Now you have left our already barren restaurant landscape in Cedar Park even more bereft of fine eating establishments! Oh the humanity!
I’ll miss your Kabocha (Tempura fried Japanese pumpkin) and your succulent Tempura fried Escolar nuggets appetizers. I’ll never forget your abundant voracious vermicelli with it’s crispy stir fried Brussels sprouts. I never got excited about Brussels sprouts until I had them at your place. Your truly heavenly Hong’s Heaven, the pork garlic peppercorn, and the Pad Kra Pow all gone! Not to mention the many many dinner menu entrees that I never had a chance to enjoy. Oh the regrets!
I will remember you Spin! I hope you spin back into my orbit again in some form or fashion so I can finish what we started. :(

This is the story of how Keri B.‘s ROTD saved my life. In search of the perfect restaurant for my graduation lunch, her review of SPIN was ROTD at the perfect time. I was about to give up and say «Forget it, I’m going in my graduation dress and heels to the South 1^st food trailers.» Instead, my family and I dined at SPIN — the food was delicious, and I luckily didn’t have to get five shades darker in the process.
Although I’m not a fan of the location (it’s located in the most unassuming shopping strip for such a great restaurant), everything else about SPIN is perfect. The staff and service we received was out of this world. Our waiter was incredibly nice and recommended various dishes, but wasn’t pushy about it at all. He always made sure we had everything we needed and was really prompt when it came to taking our orders and our food came out in a reasonable time too. Probably the best service I’ve received anywhere in a while.
Among all of the delicious food we ordered, I definitely had my favorites. I’ve ordered larb at other Thai restaurants before, but this was a whole different story. You need to get the Larb Sake appetizer! It was delicious. It’s salmon sashimi dressed in other vegetables with a vinaigrette. As for the entrees, my favorites were the Voracious Vermacelli, Lard Na Mi Krop, and the Pad Kra Pow. These were all delicious. They aren’t your run of the mill curries, pad thai, etc. — no — this is different. They really put a spin (hehe, I love puns) on Thai food and I might actually like it more than Titaya’s. Shhh, don’t tell them.
If you’re going for dinner, just remember that the lunch and dinner menu are very different! I’ve never actually been to dinner there, but I’ve heard great things. SPIN is an Austin gem!

I wanted to love it, and I’ll definitely give it another try but so far it’s «eh, ok» I went for lunch today and was promptly seated. The place is cute and cool but a little dark for my taste with black walls, floors and ceiling. The server greeted me immediately and brought my water promptly upon request. I needed a bit more time to peruse the menu so she brought the soup that goes with lunch entrees… ok, I was contemplating paying the up charge for a salad, but I went along.
The soup was the bleh egg drop version I associate with cheap Chinese food and I promptly pushed it away. Ordered their version of Pad Thai – it’s a staple so I figured it should be a good test. They call it «Hong’s Heaven» and while it was ok, I didn’t cry when I left my to go box in the car to run into the HEB and later forgot about it.
Positives: Nice clean interior; good prices; hefty portion and a lot of chicken and sprouts in my Pad Thai PLUS tofu
Negatives: Seasoning was «meh» and the noodles were pretty dry, server virtually disappeared after I was served. Had to ask for water, ask for the check, etc.
I’ll go back but it may get a second shot only.

