Onion Creek Club Inc

I played the Onion Creek Golf course this Sunday. I was looking for a new experience and a new golf experience in Austin. I’d been aware of the course for 20 years but never played it. So it was about time. I found it on the Golf Now website and decided to go for it.
First I love the location. Its very easy to get to from the the freeway and for some reason I like that. It is operated like a country club (because it is) but this is important because you it feels very relaxed and you feel all the pleasure of a conservative golf experience. That means the range is well maintained with balls placed there for you, the staff is friendly and having a pleasant time, and people are there to just serve those coming in the door rather than selling a bunch of green fees that is so prevelent today.
The course seemed very well maintained and I enjoyed the layout. The greens were very nice and rolled true. I’d say the greens were medium speed, definitely not slow.. I played the original course and I’m guessing its pretty old so it wasn’t as challenging as a modern course but that suits my game just fine.
Overall I had a great time and had the experience I was hoping for and was surprised by all the great features of the course. This is definitely the type of place I’d like to play regularly if I had the chance.

We were recently in Austin for a golf trip, and when something came up and we couldn’t get on one of the courses we wanted, someone suggested Onion Creek. The only real plus was that the course has an interesting layout with decent potential to be a good golf course. On the negative side, the course appears to have almost no maintenance or staff, and no watering program. Many of the tees don’t even really have grass (the condition of 17 tee was nothing short of LOLz), much less the fairways and rough. The snack bar was really bad, and the range was quite chewed up. The practice green, however, was large and well maintained.
It was about $ 90, so I guess you have to temper your expectations. But still, I at least expect tee boxes with grass and a decent hot dog at the snack bar.

I recently was a member at Onion Creek Club and I will share my review with you. I believe it has some pluses and minuses.
Good:
1. Member culture: If you live in this neighborhood or nearby, you should join this club. It has an almost small town feel to it in that you will quickly get to know almost everyone and with that you will develop great friendships. The people here have had a positive impact on my life quality.
2: Golf: The course is beautiful, fun, and challenging. The MGA (Men’s golf association) and WGA are both very active and offer challenging and fun golf events.
3: Tennis: The courts look to be well maintained and there are even two clay courts. There is not much activity at the courts so it seems like a court is always available for you to use.
4. Pool: The pool is large though it could use a facelift.
5. Food: The $ 5 burger on Saturdays is a great burger.
6. Peace and Quiet: If you need to take an important client to lunch, it will be quiet here. There is a reason it is quiet, more on that below.
7. Price: For a private club, this seems to be one of the best deals I have seen. Very affordable.
Bad:
1. Dining Room Food Service: amazingly bad… I don’t know how many times I have not been able to even get my ice tea refilled. It is not the servers, it is a management problem because it has been this way for as long as I can remember. The servers incentives are even quite bad because they automatically charge a tip based on the price of your meal instead of letting you tip at your own discretion. IMO, the bad service also has some benefits… the restaurant is very quiet and open. If you take someone to lunch it is almost a private occasion. Just beware that the service will probably be awful.
2. Pool food and drink service: again, amazingly bad. good luck getting a drink or any service. You have to go to them, self-​service, and you still pay the tip. Say you and your wife are 2 of only 5 people at the pool, relaxing on a floaty on a nice summer afternoon, and you want a margarita. You have to get out of the pool, march your wide butt over to the drink hut, burn your feet on the way, and then order a drink yourself, wait around for it, and then you still pay the service fee. This is just an example. Poor training of the staff, who could easily come and ask you if you want a drink and deliver it right to you while you relax.
3. Private golf outings: Sometimes it is frustrating to get a tee time. I work during the week and so I only have weekends for golf and I try to get a tee time, but they have all these private tournaments booked. What am I paying golf fees for if I can’t get on the course on a Saturday morning?
4. Maintenance: The buildings have a run down look and there is kind of a smelly 70s décor going on. E.g. The fitness room kind of reminds me of an old lady’s apartment, one who doesn’t shower. The pool is in also need of a make over and they only have about 8 or nine lounge chairs… it is like they couldn’t afford to put chairs around the pool.
5. Family: I don’t think there is much in it for kids. They have some camps, but they don’t appear to be all that great.
So that is what I feel is the good and the bad of Onion Creek Club…

Very pretty course

I played golf here. A couple observations:
1. The check in lady is a Nazi. Make SURE your shirt is tucked in. Even if you are in the shop, make sure it is tucked in.
2. Crappiest snack bar ever for a country club.
3. Golf course is very nice. Nice water hazards. Nicely maintained. I’d definitely play here again with my shirt tucked in.
