Description

Specialties

We offer quality dry cleaning and laundry with an emphasis on personal and friendly service. We are not a discount dry cleaner. We take pride in our work and in doing our best to please our customers. We offer typical dry cleaning and laundry service; we also clean wedding dresses, comforters, leather items, and furs. We have a seamstress who performs simple repairs and alterations.

History

Established in 1950.

Delwood Cleaners was an original tenant of the Delwood Shopping Center, which was located where the Fiesta Supermarket now sits, on the corner of IH-35 and E. 38 ½ Street. In 1960, we moved to our current location at 1406 E. 38 ½ Street. The neon sign out in front, which still (usually) works, is original to the building. At one time, the cleaners also operated the only cloth diaper service in Austin, called Stork Diaper Service, and you can still see the name on our sign today, even though we don’t clean diapers anymore. Much of the equipment we use to process clothing is also original to the business, purchased during the heyday of American manufacturing, when quality and longevity were both expected and integral to the success of a business. We strive to maintain that same attitude today, even though a lot has changed in the last 60+ years. Dropping off clothes with us today is a lot like it was in 1950 – no computers, no gimmicks, just quality service.

Meet the Business Owner

Christopher C.

Business Owner

First, an observation: It’s strange to write your own bio. Anyway… I live in Wilshire Wood (right behind the cleaners) with my wife and two children. I grew up in Austin, graduated from Austin High, graduated from the University of Texas, and (somehow) made it through law school. The cleaners has been important part of my life for a long time. When I was a baby, it cleaned my diapers, and working here as a young adult gave me both a paycheck and an insight in how to effectively interact with people of all different types and backgrounds. I met my wife at the cleaners. I love this business and all the people I’ve met here over the years. This business is not about making a profit for me; I am interested in providing quality and service, and proving (or at least trying to prove) that you can run a business like it is still 1950. I also like this place because I get to work with my father everyday (and even get to tell him what to do every now and then).