At first I was feeling bothered by how freezing cold and windy it was today, but I ended up being thankful for the unseasonably chilly weather after my delicious, spicy, warmmm meal at SPIN.
I’d passed the place, seen the reviews from Cedar Park Unilocalers I trust, and had wanted to try for a while, so it was incredibly fortuitous that my check-​in at Lakeline Mall prompted a friend to text and see if I wanted to meet up across the highway at SPIN for lunch.
I was surprised, given the buzz, that the place looked so unassuming, nestled in a strip mall, around the corner from a Super Target. When we walked in, the first thing that hit me was the smell. Damn, it smelled good in there. The hostess said, «Couldn’t you just eat the air?» Um, yeah, I wanted to. The next thing I noticed was how hip and modern the interior was. This is a place that looks like it should be downtown. But it’s in Cedar Park (or is that just super North Austin?)! Score.
We started with some green tea and fried brussel sprouts. Tea was delish, and you cannot lose with fried brussel sprouts. Crispy, salty, and delicious. Maybe not the healthiest way to eat them, but I’m sure there were still some nutrients in there.
My main was the Voracious Vermicelli, which had fried tofu, a boatload of incredibly flavorful roasted veggies (including more of the delicious sprouts) and a whole lot of perfectly cooked and seasoned vermicelli. For 8 – 10 bucks you get your entrée plus a soup or salad. Both of us got the soup, which was a coconut and lemongrass based delight, and veg friendly (just tofu and veggies in there). It had a delicious kick and was perfect for the weird May weather. I can’t remember the dish my friend had (we had to ask the waitress after for the name of it, because it was her recommendation), but I had a taste of it, and it was delicious. Another kind of noodle — rice, or bean thread, perhaps — sauteed in a delicious sauce, with veggies, tofu, and rice, as well.
For dessert, we shared Coconut Panna Cotta. Dang. When I lived in Italy, I never ate the Panna Cotta because I never really liked it. I’d eat this stuff any day. I think the candied pecans might have been the best part of the dish. It was citrusy and light and the perfect end to a meal.
Apparently dinner is a different experience here, and is pricier (though still delicious, I’ve heard). I would absolutely come back for lunch OR dinner, since they offer not only delicious food, but an attractive place to enjoy it in. It even seems like a great place to come alone — sit at the bar and watch what’s going on in the kitchen.
Service was great to boot, so I really don’t have a single complaint or any reason not to return very soon to this local gem. (And yes, even if you’re downtown, I think it’s worth a venture out of your comfort zone).

Now, I am part-​Thai so take my review part-​seriously, please. Owned by Kuantan, Ek (the Thai chef who trained at Uchiko), Thai, and Alphonso. I met Kuantan (really nice guy) and we had a lovely family style dinner with a few things given to us on the house: Neua Yaang Steak (excellent), Som tum, and Lychee lime ice cream (the bomb).
Jessica was our waitress, an absolute sweetheart.
Let me break down what we ate by entrée…
Rib ping: nicely cooked, meat fell off the bone. Only complaint is you will leave hungry if this is the dish you order because it fails to fill the belly unless you had gastric bypass.
Som tum: traditional Thai papaya salad. Real Thai people have this done with a lot of spice/​chili peppers. I didn’t want to give myself an ulcer so I didn’t eat this dish. Others said it was delish and VERY spicy.
Quail: you will also leave hungry if you order this one. Pretty tasty. I believe it was deep-​fried.
Tom Yum Salmon: where’s the soup? Tom Yum is soup, yo. I didn’t read the menu closely enough. Tom yum paste was used, this is not a soupy entrée.
Belly on Fire: sous vide style but also deep-​fried. Pretty good. Small portion.
Tiger Cry: I honestly don’t remember eating this, I think it’s because there wasn’t any left.
Thai Roasted Chicken: Half Chicken. I could tell this was slow-​cooked. It was very tender and tasty. Loved it. And I’m really NOT a chicken person.
Neua Yaang Steak: the real winner of the dish was the amazing sauce that came with it. I dipped just about EVERYTHING into this sauce. I want this recipe. Entrée was delicious. Thanks for sending it-​props to Ek, the chef. This comes with sticky rice (HAPPY FACE!)
Our mouths were on FIRE by end of meal. Jessica gave us a complementary and complimentary lychee lime ice cream dressed with an apple crisp. This stuff is legal and addictive. The PERFECT ending to the meal. Thanks again.
I hope these guys succeed. It is a Thai/​Asian Fusion restaurant. A lot of love goes into the food. Do them a favor and keep them in business, if you can afford it. It’s good stuff.

Although located deep in the hinterlands near Lakeline Mall and harder to find than a flattering picture of LiLo these days, it’s worth checking out at least once. I went there with my friend A on a friend date, and we ordered up a TON of food. I thought I was going to explode from eating too much. First of all, we started off with a housemade sausage fried in duck fat and drizzled with some kind of sweet chili sauce. Tasty.
Next, we had the Tiger Cry, which was char-​grilled beef sirloin, lime juice, grape tomato, sliced mint and red radishes, nam pla chili emulsion and sprinkled with crushed toasted rice. This dish wasn’t really spicy at all, but it was my favorite. The lime just really brought out the flavors of the beef and all the other elements on the dish. We had also ordered a soup (I don’t remember the name of it!) which turned out to be so spicy we were both crying. It had mackerel in it as well as copious amounts of chili, so watch out for that one.
Moving on to the full plates, we had the Clay Pot Shrimp, which comprised of: head on shrimp, glass noodles, Shiitake mushrooms, green onions, Asian celery, cracked black pepper, smoked bacon and topped with an egg, cilantro and green onion. MmmmMMM! Lip-​smacking deliciousness. I could’ve done without the egg; I’m not a huge egg fan, but my friend definitely enjoyed it. I loved the chewy shiitake ‘shrooms and those tasty glass noodles! The bacon gave the whole dish a rich, meaty flavor.
We rounded out our feast with the Saba Mi Krop, which was smoked Norwegian Mackerel which is char-​grilled and topped with pickle Serrano, ginger garlic paste and Thai chili and black soy over crispy egg noodles. I think this was the point where we were both like, OMG we’re so full, we can’t eat another bite. But we managed to destroy most of that mackerel, a testament to either our gluttony or the skills of the chef.
In summary, my favorite dishes were the Tiger Cry and the Clay Pot Shrimp. I’m getting hungry thinking about them right now, in fact…

