Playland Skate Center

Mommy daughter skate date! Success!!! We pulled into a very unassuming and decrepit building, almost wanting to leave before giving it a chance… We walked in and were greeted by wonderfully fun music, activities and a classic shiny wooden rink!!! I always enjoyed skating as a child, so it was a huge treat to teach my girl! We had a blast and I couldn’t be prouder of her growing abilities in the rink. We will be making this place part of the family date/​game night rotation and bring the boys with is next time.

This place is fun for the family. My complaint is that they nickel and dime you. They attract the kids with a playground then charge you for it. They don’t tell you when you buy your tickets at the front that if you need the skate mate skate helper and to play in the playscape each are an extra fee. Now that wouldn’t be the worst thing but then you have to pay at the front again. Go prepared when you go. If you can get past that, the kids had a blast!

I go to the Pluckers around the corner weekly and this place has been here the whole time (behind the Nissan dealership)!
Oh goodness, it brought the child out of me! It is so much fun! The rink is in great shape considering how old this place is, the skates are also in great shape. It’s $ 8 per person and you can rent rollerblades for an extra $ 3. You are also able to bring you own skates as well and they also sell some if you would like to purchase your own.
There are walker rentals for those who are new to skating so that is nice for the little kids just learning. There are lockers to keep your items in, for 50 cents per use, also a $ 25 lost key fee too.
I left my shoes out though and no one took them so that is nice. It seems that a lot of people tend to do that as well. There is seating by the skate rental area as well as seating around the rink.
There is a small snack bar there with a few items, but I’m not sure what they have to offer. I haven’t gotten anything there yet. There are a lot of parties there as well too. They have a little game area in the back as well.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon, between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm, with the family and had a blast. The place started filling up around 7:30 pm with the night crowd. This is your typical roller skating rink that is so similar to the ones that I visited when I was growing up, except this one had some extras that weren’t around when I was younger. Great place. Reasonably priced.

Fun skate center for kids and parties and what-​not. They also have roller derby here some nights. The rink is good-​sized, and there’s a separate section for little kids, plus a playscape and some video games.
It seems well organized, and there are races, birthday dances, limbo contests and other things to keep it interesting. Lots of parking and reasonable prices.

Definitely a cool place to have some with your family. I haven’t been roller skating in quite some time but I still had it in me. I rented the roller blades instead. I couldn’t do the old school look. They have these homemade training roller walkers for kids to learn how to skate by themselves.
Food is nice place to grab you some junkfood. They have a skate area in the back for children to learn at their own pace or they can skate in the main roller area. They even have a playground for the little ones to play in towards the back area. I will say I wish all that stuff towards the front so it could be easily more accessible but I understand the building has been here for quite some time. Still looks like the 80’s inside. Don’t worry they play up to date music. They do all the fun party time games, dances, and races. They announce when the party is ready for everyone to go sing happy birthday.
I asked if they offered military discount and the attendant said yes. I was like awesome! Thank you for honoring service members and veterans!

Not a bad place for skating. If you come on weekends — lot of birthday parties happening, so expect lot of crowd.
So, we are not allowed to bring in any snacks, water, etc. But, when I go to the snack area — the pretzel is light up with ‘Fresh n Hot’ sign, but when I bought it — they put it in a microwave. I ask why and they say because the pretzel is ‘frozen and cold’.They are a business and trying to make money on everything possible.
Another rule — my little kid does not skate but wanted to see Mom skate, but they wouldn’t allow unless we pay $ 8 fee for my kid.
I like skating area and do not like their rules, their staff and prices.

I skated here when I was a kid and now my daughter skates here. It’s a pretty straight up smelly skating rink with that crazy multi colored carpet. It gets the job done. There are snacks, a little arcade, and a playscape for the littles. Unfortunately, the bathroom is completely inaccessible by wheelchair. I sure hope I don’t have to pee in the next hour!

