Business Owner

Dr. Mark Castor is a native Texan born in the west Texas oil town of Midland. Except for a four year period in his high school and college days, he has lived his entire life in Texas. He received his undergraduate education at Kansas State Univeristy and Wichita State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Baylor University in Waco, Texas in 1976. From there, he entered Dental School in San Antonio at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1981.

He moved to Austin, Texas to begin his professional career and has gladly remained there ever since. He was married in 1982 and has two children with his wife Lucy. He has been in his present location in South Central Austin since 1986. He has been a continual member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association and the Capitol Area Dental Society since he began his practice in 1981. Dr. Castor and Staff have been incredible in taking care of me. I would recommend him to all my friends and family. As to Chantill… oral cancer screening is part of Today’s dentistry. To have a dentist who doesn’t perform this screening would be absolutely prehistoric. There is NO political correctness when it comes down to your healrh.

I been with Dr Castor for 3yrs and I feel that he is a greast Doctor. The office staff are very friendly and the try their to get you in for appt. I was having some tooth pain and I just call Dr Castor office receptionist got me appointment wrigth away. I recommend him to any one who will need a dentist .Also have family members that go to him to!!!

My tooth broke while eating popcorn at movie theater! and I went there to get a crown. Everyone including Dr Castor were nice and friendly, they gave me quote which was OK considering I didn’t have dental insurance. The crown took a week to be delivered at their office and it turned out that It didnt match the color. They ordered it again and another 10 days and finally they received the crown that was the same color as my teeth. Then I went there and got a crown around at 4:30 and came back home. while I was driving home, the crown came off… really! I called the office and it was pass 5 and they were closed. so I spent night holding that crown and called them next morning. I was scheduled for another appointment at afternoon and Dr. Castor put that crown back in. Even he was surprised that the crown came off. I would have given them 5 stars as I don’t doubt Dr. Castor’s expertise but they left me without tooth a whole month and put me through a lot of hassle!

Dr. Castor is very personable and the hygienists are pleasant even while chiseling away at plaque. Dr. Castor always performs oral cancer and tissue checks which is something I hadn’t had prior to seeing him and find it very reassuring to have someone keeping an eye out for general oral health as well as the specific health of my teeth. A++

Anyone who knows me, knows I have been going thru hell on earth with my teeth. Mark and his staff are kind, helpful and considerate. Mark helped and explained to me what was going on, and how we could fix this. Wow what a difference in attitude, compared to the «dental puppy mills all over town» that just wanted the money.
Mark is one of the best of the best I have found in Texas, and I would recommend my friends and family to him. He helped restore my faith …

I went to Dr. Castor because the reviews on Unilocal were so good. The staff was really nice. However they told me on the phone they accepted my insurance until after I got out of the chair changed their tune and said they didn’t. While in the chair Dr. Castor told his assistant while looking in my mouth,“Ok now time to check for mouth cancer!” To say that out loud was first of all scary and second off all… not very caring. I left that appointment feeling demoralized. Thank god I do not have mouth cancer but why put that weird energy out there to put fear in your patient. Never going back.

Just wow. I didn’t catch the woman’s name at the front desk but she was warm and welcoming. Nicole did my cleaning she was so friendly and from the time I sat down she made me feel as if I was catching up with an old friend. She was very knowledgeable and made me comfortable and excited to meet the doctor speaking highly of him. Sylvia was the doctors assistant and she was also so sweet and funny! The doctor was hands down incredible. His staff is truly a reflection of him. He was gentle, patient and very kind. He made a point to make me feel comfortable with some small talk and cake across very genuine. I won’t be going elsewhere. To top things off my appointment went by quickly! Beyond impressed.

Great dentist. Will not change unless forced. Dr Castor cares about his patients and spends time addressing any concerns or questions. His office provides a comfortable atmosphere and it seems he treats his employees well. He is very fast and efficient. I highly recommend him to everyone. In office wait times for a scheduled appointment can be long but worth the wait.

I met with Dr Castor and was hoping to have him complete a crown. My insurance changed though with the new year and I have to find someone in my lousy HMO network. Paloma discovered this while I was in the exam chair and she and Dr Castor were completely understanding and went out of their way to help me navigate my new insurance. Paloma called a week later to check on me. So, even though I didn’t get my crown here, I’m very impressed with the customer service and helpful staff. Dr Castor was also super professional yet approachable and I really wish he could be my new dentist!

