containers they have for purchase, but I suppose as the continue to grow, they will eventually provide that.

WE got the 3 scoop waffle bowl to split 3 ways. The flavors are ALWAYS changing so you can never go wrong.
Sample a few, ask for recommendations then make the call. You WON“T be disappointed and if you are it is your own fault for not trying their unique concoctions. WE WILL BE BACK AND OFTEN!

Interesting flavors for sure but found most of them underwhelming. Loved the staff and how enthusiastic they were so the experience was a wonderful one. Got to try pretty much all the flavors I wanted and yet wasn’t really fan of any. I also didn’t really enjoy the consistency. Ended up w the chocolate olive oil and goat cheese and thyme in a cone and was satisfied enough so three stars it is.

Décor is simple and modern. Ice creams… *drool* yeah. They are good.
If you’re like us, you like crazy combos when it comes to your ice cream. We went straight for the surprisingly perfect combo of cardamom pear cake with brown butter. A mellow sweet mix of perfection. Chunky pieces like a frozen bread pudding of sorts.
If the permeating smell of baking waffle cones doesn’t get you, their crazy flavors will. Definitely coming back here.

And I thought Amy’s was it then I stumbled on this place: wow! This is darn good ice cream, especially if you like funky flavors and good ice cream.
Check the board for the pinned flavors for the evening: today I had the roasted beets and a scoop of the persimmons. Delicious.

This is such a cute ice cream store ! Each flavor is made from honest ingredients and the best part is that its the kind of ice cream that wont leave you with that «uhhghhh-​what-​have-​i-​done-​donut-​feel-​good» feeling.
Lick is the perfect pick me up to help you cool down especially on a hot day. I love the unique flavor combinations they have going on here and their waffle cones are AMAZING ! My favorite was the too hot chocolate which was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet… so fun to eat ! Of course everyone has their own palette so don’t hesitate to sample as many as you’d like before you make your own decisions.

Dang good iced cream! They’ve got some tasty lactose-​free options too.
They sometimes look busier than they are because people sit outside to eat, giving the appearance of a line out the door from Lamar.

Friendly customer service. Great tasty ice cream. You definitely have to try all of their flavors. Especially all the unusual ones. Don’t go for what you are so used to already like vanilla or chocolate. Probably the best ice cream I have had. Not overly sweet, smooth but not too creamy or icy texture.
It’d be a lot nicer if they improve the outdoor seating instead of just 3 lonely benches.
Also, I’d be a much happier customer if their scoops were bigger. Their scoop is about half the regular size you would get pretty much anywhere else.

This is some darn good ice cream guys. No joke. Don’t let the line deter you, you’ll be tasting your way through yummy, creamy goodness before you know it!
The parking lot (at least there is one!) is small, but there is some parking out in the back. The shop itself is also small, so the shop fills up quite quickly, and the line goes towards the back of the store. There are lots of interesting flavors so most of the hold up is at the front where customers are trying all the flavors. I would say if you’re at the back of the line, average wait would be about 15 – 20 min. It’ll take that long to read through all the flavors and their descriptions.
Texture of the ice cream is light, fluffy and creamy, and the flavors really stand out. I loved Horchata and the Hill country vanilla bean. Tip: Pick your ice cream flavor and make an ice cream float! So many combinations guys, the world is your oyster!

All my Unilocal friends check in here so I had to try this cute little place… Besides being super cute, their ice cream flavors are very unique & yummy!

Parking lot is small and tight.
Handmade ice cream. Fresh milk. I tried a few different flavors and enjoyed them.
Small — $ 3.69 — You get two scoops. I got Pecans & Cream and Coconut, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Swirl. Both were very creamy and tasted exactly like the name displays.
Low rating because the scoops literally the size of a golf ball. So pricey for the amount you get.

Honestly a delicious place for ice cream and to cool down! Expect a longgggg line when coming here during peak hour. Luckily, my party and I came here at a random time in the middle of the day so there was NO LINE! Whew. A must stop spot for ice cream when in Austin! You know the saying, «Stop and smell the roses.» Well, stop and eat some ice cream. Yeah, do that here.

— Just think floral hill country lavender meets sweet cinnamon and brown sugar crisp… Mmmmm

Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint
— Clean, crisp, local garden mint meets sweet earthy flavors of roasted beets.
— Who would have thought about making ice cream flavors out of beets??! I would have never thought of it, but Lick Ice Cream opened up my eyes and mind to a whole new world! Beets is an acquired taste, not liked by many. However, when eating the ice cream, there isn’t a strong taste of beets. You’re more memorized by the beautiful, vibrant color.

Is there anything that can’t be made into ice cream these days?
This past weekend in LA, I had exotic ice cream flavors like Peking Duck Buns, Bratwursts & Mustard (a Wurstküche collaboration), Green Corn Tamales, and Papi’s Korean Fluffernutter (a Roy Choi collaboration), which begs the question: is there anything that I won’t lick?
It’s going to be awhile until someone tops those (if ever), but I’ll give the prize for runner-​up for most interesting ice cream flavors I’ve had this year to Lick Honest in Austin, TX.
Lick Honest keeps it real and honest with local and fresh ingredients that are pure and free of artificial flavors and food coloring, and they feature some vegan flavors too. Their milk and cream comes from a local dairy and they practice the farm-​to-​table method, or in this case, cow-​to-​scoop process.
Before my visit, I researched by Googling «I Like Lick» for their website (
) and let’s just say that my company’s IT Department wasn’t successful in blocking some of the NSFW content that came up, and leave the rest to your imagination.
These are some of their key flavors:
–Dark Chocolate w/​Olive Oil and Sea Salt: I’m not a fan of ordinary chocolate, so the sea salt really benefits this one
–Goat Cheese, Thyme & Honey: my fave
–Roasted Beets and Fresh Mint: I don’t recall seeing a Beets flavors anywhere else before
–Cilantro Lime: quite refreshing, I felt the lime was more subtle
–Coconut & Avocado Curd: this one really stood out, although I wouldn’t have minded if Avocado was paired w/​something other than coconut
Their ice cream reminds me of a bit of a mix between some SF & LA artisan scoop shops. Most of the scoops were on the softer side but some of it was icy as well, depending on the flavor.
Lick Honest is in a dainty shop in an otherwise unremarkable strip mall. It was a bit of a walk from «Hey… You Gonna Eat or What?» (where I had lunch) but there’s not much I won’t do for a good licking.