So I’m doing this for the families that might want to come here. Here’s some info if you haven’t been in a while but wanna bring the kids. :)
First off, its a roller rink so put your kids in jeans and bright tops to make it easier to keep track of them. Its hot once they get moving so put their hair up and wear t shirts. Friday and Saturday are the busiest days so you might do better on Sunday. Its going to cost you $ 8 per kid and if they are new and are going to need a walker to stay upright then its an additional $ 5 per walker.
They have a small skating area in the back for little ones to practice on until they are brave enough to hit the big rink. The reason this is only a four star review is because the walkers and the playscape are at the back, but you can’t pay for them there. Which is stupid. I had to leave the kids at the back alone because i wasn’t going to try to hobble them to the front and back again to get the walkers. This system needs an adjustment. Speaking of newbies, they have free lessons (with admission purchase) on Sundays from 11:00 — 11:45am. They lock the doors at 11:10 so don’t be late.
The food is pizza, nachos, (nachos are a good deal! huge serving) hotdogs and the like. Its like $ 5 – 6 per kid if you want them to have a meal item and a small drink. If you are planning on coming back on a semi regular basis the best option for drinks by far is to splurge on the «Playland» water bottle $ 10 and add the kids name to for $ 2. Free water refills and they’ll fill it with soda for $ 2 as well. A good deal considering its the size of a med drink which cost $ 4.xx.
The floor is hardwood and pretty well kept. The reviews about the music aren’t wrong. They are trying to be a bit more modern but they need a better selection of songs. Over all, I can’t really complain about the music, its loud, the lights are bright and flashing. Better music would improve things but their choices don’t detract much from the experience. Honestly the kids don’t care much about the music, its more can i stay upright and how fast can i go?
The bathrooms were rustic looking but functional. They appeared to be clean as well. Small stalls are pretty standard as everyone is on skates and the small space helps you get back up…
For me it was a blast from the past from when i used to skate as a kid in the 90’s. I got to recapture my childhood for a while and I’m pretty pleased that i remembered how to skate at all. Its been 14 years since I did this last! I wasn’t the only adult trying to relearn my lost skills so don’t be afraid to give it a try yourself.
Overall the kids had a blast, even though they are new and fell a lot (expect this) and are somewhat sore today, the first thing they asked me this morning was if we could go back again this weekend. I think that speaks for it self. It’s great exercise and the kids are having too much fun to notice. This place could easily be the single best rink in Austin with a few minor tweaks.

Pretty cool but just a tiny bit pricey I think. Rink was big but I’d like to check out an adult skate for sure.

I honestly had so much fun coming here. I guess we came on a really good day because there weren’t that many children around and the few that were there were very respectful. As well as the pro skaters that were around. Everyone was real respectful and was having a good time.
I had no troubles with the staff, they were friendly and had no problems switching out skates for me and my group.
The skate floor is great! They had plenty of tables and they also had some cool events. I loved that everyone from young to old and pros to beginners were just there enjoying themselves. Would definitely come here again.

Found out about Adult Only Skate Night on Tuesdays. Plenty of spaces to park, went in and was amazed of how open and spacious the place is.
The floor is easy to skate on, it’s wood but not uneven at all. The music is diverse, I like skating to music more in the roller skating era. Something about the melody that makes you want to skate all night.
For $ 8 it was worth it.

The skate floor is great but the staff here were absolutely terrible. Every single person we interacted with was rude and unhelpful. The skates, tables, entrance, and other equipment look like they have never been updated or replaced. Again — skating was good but the staff ruined the day — this place seriously needs a personnel update! Will not return!

The wood floor is freaking awesome… but that’s it.
Staff is rude if your not a regular. The speed skaters are dicks. They shove you out of their way and cut right in front of you and the staff will not do anything about it. We also had a rolling road block of backward skating derby girls.
Save your $ 8 and go to MYEC for $ 5 where you can drink and skate on adult night.

Playland. The place where EVERY walk of life comes in to skate and truly have a great time. I know I have NO business judging, but it still is weird to me when I see 50 year old men in there, looking like they walked out of the 80’s skating backwards on a Saturday afternoon. JS.
I was a Skateland & Skateworld kinda girl back in my day, lol, so it wasnt until I had children that we started going to Playland. My sister however, was a Playland girl. We all love that it still a fun time for all the kids, they get to skate for free for the year, once a month, and they have the cart-​helper-​skate-​PVC pipes w wheels-​things for the kiddos that cant skate. Theyve got a massive jungle gym in the back, AND new wooden floors!
Family fun, definitely.
Altho I do miss the days of having a DJ in the DJ Booth.