Everyone in Dr. Castor’s office was friendly and helpful! I didn’t have to wait too long– less than 10 mins in the reception area, and then I went back for my cleaning. Janis, the hygienist, was very nice and knowledgeable, but she was definitely NOT gentle during the cleaning. That is my only real complaint. I’ll say this– it wasn’t the worst or most painful cleaning I’ve had, but it also was definitely not the easiest or most pleasant. I have regular cleanings, so I didn’t have any real problems, but still the cleaning took almost an hour and my gums were pretty sore afterward.
Dr. Castor didn’t try to sell me on anything extra (besides recommending a night guard, which I know I need– he told me the price and said he would let me decide, no pressure) and recommended a little reshaping on my front teeth because there is some chipping. He said he would do this free of charge, but we kept talking for a while and I think both of us forgot about it during the rest of the appointment. I only remembered once I was back at work, and am kicking myself now for not taking advantage of that, but it was a nice gesture anyway. He does seem to care about the patients and seems to be rather conservative in treatment, which I appreciate.

I chose Mark Castor’s office for routine dental work, based on the good reviews here on Unilocal.They were initially very welcoming and friendly, but their actual service was poor. I won’t go into gross details, but they were negligent and injured my tongue with their tools. In 30+ years of dentist and orthodontist visits, I’ve never had anything close to this happen. I was also frustrated at their response to the mistake: denial and defensiveness. I got a refund for that particular appointment, which was an ordeal, but they also tried to bribe me to sign legal paperwork. Buyer beware!

Like a lot of people, the idea of going to the dentist frightens me. I haven’t taken very good care of my teeth, and in my mid-​30s it’s starting to show. After reading the wonderful reviews on Unilocal for Dr. Castor, I decided to book an appointment for myself and my fiancée to have our chompers taken care of.
First off, the staff is a group of the loveliest and kindest people I’ve had the experience of working with. After my first visit and cleaning, I experienced some extreme tooth pain from my broken wisdom tooth and ended up in the emergency room from the pain. My fiancée had called their office late that night trying to get a recommendation on what to do, but they were closed (as it was 1am on a Saturday night) and not available.
Despite this, as soon as the next day rolled around we received a phone call from Melanie making sure we were okay and had everything we needed. I want to also mention that they called me back on a SUNDAY when their office was closed. This is dedication and genuine care for their patients that I have never experienced before.
Secondly, Dr. Castor is very kind and patient with his patients. He took time to explain everything that I needed to be done on my first appointment, and when we went back the second time to have some work done on my fiancée he even prescribed some more medication to help with the tooth pain while I waited for my oral surgery appointment.
I would recommend Mark Castor, DDS to anyone that asks for a good dentist in the Austin area.

Dr. Castor is one of the best experiences I’ve had with a dentist. His staff is friendly, I get spoken to like an actual adult, and I don’t have to wait in an eternity in a waiting room. They really make a conscientious effort to make you feel at ease when you’d rather not have a strangers hand in your mouth.

So if you’ve seen me in real life, you know my teeth are pretty jacked up. Or rather, they aren’t the shiniest pearls in the sea. Well, these days they might resemble an oyster pearl from the Gulf, what with all that free oil they keep giving away. This is partially due to my (prior) horrific dental hygiene habits, 12 years of smoking, and daily coffee intake (black please.) Thus, I feared the evil dentist, and avoided him at much cost to my social life for many, many years. Last year I broke off a bunch of one of my teeths somehow, and it needed repairs, and I didn’t have insurance and had to use some cheapo crap place that really, really hurt and took forever and was miserable and oh god why didn’t someone make me floss and brush all the time like you are supposed to?
Anyway last year I got a bitchin’ job with dental benefits and based on prior reviews here, I found Dr. Castor.
So Dr. Castor kicks ass. So does his whole team. Dad-​gummit for the life of me I can’t remember the hygienists’ name who deep cleaned me but she did a fantastic job, pain and anxiety free, which for me is a big deal. (And all this my friends, without the benefit of my dearly beloved NO2.)
In summation, as much as a dentist can be awesome to someone with such effed teeth as mine, I gotta say I love Dr. Castor, his whole office, and the brave work they do on people like mine’s neglected teeth.
