Finally figured out a few Silkcut mysteries today while getting a fresh combover before work starts tomorrow. The guy who cuts my hair is named Johnny, and he is damn good. Yeah, it took me a few visits to figure out his name. There was a bunch of people waiting for a haircut today, yet he still took all the time needed to be as thorough as possible. And, for the third time now, I say again that this was my best haircut yet. As far as getting your hair washed afterwards is concerned, they charge an extra $ 2 and you have to ask for it before the end of your haircut. I swear they used to do it for free, and that’s probably where the confusion came from in my past reviews. Anyways, they finally get this fifth star. It’s still $ 14 for a men’s cut. Get your hair washed afterwards and leave a twenty if you want an equally awesome experience next time around. Haven’t been disappointed yet.

Asian male with extremely thin-fine hair/strong upward hair growth. Hair is hair right? Why make such a fuss? You’re a guy? Just deal with it. End of story. — - — - - Based on my experience(s) with current recruiting/hiring practices of companies, I’d say the demand for a good cut is very high, if not essential for your inner job seeker. Whether your on the fence about it, one foot in– the other out, or plan to hail Mary the two weeks tomorrow… you’ll need to look your best… to feel your best… because you’ll probably be at your worst(psychologically) if winds change. The difficulties of having thin-fine sucks. Likewise, finding a great hairstylist is like finding a purple squirrel. With more important and prevailing issues goin’ around, I wanted to address the world of cosmetology on a light note… at least before Donald Trump denounces hair-cuts. Never thought I’d say that guy needed more volume. Todd has been my guy for almost a year. I use the same photo and the deed is quickly done. A small justice being served. If you’re tired of getting your thin-fine hair butchered, and actually need it to be well kept for your job or decency… trust in Todd. Go vogue, or go rogue. My hair is magically back every 2.5−3.5 weeks(a blessing), but is a pain to fight traffic for the trip. So I normally wait it out to the point of no return. Toad is pretty accommodating when I schedule a few hours ahead and usually able to squeeze me in. Some days of the week are tight so don’t wait till last minute. He’s very patient and doesn’t go Picasso on you. I use the same photo every time for a low-maintenance-work appropriate cut. 2 – 3 on sides, blend(he’s good), and simple trim/texturize on top so I can still custom. He takes care of the rest to adjust for head/face shape or if I want some variation. Good, dependable, and very familiar with this type of hair/styling if you have it. Next time someone talks stuff about your hair not being important… they probably have no clue what the feather-cut is going on in your life. Don’t get gender-rolled; call them out on the gaslighting, and stand up for you. Hello Todd. Bye Felicia.

Your average Asian hair salon. This is the only place my boyfriend will get his haircut and he lives in Houston… Lol. He came here during college and just didn’t want to find another salon especially if he comes back to visit me as often as he needs a haircut. Todd is his favorite, he only makes appointments with Todd. I’ve gotten my hair cut here twice now. My first time was to donate my hair and Trisha did a great job cutting the amount needed(she’s done it many times before). The second time I came was over a year later just for a trim and I have no complaints. I come more just to sit and wait for my boyfriend but I don’t mind because they have complementary coffee and water! Plus we always go across the parking lot to get some phở after. Women haircuts are ~$ 22 and like $ 12 for men. Always make an appointment so you don’t have to wait and if you want one of the better stylist.

Tried many places but few can cut my Asian hair as well as my man Johnny. Make sure you schedule ahead of time though — there’s usually a line. Love the place in general — friendly staff.

Typical asian guy with typical asian guy hair. I believe in having a consistent barber that knows my hair fairly well, so I get pretty nervous about getting my hair cut by someone different. This was my first time not only getting my hair cut by Silkcut, but in Austin. Walking in on a Sunday around 2pm, I didn’t have an appointment, but I only had to wait around 10 – 15 minutes. Not bad at all, but I’ll make an appointment next time just in case. The place is very clean and lively. A lot of families with their children there. I got my hair cut by Ty. Questions about my hair were quick and simple(how short? thinning? layering?) and he got to work. The longer he worked, the more comfortable and relaxed I felt. He definitely knows what he’s doing and in the end, he got the job done. Hair looks great! You can tell by the environment that loyalty is highly valued. The barbers talked and laughed with their coworkers as well as the customers. I’ll probably try to get Ty again next time, but I’ll feel comfortable with any of them cutting my hair. $ 12(excluding tip) well spent!

