Violist and violinist Kyra McCarthy is a certified Suzuki Instructor and has over thirteen years of teaching experience in both the Suzuki and traditional methods. She teaches viola and violin lessons in her home studio located in Central East Austin and at the Blackerby Violin Shop Studios in Austin. Kyra welcomes all levels and ages to her studio.

Whether you are a child or an adult, learning to play an instrument helps everyone to experience the joy that comes through music making. When learning an instrument in an environment of encouragement and support we develop self-​confidence, discipline, patience, concentration and the ability to try difficult things.

Kyra McCarthy began playing the violin at age seven at the East Bay Waldorf School in Berkeley, California. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Oregon studying with Dr. Leslie Straka. While at the University of Oregon, Ms. McCarthy studied Suzuki pedagogy with Shelly Rich and completed an overview of Suzuki Violin Books 1 – 4. Other Suzuki pedagogy teachers Ms. McCarthy has studied with are: Susan Kempter, Louise Scott and Judy Bossuat. Ms. McCarthy began teaching in 1998 as an adjunct professor with the University of Oregon Community Music Institute Suzuki Strings Program where she instructed private and group Suzuki violin and viola lessons for four years. In 2002 Ms. McCarthy relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where she taught Suzuki violin for two years in a public school that had implemented a «Suzuki in the Schools» program. Since moving to Austin, Texas in 2005 Ms. McCarthy currently teaches at Blackerby Violin and her home studio.
