Ramen Tatsu-Ya

Be ready for a small wait and don’t worry about if it will be worth it. It is! We try to get here on off-​peak times of the day to avoid the crowd but if you can’t then don’t worry because the line moves pretty fast since their service is super fast and the food comes out even faster. The food is pretty amazing. I love ramen and have been to many popular places nationwide but this is by far the best ramen place I have tried so far.
I usually get the Original Shoyu and my wife gets the Miso Not. They are both great. If you like a rich, meaty, and fatty broth then this is it. If you want something a bit lighter and more flavorful as far as «asian» flavors go then the Miso not is also a good one. Another go-​to for us is the Chashu Bowl. It’s a rice pork belly dish. I don’t know what they put in it but it’s really heavenly. Great service and food. one tiny tiny flaw is since they are so busy the employees want to get you out of there quickly so they have a tendency to «clear off» your table really really fast hehe ~ Plenty of parking. They don’t accept Discover.

So. Lezzzbehonest. This place has ATOOOON of hype around it… so I’m not gonna lie, I give it a weak 4 stars bc I was expecting to be blow out of the holy shiitake sauce I want this for my last meal kind of good… it wasn’t that. But it was good.
So there you go. It’s a restaurant with unique food, great service, and the weird Austin vibe. Worthy of «yay! i’m a fan» four star rating.

I’m not a «soup person». This was UNREAL. I will be coming back here regularly. The mi so hot was enough for two people. The slider was amazing. The hush piggies were unique and delicious. Great atmosphere. Don’t bring your kid. Date night with spectacular flavor!

The atmosphere is what bothered me most. It’s pretentious, which matches the menu. If you’ve only got one item on the menu, it better be good. This was just meh… way too greasy, way to $$$ for what you get and just didn’t have a great deal of flavor. This is not a good Ramen spot, there’s better out there. I won’t be back.
Loud, the music was so darn loud and the energy of the place was just frantic. The lady at the counter tried to make me sit at the bar, I don’t mean she suggested, I mean she told me twice… very Soup Nazi-​esque, very off-​putting.

Alright, I’ve visited this place five times, so I feel comfortable saying the following.
This place is amazing!
Seriously, I’ve gone thirty years without using chop sticks, but I’ve learned (sorta) how… just to eat here! Each time I leave, I’m already thinking about the next time I can come!
I will warn you that there’s almost always a line, and it’s usually a twenty plus minute wait. There’s limited seating, so you are assigned a spot while you wait inside to order. If you’re going solo, you’re probably sitting at the bar.
The staff are friendly and happy to help, or answer questions. If it’s you’re first time, you’ll have a few.
Now. The food.
That’s what it’s all about, for any restaurant. I may not have much experience with ramen (outside of the packages, whoops), but I DO know good food, and this place is GREAT!
I’ve tried their tonkotsu (original ramen), a «special of the day» brisket tsukemen (dipping ramen), and their mi-​so– hot. It’s all great, but until they offer the brisket again I’m addicted to the mi-​so-​hot! It’s absolutely full of flavor, with just the right amount of spice to break a light sweat without burning your lips! Word of advice, get extra noodles. You can never go wrong with extra noodles.
This place offers drinks, both alcoholic and not. But if you do drink, get a beer with the mi-​so-​hot. The Sapporo just makes it better.
Not exactly kid friendly, mainly because of the line and the cramped space, so leave the kids with a sitter and enjoy a night out, but try this place whatever it takes. You won’t regret it!

I’ve been here so many times I’ve lost count and I don’t even take food pictures anymore. I like going for lunch because of the noodles they use are different than the dinner ones. The broth is always flavorful and warms me up right away. Usually one of the first places I tell people to try in Austin.

Had tonkotsu. Best ramen I’ve ever had. The bowl was hearty, sweet, and delicious. I was skeptical the egg wasn’t gong to taste good with it but i quickly changed my mind after first the first bite. Will have to try and Come back next time we have a cold front.