My mom wanted to get her haircut and her usual place was closed so went to the other salon in the plaza. The lady said she can take my mom right away and was seating my mom but the guy(Thuan-middle station on the right) said there was another person before her so she apologize and took the other person instead. We were understanding and waited in the front. A few people walked in afterwards and the same guy that didn’t let the lady take my mom finished his client and took the other walk-in. The lady told him that my mom was next. They started arguing amongst each other about the double standard situation loudly and rudely in front of us that my mom was next, but he continued to seat the next person and worked on them. He did not give my mom the same courtesy that we had given them for the previous person and did not care to rectify the situation. How unprofessional is that?

I’m SO glad that this was better than my last visit to get a hair cut in Chinatown… At my roommate’s recommendation, I tried Silkcut because I needed a cut pretty badly. I was nervous going at the end of the day, worried that they would all be tired and would then half-ass cutting my hair, and they proved me terribly wrong. After waiting for about 10 minutes, Johnny asked me to sit in his chair. He asked me what I wanted, and then got right to work. This guy knew exactly what to do and how to do it! As an Asian male with the typical thin, straight hair, Johnny was aware of the difficulty that it poses and paid extreme care to my hair. It was almost astonishing how he would pay so much attention to just one side of my head, making sure he cut it in such a way that would look good. He also noted that when I came in, my hair looked so bad because it was so thick, and recommended thinning it so it would not only last longer, but would look better by getting some of the excess hair out. At the end of the cut, he asked what I thought, and I felt very comfortable in asking him questions on how my hair looked versus what I thought it should look like, and he was very attentive in addressing my questions and actually showing me what my hair would look like after styling it versus how it looked dry. HOLDUP. I didn’t even mention what the price was! For all the help that Johnny gave me, the hair cut was ONLY $ 12!!! If the price doesn’t sway you, I don’t know what else will. I’m glad to say that I left Silkcut being very satisfied with the work Johnny did, and I’m even more glad that I listened to my roommate and took a risk that I don’t particularly like taking! tl;dr: if you’re an Asian male with Asian hair and are nervous about getting your hair cut in Austin, Silkcuts will take care of you and take care of you well. Go!

I have been going here for 5 years now and counting. When I was a freshman at UT, it was hard to find a decent place near campus. But with my UT id handy I was able to take the Capital Metro bus to Chinatown and found this place. Guy haircuts are an affordable $ 12. Haw(guy’s name pronounced«How») is the person I always go to. Whatever style of hair you want done, he’s able to understand how to achieve that. I’ve had some pretty wacky hair requests and he’s always been patient with me and gives me the look I want. Always set up an appointment here because they do get busy all the time. This is because the stylists there know what they’re doing and they’re good at it. They have many loyal satisfied customers because of this.

I am really picky about my haircut so believe me when I say this, they do a fantastic job. I suggest you call ahead and make an appointment coz this place gets busy especially in the evenings when people go shopping at MT market nearby.

I had just pigged out on a bowl of jigae soup next door at Korean Grill and was feeling full and satisfied. Like I need to stretch out and nap kinda satisfied. I so badly needed a haircut«coz it had been a month for me. I popped into here and was greeted by Johnny. He immediately seated me and asked what I would like done. I started trying to explain my usual tempo of 4 on the side, cut and blend to layer on the top, square the back blah, blah, blah. No gel, no mouse, no spray, leave in only and rinse me out. Half way through he interrupts and says how ’bout I do this, this, this, this and this? Then you’ll be able to do this, that, and that. I got lost dazed and confused, and, said sure, ok. I told him I am a wash and go kinda man. Don’t like the chemicals and use leave in conditioner only. Homeboy cut, snipped, diced, sliced and talk his way around my head for a good 20. I didn’t get the rinse, instead he blowed the hell outta my hair with his big azz dryer(I don’t like – HEAT!) After that, I blinked and MF’r slopped some freakin gel in my shit! Understand there haven’t been chemicals in my hair in 20 years. Yes, steam blew from my nostrils, but I held back. I checked out and paid for my $ 12 haircut(yes that’s right). I approached my truck, looked at my reflection in the window, and the first thing that came to mind was that I freakin’ looked like Elton John! Hell no. Drove my ass to a public lou and rinsed that shit out and dried off with paper towels. I can be white trash when I wanna. No shame here. When I got home I showered and checked my du out really good. Homeboy did a fab ass job for $ 12. I will go back!

I’ve been going here for years to see Todd. He’s amazing and has always done an excellent job. On the rare instances when Todd was away, the other stylists have always done a great job as well.

Great for Asian’s hair! My 4yo, husband and myself were so happy to find a place that can handle our hair. They are very crowded on the weekends. Try to go on weekdays if you can. I brought my son twice on weekday mornings and there was no wait at all. He had his hair cut by different hairdressers for each visit and they were both great!

Never go here. Waited patiently for over 40 minutes while at least 4 other people came in and were called on before me. I ended up walking out and going to Kellys across the parking lot.
