Lucky Bakery

I stop by Lucky Bakery whenever I am nearby. My favorite item is the Coconut Cream Filled Bread which is outstanding. I don’t normally eat white bread but this is so good that I allow myself to splurge once in awhile. The chef totally understands the concept of simple ingredients done right; and combines white bread, sweetened cream, and toasted coconut to create a wonderful pastry.

Had a lot of the staples you find at any Asian bakery! What I had:
— Green Tea w/​Red Bean Mousse Cake: surprisingly tasty! I couldn’t really taste much of the green tea, but the cake was soft and a little spongy. The red bean mousse wasn’t overwhelming at all, which I liked, but still had that red bean flavor. (4 stars)
— Chicken Curry Bread — generally tasty, but could have used the a little more filling and frankly more flavor. It had a veeery mild taste of curry, and the filling was «wetter» than I like. Having tried it, I don’t feel a real need to get it again. (3.5 stars)
— BBQ Pork Bread — yuuuum! Have you ever had a Chinese pork bun? Basically that but with «regular» bread instead of rice flour bread (and a lot more air on the inside). Would like to have had a little more filling, but for $ 1.49, it was still a really good deal. (4 stars)

The coconut cocktail bread is just so delicious from here. It’s moist and you can def tell they used quality ingredients and bake it daily! The pineapple bread is also delicious and light. My 11month old and husband both love it! We’re def gonna become regulars!

Had my daughter’s 3^rd birthday cake done by Lucky and it was a hit! Came back to them after they moved locations to have 2 cakes made for baby shower and they did not disappoint!

They did a great job to do interior upgrade since last year and created more new breads and cakes.
If you want healthier bakery foods, please go to Lucky Bakery! The bakery from Whole Food and Central Market or other grocery stores are way too sweet, even sometimes they taste good. And they have too many ingredients because they need keep them shelf time longer. So I highly recommend Lucky Bakery store.

I like stopping by here for the egg custards whenever I’m in this area. It’s a nice location. The staff is always friendly. Their pastries are a bit more bread-​y but they aren’t stingy with the custard in their custard breads. :)

The taro bread is delicious! The bread is very fresh and has a pretty good selection. The people working there are always friendly.

Lucky Bakery store has excellent customer service, unlike the other Chinese bakery in town. I think the selection is pretty limited and it is best to come earlier than later to get the best selection.
It’s a good 4 stars in terms of price. The baked items are good and cheap. I usually get their coconut bun and sponge cake, but for a savory treat, I reach for the pork floss.
The fifth star is for service and if you are inclined, I describe it below.
What the bakery does well are Chinese style special occasion cakes and I decided, at the last minute, to order a birthday cake for my party. I called and they happily accommodated my rushed request. When we sliced into the cake, it was quite, um, stinky. I thought it was my fault, that perhaps I miscommunicated. I called in a white cake and somehow got a durian cake. Some poor friends braved the smell to take a bite. Let’s just say it was a memorable experience, one that we’ll talk about for awhile.
Well, the next day the bakery called to tell me they had mixed up the cakes and offered me another one. This was extremely nice (mom and pop Chinese establishments are not known for good customer service from my experience). When I got my actual cake the next day, it was good. The frosting is whipped cream and the cake is light and moist, just what I expected.
Note: My Vietnamese friends LOVED the durian cake, better than the white cake. If you like it, it’s a great cake. But, I don’t suggest that you order it if you have never had it. It is very DURIAN…

Excellent Chinese Bakery… one of the few Chinese Bakeries that still knows how to make a traditional Chinese Coconut Bun with the Coconut paste inside i.e. they call it Coconut Cocktail Bread… it’s Delicious… they also make some great tasting flaky Egg Tarts… also try their awesome Mango cake… everything seems to have just the right amount of sweetness!

It is very unlucky that Lucky Bakery has gone downhill. They used to be a lot better at the old location. I went to the new location today. The selection is abysmal. The buns look stale, wrapped in plastic bags, very unappetizing. A few pieces of cake near the front of the shop look old. The egg tart is dried.
One less place to shop for Hong Kong style bakery. Sad. So sad.

Lucky Bakery is the best Chinese bakery in Austin (out of the two I know of). The pastries are genuinely good despite having such little competition.
The types of things I get (taro bread, pineapple buns, peanut buns, red bean buns, etc…) cost around $ 1.49 which is roughly $ 0.25 to $ 0.49 more than comparable-​sized pastries in Houston Chinese bakeries. Unfortunately, Austin has a higher cost of living and a roundtrip to Houston would cost $ 30 worth of gas so I’ll fork over the extra money.
Lucky Bakery and Café is nestled in the small Asian shopping center to the right of Target. It is the west neighbor of «Hair City.» The storefront is tiny. There seems to be a steady flow of customer traffic in and out during a Tuesday late afternoon/​early evening. There are a few tables inside but I’d feel awkward having a private conversation here.
The guy manning the cash register was pretty friendly and smiley – a rare treat among Asian shopkeepers!