Took a spur of the moment trip to Austin and what is good on a cold day? Ramen! We got there and the line was out the door. After freezing outside for 45 mins, we were finally in! Once inside, wait (in line again) to place your order at the register. A person will guide you to a place to sit with your number.
We ordered the tonkotsu original, Mi-​So-​Not, side of curry rice bowl, and a corn bomb. Tonkotsu had a good bone broth and noodles were just the right consistency. The runny egg that comes with it was delicioussssss! What I really enjoyed was the Mi-​So-​Not ramen. The bone broth was also really good, but the combination of all the elements in the ramen (miso, napa cabbage, corn, bean sprouts, ground pork, egg) was scrumptious. I literally raved about it the entire night, I’d recommend trying it out! The side of Japanese curry was actually pretty good also, loved the sweet pickles! I also decided to try out the corn bomb just because it sounded interesting, but when it came out it was a small ball of corn, butter and honey (which you’re supposed to put into your broth). I actually didn’t taste a difference when mixed and wouldn’t actually order it again.
All in all, great place to get some ramen if you’re in Austin, just be prepared to stand in line for it!

Came here to check out the hype.
Me and hubbie each got the original, a corn bomb, chilli bomb, and house sake. The total was $ 30.
The line was long but moved fast. By the time our ramen came out the line was almost out the door!
The ramen was undercooked for my liking. It could have gone for a minute longer. For the price I expected more meat. I kept digging and sifting and got 2 medallions… I don’t see anyone else saying anything so maybe I’m just a big hungry Texas gal. The corn bomb really added a silky depth of flavor to the already yummy broth. My sake was good, your typical house stuff.
Hubbie and I both left here hungry. We both looked at each other like «did we really just pay 25 for ramen» For what I paid and what I got I just dont see the value.
3 stars for fresh ingredients, seriously flavorful and delicious broth, and décor!

Ehh. I was hoping to really like this place but I didn’t. We got there at around 5−6pm and there was a line outside the door to get in. It was freezing 50 degrees. So I would suggest bringing a warm jacket if you come during winter. They personally allow a few guests in the door to order food at the front desk. Then you get a table and wait for the food to arrive.
SERVICE: The only customer service I got was from the cashier and she was polite. You don’t really get a full on interaction from an actual server. They literally just serve the food to you, so I wound assume no need to tip lol.
FOOD: The Tonkatsu noodle was small noodles. I prefer thicker noodles. The soup was too liquidy, not thick at all. The appetizers weren’t good :/​but I really liked my boyfriends noodle dish, the tsukemen. That one has thick noodles so I basically ended up stealing his noodles and gave him all mine. Also, they season their egg with sousauce so it is a little sweet and salty when you bite into it. Some people, like my boyfriend, really enjoy this. But it wasn’t that great. I’d rather have the traditional egg. Lastly, I didn’t enjoy the green tea pudding thing, other then the crumbly stuff on top.
AMBIANCE: I enjoyed the art work of the place and it has really loud music so the vibe is on point.
OVERALL, I wish I could have enjoyed it like most people. But I didn’t :/​I guess I just enjoy the traditional Japanese ramen. This place has a more modern twist to it, which isn’t a bad thing. I just have my own preference.

I stopped in here for lunch the other day while on my break at work, I was going to order out but there was no number listed on their website. Now, I understand I could have Googled it, but because it wasn’t on their website I felt like it indicated they might not do to-​go orders, but I refused to believe that in 2016 a business wouldn’t offer their food to-​go. And much to my surprise and dismay, they in fact don’t offer their food to-​go, which I think is totally ridiculous.
It was difficult to find a parking spot because of their location, and it was incredibly crowded inside. Being able to snag something for pick-​up and head back to work would have been a much more convenient option and I’m sure others can agree. As far as seating goes, I took a spot at the bar, and I have to say unless you are on the taller side the chances of you falling on your face are pretty high because the bar stools are insanely tall. I almost crash landed on the table behind me as I tried to crawl on. Getting off the damn stool was even worse, I almost fell on the girl seated next to me who earlier almost fell on me while trying to sit down.
Because it was lunch time I ordered one of their only two ramen options, the Ol’ Skool. I have to say I was incredibly disappointed and I did not like anything about my meal. It was greasy, oily, flavorless, and had an intense meaty taste that I didn’t like the second I caught a waft of it. It’s supposed to be made from chicken broth but it was so dark and heavy, I couldn’t bring myself to finish most of it and pretty much just munched on the noodles. All the ingredients took on the flavor of this broth and I couldn’t even eat the bamboo shoots let alone the hard boiled egg.
I don’t understand why everyone raves about Ramen Tatsu-​Ya, I didn’t enjoy any part of my experience and will be sticking to Michi Ramen from now on.