When I was in 8^th grade, my friends and I RULED the roller rink. I mean we OWNED it. Every weekend we’d go to skate, fast, slow, backwards, limbo, hokey pokey, and play Ms Pacman and eat junk food and listen to the devil’s music and slow skate and gossip about who was slow skating with who and cuss and pass notes and go steady and break up all in the span of 3 hours. Course, our moms dropped us off and picked us up, but for awhile we felt independent, free, adult.
Going to Playland as a real adult is NOTHING LIKE THAT.
Apparently skating is one of those «use it or lose it» skills. Those of you who know me know I can’t got to a theme party without a costume. So, yeah, I looked good. I skated BAD. I rocked the short shorts and knee high unicorn socks and had a blast dancing around in my skates… on the carpet. I even got to do the Flame Thrower to «Stroke Me». DJ Dolomike’s tunes were rockin! Then I hit the rink and looked like an octagenarian on ice… or a newborn giraffe… or a newborn giraffe on ice. All legs and arms akimbo. And then… then when I’d taken a few turns around and was starting to get my glide on, feeling confident, I of course wiped out. RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SNACK AREA ANDTHE CROWD. And lemme tell ya, getting up with wheels on your feet ain’t graceful either. Apparently my costume shoulda been one of those Sumo outfits. As my friendcoughjackncough said to me that nite, «At our age, if we fall here, we hurt FOR LIFE.»
Thankfully I just ended up with a knee raspberry that a cheap hooker would be proud of. I spent the rest of the evening eating pizza and cake and drinking boxed wine (no glass please!) and chatting and admiring all the real skaters. Oh, and I did get to slow skate with MY man… well, if you call him standing still and me rolling around him on the carpet slow skating.
This really was a fun nite… still great to go with friends, eat junk, listen to fun music, play air hockey, and gossip but I’ll leave the skating to the Superfreaks from now on.

On my 7^th birthday I got my first pair of roller skates. It was probably the most memorable of my childhood gifts. That summer I would wake up at 6am and patiently wait for the sun to rise so I could strap on my white and blue skates laced with Smurfs and topped with blue poms.
Mike L. recently celebrated his 40^th birthday and rented out Playland Skating Center. Wow did I forget how amazing and free it feels to roller skate! We had a blast making laps around Playland’s large skating rink and getting in touch with our inner 12 year old sense of adventure. You can bring in your own food, adult beverages (it is BYOB on Tuesdays only) and they have ample tables to set up your spread. They also rent lockers to store your valuables.
The staff was great and quickly whipped out our size skates.
Although I wasn’t graceful enough to be a «dancing queen» I did have the time of my life! Come here on Tuesday when it is adult skate night and remember those adult bevies.

Walking in this place causes significant déjà vu for me. I’ve been here before, in the 90s for my own birthday parties and other friend’s birthday parties. I used to live 5 minutes away from here and now I do again. I probably skated here with Johnny Depp’s fiancé back in the day. Seriously, how can you not love something from your childhood that has stood the test of time?! Especially when you think about how quick Austin is to bulldoze things for a better profit these days!
Even though this place is OLD, they have really kept it up. Its next to some Antique Mall place and behind a car dealership.
Adult skate night (18+) is every Tuesday from 7 – 10:30pm. It costs $ 8 which I think is pretty freaking high. Roller blades are an additional $ 3. But they gotta stay in business somehow. This is also a great place to rent out if you want to have a party and not have a bunch of little kids around. It is not BYOB during public hours.
I seriously suck at skating from the years I was absent from skating, but I’d totally do it again. And I’m happy to have an option to do something different every now and then.

Omigod y’all! Adult Skate Night is where it’s at! Get a bunch of your friends together on a Tuesday night, don your knee-​high socks and favorite 80’s hair band t-​shirt, pay $ 8 to rent a pair of vintage beige skates, and go relive your childhood (or the childhood you wish you had). It’s 18+ only, so you don’t have to worry about any youngsters reminding you just how old you really are.
The DJ plays requests and randomly declares songs as ladies only, men only, couples skate, and reverse direction, just to keep you on your toes. The snack bar serves up pizza, nachos, hot dogs, sodas, and candy — all of which seem overpriced initially, but after a few hours of skating, you’ll gladly pay any price for a slice of pizza. I only wish they also sold alcohol — or at least allowed BYOB — but I guess I can see how that would be a little bit dangerous.
So… see you there next Tuesday?

We (two adults) went on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 pm. Birthday party time! We were surrounded by children ranging from 5 to teen, and their parents — so we were definitely out of place without a child in tow. But we were in town briefly and who can pass up this blast from the past?
Four-​wheel roller skate rental and admission cost us $ 8 each. The main rule here is spit out your gum — there are containers for it and it’s a $ 2 fine if you’re caught with it. The rink was a good size and well maintained.
Because it was bday party time, there was a brief pause for races and games, and the hokey pokey, but then free skating. The kids there loved it; there were rails that roll to assist children who aren’t great skaters, which was nice but ended up tangling the kids when they fell. We tried not to laugh.
There is a food area that we didn’t venture into because of the parties, and a kids skate area that is the equivalent of the small dog area of a dog park. There’s also a few standard games: air hockey, skee ball, and other video games.
It was a fun time, but we had to leave after an hour because the swarm of kids was so thick that we could no longer really skate. I’d avoid this time to go, but I’d definitely return on my next visit to Austin.