Have you ever had egg custard tart? in Austin? It’s here. This is where you need to go. I’ve had Eck Bakery in Houston. I grew up on NYC Chinatown egg custard tarts. Lucky Bakery is the real deal. In Austin, I can’t say that I’ve had better. The crust flakes like it should and the custard is the perfect texture and sweetness. What did you expect? The chef and the owner are both from Hong Kong, the egg custard tart motherland. These are tasty and will set you back around $ 1.50 each. You’re going to need to eat a few.

This is my first time at an Asian bakery and I will definitely go back. They have a variety of individually wrapped breads-​both savory and sweet-​most for only $ 1.49. I tried the hot dog and onion and it was very much like a kolache. For the sweet, I purchased a coconut cream and Bavarian cream. Both were excellent! The bread was soft and the filling was not too sweet.

I LOVE LUCKY BAKERY! This is probably the best Chinese style bakery in Austin and My family and I have always ordered our cakes from here! Usually calling ahead a day or two is fine for ordering cakes and calling in the morning to reserve egg tarts is good as well as they usually run out in the afternoon! This place is owned by a legit canto baker and he is usually working the check out and very friendly.
Chinese style cake is usually lighter and fluffier with a whipped cream type icing on the outside. The cake is not as sweet or heavy, but it is what I prefer! My absolute favorite is the taro cake! The cake itself is just a regular angel food cake/​cloud cake like texture, but the layers of filling inside and the icing on the outside is this delicious taro infused whipped cream! It is not too sweet and it is perfect with the soft cake layers! The cake also comes topped with fresh fruit and the aesthetic appeal is also pretty good! My best friend loves getting the pandan coconut cake here and although I have never had it and I am not a big fan of fresh coconut, I trust her word on it and she gets it every year for her bday!
I also recommend the breads here! Again, the taro cream bread is delicious as the bread evenly covers the taro filling, unlike some places where it is 95% bread and only 5% taro, this place actually gives a decent amount of filling. I also recommend the custard bread, red bean bread, and the BBQ pork breads! The egg tarts here are also pretty good and I am sad that they always sell out so quickly! They are the Portuguese style ones that are a yellow egg custard filled inside of a flaky pastry shell!
Overall, this is my favorite cake place to get in Austin! If you are up for some light, fluffy, not too sweet cake, then this is the right place for you!

First, I love dan tats. In fact, when I got married, I served dan tats instead of a cake. I grew up in Austin, and the only place to get tasty egg custard tarts were Houston (and Dallas, if you’re desperate). But now that Lucky Bakery has opened up, Austin now has legitimate dan tats. These have the soft, silky custard filling with the right amount of sweetness and richness. And the crust is flaky (NOT CAKEY) — the way it should be!
I also picked up a sweet bun while I was at it. I was filled with plenty of custard and the bread was soft with good sweetness.
It’s about time. I’ve been waiting a long time for Austin to get an authentic chinese bakery. I’ll be back for more dan tats and to try some of their other pastries (pork buns, bread rolls, cakes)
My only knock is the price. The dan tats were $ 1.40 where you can get this in Houston for closer to $ 1.00. But being the only place in town, I suppose they can charge what they want.

Lucky me! I’ve been waiting for a legit dan tat 蛋撻 (egg tarts!) place to open here. These little tarts are comfort food for me and I ate this dessert growing up. This review is only on the dan tats.
1. Price — On the high side at over a dollar per tart. In Houston these run about $.90 each. I suppose Lucky can afford to charge this since they have the dan tat monopoly here in Austin.
2. Crust — A flaky buttery crust is ESSENTIAL! Other places go wrong when they make the crust like a cookie or graham cracker pie crust. Lucky Bakery nailed it. You can see all the layers that make it light, flaky and crunchy in Joe C.‘s picture.
3. Custard filling — Nice egg flavor and holds together when you bite into it.
The bakery guy is nice and eager to talk about the bakery and pastries. So happy Lucky Bakery is here!

Uh… this place has been here for a YEAR? And no one told me? For shame. I needed to get a cake last minute for a friend and I didn’t want to go to the HEB. Instead I stopped in lucky bakery, this small awesome spot in the shopping center with Din Ho.
The guy who helped me was super nice. We got egg tarts, curry pies, a couple of cream filled thingies that were awesome and a mocha cake that was light and fluffy and creamy and about $ 20. Mexican bakeries are a dime a dozen here — it’s so cool to find something different and equally awesome.