Ramen quality control: check! Tonkatsu is my fave – tsukemen might be second.
Not raising prices every other month like some places do: check!

Dessert: check! — YES DESSERT. Their yuzu tapioca was legit! Could be bigger for $ 5 … but I’m proud of RT for getting all of the flavors right!

This is seriously as good as it gets for ramen. The décor and ambience of this place is what you would see in a typical Asian drama. There’s not much to choose from, basically the classic noodles or the vegan noodles, which makes ordering that much easier haha. I went with the classic and got grilled mushrooms on top. DELISH. There was an instant pop of flavor from the broth, the noodles were the perfect texture, and the egg was silky and smooth. Ugh, I want another bowl just thinking about it. We got some appetizers as well. The edamame was served warm, which I loved! I always had it cold, so it was definitely a treat. The yodas (I believe that’s how it’s spelled) was out of this world. It was the best brussel sprouts I ever had. It was caramelized with some sauce. I wish I knew so I could try to make it again.
Overall, I would come back to this place instantly if I was in town again! You Austinites got it good!

I felt the need to write an update after having a number of visits under my belt now as well as my having tried almost their entire menu. My favorite at this location is their Tonkatsu Ramen with extra chasu and extra ajitama. It’s delicious and I have to give them credit for the flavor as it’s the closest I’ve had in the US to what I’ve had in Japan. That being said, they don’t nickel and dime you in Japan, yet they do here unfortunately. I do like their Tsukemen more at their south location. Their brussels sprouts are tasty too. I’ve found their chasu bowl to be inconsistent (rare here though as mostly they are a model for consistency). Sometimes it’s dry, other times it’s fantastic. Their curry is just ok and their Katsu slighter isn’t bad. Their desserts are decent too.
If you come here for lunch, expect to not be wowed. They do not have the pork broth for lunch and it’s simply not the same experience or caliber of meal vs their dinner menu. Also I added their bamboo once and it tasted canned to me which is unfortunate because overall, their quality seems really high. Despite the $ 15+ price for their bowl of ramen the way I like it, I’m still definitely a fan. Service is good (still have not had to wait in line longer than 20 mins) and I like their minimalist décor and the feel of the atmosphere. Of the places I’ve had ramen in Austin, Tatsuya is still the gold standard in my opinion.

Have been coming here since the first location opened, not as often as i would like but often enough to know that the service and quality of the food have remained exceptional.
Food wise, i have had all the ramens on the menu, all are great! My favorites are the Miso-​Hot and the tsukemen (dip ramen). Both great in their own way. The miso-​hot is very miso-​y, rich and full of flavor, it could be spicier for me but they do offer spicy «bombs» to add to your soups. The tsukemen is so unexpected yet so goood! The noddles are served separate from the dipping broth which is very concentrated and very rich and full of bits of pork: D. Definitely not a light dish. OH. i recommended getting their marinated eggs (if you like eggs, of course) they are amazing! and cooked to that perfect gooey center stage.
Atmosphere, the restaurant itself is pretty small. i would say it accommodates maybe 50 at a time? If you are a large group (5+), don’t be surprise if you have to wait longer to sit together or break up the group. The wait is usually around 20 – 30 mins during popular dining times and busier days. Never had to wait more than that. The restaurants restrooms are covered in black, white and red painting of Japanese inspire scenes (amine ish maybe) favorite is the face of a man on the paper towel dispenser!
Service. the service is nice. You can tell everyone who works there knows their job and they try to do it efficiently to accommodate the growing lines outside. You could feel a bit rushed if you went there to have a long meal. Usually once your bowl is empty or have stopped eating, the table is asked to be cleared. It’s fine if that’s what you expect.
Just try it out. it’s worth the hype. Enjoy!

My sisters and I are from out of town. We come from big food cities such as San Fran, Dallas, and Houston; so we know what food is suppose to taste like. We’re big foodies and saw the raving reviews from this place; so we excitedly came with empty stomachs. We waited in line for lunch and found out that we could only order off the lunch menu. Disappointed, but not discouraged, we decided to order the OL’ SKOOL RAMEN. We’re the type of bunch that would order different dishes and share, but the menu was so limited in variety that it was impossible to choose anything other than the ol’ skool.

Ummm. did I ask for a bowl of salt and grease/​oil? I’m sure I ordered a bowl of ramen. My sisters and I saw the thick layer of grease in our bowls and were surprised by how oily everything was. It was chilly outside; so I guess the ramen needed to be coated with oil in order to stay warm. I tend to stick with pork based broth, but since I only had a limited variety of choices I chose a chicken based broth and man did I make a wrong decision! The broth wasn’t flavorful because the salt masked everything. It was so overpowering that any little flavor that was in the bowl completely just disappeared, and the noodles were a bit undercooked because they were hard to eat. All in all, this bowl was a disaster!
BAEZILLA– sparkling thai basil limeade
This drink sounded so refreshing and different; so I had to try it out. My sisters and I ordered 3 of them to share among ourselves. Another disappointment to say the least! It was sour not sweet, flat not sparkling, and unappealing not good. I’ll pass on this.
A huge disappointment! I’d rather eat home-​cooked ramen. The MSG would be a better alternative to all the salt I’ve ingested from the few bites that were taken from my bowl. Everyone raves about this place, but I don’t see what’s the hype. Maybe I’ll come back and give them another try for dinner instead of lunch, but it’s already such a huge let down. We’ll see. I’ll have to wait about 3 months before I return. I gotta let all that salt out of my system first.

I have heard amazing things about this place and guess what? They did not disappoint! Me and my buddies drove 3 hours from Dallas just to try the ramen and get our fix. All along in the car ride we prayed that this place did not disappoint and that our 6 hour overall drive was not for mediocre ramen…
As soon as we arrived they had a line wrapped to the back of the building (that’s a good thing… kinda). The line moved pretty fast and when we got in and sunk our teeth into our first piece of chashu we almost passed out. IT WAS AMAZING! The broth was a solid 10 and so were the soft boiled eggs. The ramen was chewy and not soggy and man I wish I lived closer to this ramen haven!

There’s a reason why there is always a line outside. Besides only accommodating for a small amount of people at a certain time, the ramen itself is delicious. I found myself ordering the dipping ramen. I’ve had different types of ramen both in LA and New York, but this place in Austin wins. I added extra corn. The only thing I would wish is an extra piece of pork and other alcohol options like cocktails.
The line moves pretty quickly so don’t worry about waiting too long.

It was good but not great. I’m searching for greatness. Glad I didn’t have to stand in a line.
Staff were friendly, prices were a little pricey. Sitting was cramped. The broth was not bad when I added the extra spice… it made it a lot better… I guess I’m comparing it with a place I had in New York City called Ippudo… which was hands-​down some of the best Ramen I’ve ever had so maybe this isn’t a fair review but again I’m looking for great in this town so the search goes on…

cause this is ramen and the other stuff i’ve been slurping away at was a phony!
i got the miso-​hot with out beef added pickled ginger (i added an egg but it comes iwth an egg so rookie mistake)
we got the Brussels sprouts appetizer… so yummy and sweat/​savory unlike any sprouts ive had, you can also add them into your ramen which was recommended but i decided to try them alone and i think that was the better choice for the ramen i ordered.
unfortunately for strict veggis they only have a veterinarian option on Sunday but i took out the meat and accepted the fact id be having a beef broth