Worst idea ever.
This place opens up in my new neighborhood and now I have to face the ridiculous amount of desire I have to eat soft pillow-​y Chinese pastries.
If anyone is familiar with these Chinese treats, you’d know that the dough is ethereal and softy. They are so crazy soft! How do they do this? Undoubtedly, with lost of butter I am sure but they serve as the perfect foil for their multitude of fills and delicacies.
Personally, I don’t like this type of pastry in a savory context. They have a master dough that they use and this dough is used for savory and sweet applications. Savory includes shredded pork «buns,» hot dog buns… I don’t know the rest because I never get them.
I do, however, get the other breads. I like the ones that have filling and like all little fat inner Asians, they DO NOT skimp on the filling here. There’s a Bavarian style pastry that is cram packed with bavarian cream, same for the Kaya bun *my personal favorite*
The Kaya bun has a creamy coconut custard filling that has some flaked coconut mixed in. If you like coconut this is your bag… it’s the best. They also have pineapple buns (it just looks like pineapple on the top… I don’t get it… Taro Bun, Egg Custard bun… and many others I don’t know or remember.
I should try getting a cake here. People seem to rave about it.
The staff are also always very nice and quick to ring me up.

Delicious!!! Been looking for a good Asian bakery place in Austin and finally found it! Everything I had was very fresh. I ordered the bbq pork bun, egg tart, red bean and taro Mochi. The egg tart and bbq pork bun is what stood out the most, definitely the best ones I’ve had before. The owner of the store is also very friendly and customer oriented.

Easy review. It’s a tiny, tiny place, but Lucky Bakery is my favorite Asian bakery in town. They finally got their sign up at their new location, on the other side of the building that houses Ramen Tatsu-​Ya.
You know the drill:
1) Grab plastic tray
2) Load up plastic tray with individually plastic bagged (with a sticky tab to hold it shut) delights
3) Take loaded plastic tray to the register
4) Be surprised at how little it all costs
5) Pass out from carb overload

Do you want a classically well-​made Hong Kong-​style egg tart? This is your place. It’s not trying to be overly sweet, like a French fruit tart. Though I’m not sure what temp I’m supposed to like it best at.
Paying only $ 5 for the pandan cake roll? Ridiculous.
Let’s talk about the Pork Sung stuffed bread. Well… I mean, they don’t call it meat wool or pork floss for nothing… A friend warned that it’s like eating carpet. And I was like, yeah, but pork flavored carpet. But still… Carpet. Not a texture I’m in love with. But I’m sure very authentically done here, like everything else, including the gelatinous mochi balls.
I see other reviews saying that they «run out early» of stuff, but I see stuff being brought from the back at all hours of the day. So I’ve never seen the need to rush to get there by a certain time. You are just as likely to see egg tarts fresh from the oven at 3pm as you are in the morning.
The owners always have a nice smile for me. And they even accept credit cards via Square. What more can I ask for?

Lucky Bakery by far makes the best cakes I’ve ever had. After moving to Research Blvd from the Lamar location, they have reopened the bakery and are still serving the best quality foods. Walking into the bakery, you are greeted with tables of Asian pastries.
I recently came here to order a birthday cake for my girlfriend’s 23^rd birthday. I wanted to order the cake a day prior, but they aren’t open on Mondays. I repeat they are not open on Mondays! I called Tuesday morning and they said they could have a freshly baked cake by that afternoon.
I ordered an 8-​inch Asian fruit cake. Now for those that do not know what kind of cake that is, it’s simply a two-​layered sponge cake, filled with whipped cream and fruit in between the layers. The top of the cake is also decorated with whipped cream and fruits (strawberries, grapes, kiwis, peaches). When the guy brought out the cake, I instantly knew that it was going to be the best. The cake was just beautiful. He asked me to hand write on paper what I wanted the cake to say. After handing him the paper, he took the cake to the back to write the words. And guess what, he even wrote the «g» in my handwriting! (see picture) And for a decent $ 29 that’s a good deal!
My girlfriend and I were so excited to try the cake again (we’ve previously ordered cakes here before). To be honest, I think I was excited that it was her birthday just because I could find an excuse to order that cake from Lucky Bakery. Heck, when St. Patrick’s day comes around… let’s order cake! Oh you having a party, I know where to get cake!
The cake was so light, so fluffy, and so moist. This cake had the perfect sweetness level, meaning I could eat the whole cake in one sitting if I wanted to. But we had to control ourselves. For the next few days, the only thing we looked forward to after dinner was leftover cake.
So by now you’re probably thinking «Gary is crazy nuts about this cake.» You bet I am! Order the cake, and I guarantee you will be thinking the same.