I wonder if somtimes I should keep from reading Unilocal reviews and drooling over photos of menu items before stopping in for my first try because all that ultimately does is build up a LOT of expectations; especially when lots of those stellar reviews come from friends you know.
I went in expecting to have my mind blown. It was not. I went in expecting to order the Larb Sake. I could not. Maybe it’s a seasonal item, I don’t know; but it sure wasn’t on the menu that night. There were several recommendations for the corn and taro tempura app, it was mostly tempura and I needed to use the dipping sauce from Moni O’s pumpkin tempura app to get any flavor out of it at all. Both were pretty greasy. :-/​As was my entrée, the Panang Fettucine. Let’s just say they aren’t kidding when they say ‘buttered fettucine.’ I should have known better. But I cannot forgive the many pieces of fatty beef served up with those noodles. That’s a kitchen mistake that just shouldn’t happen.
KK’s Belly on Fire was probably my favorite item of the night, coming in a close second was the shitake mushroom I picked out of Dej’s Tom Yum Salmon. And if someone offered to buy me the Coconut Panna Cotta, I would definitely be there again for that.
Maybe it was the overly high expectations, maybe it was the really slow service, maybe it was the look on the waitress’s face when someone asked if anything on the menu came close to a Massaman Curry (i.e. complete bewilderment), but in all honesty three stars is pushing it for this experience.

If you don’t already know Spin is the new trendy place in the Northwest! I like it, one because the food is really good but also we in this area have very little to rave about. Now don’t get me wrong I am not knocking the other local establishment, it’s just we are pretty land locked with chain restaurants, we have something that might get the centrally located people a reason to drive to this side of town.
My evening started with the Moo Sab char-​grilled pork neatly arrange on the plate with cucumber salad and a dipping sauce. The meat was tender and went perfectly with the spicy sauce. (on a side note this is a very Adkins friendly dish)
I normally get the Thai tea but this time I decided to try the tamarind lime mimosa. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it but I really did. It wasn’t tart like I feared it would be, but at the same time it wasn’t over sweet.
Next I tried the clay pot Shrimp. It came it a hot pot and once opened my wait staff added an egg and mixed it right at the table. That is when the aroma hits you and you know you are in for a treat. The shrimp was really tasty and not over cooked, the glass noodles seemed to soak up the great sauce and the mushrooms and celery really complemented the dish. I noticed a little bacon in this dish but it was used as more of a flavoring. This is my new favorite dish. I wanted to try dessert but I think I will save that for next time.

The moment I entered Spin, I felt my heart meld with a Thailand Tiger. A huge, desperate hunger ensued and I wanted to rip the tiny hostess’s head off and eat her brains.
Spin was packed and we were there early for our reservations. I stalked and paced and growled. We were quickly seated at our designated time with our friends who had found something on the drink menu along with Hubs, who ordered a Sake bomb! (Um, hey, I’M the one having the fantasy, dude!)
The Sweet Corn Taro Tempura, a crispy fried corn and taro fritter served with a sweet chili vinaigrette was crunchy and delicious. The Spin Sauteed Sausage, another starter of pork sausage sauteed in duck fat with curry and onions only served to whet this hungry tiger’s appetite.
Service was slightly bumpy and I think it was because the young lady delivering plates of food was rushed and perhaps new at the task. We were give an yummy plate of Moo Sab that no one ordered. It took awhile to remedy the problem and we were told to simply enjoy it on the house. Roar!!! It was tender, savory and the the roasted chili herb dipping sauce got all over my paws. It reminded me of the fat, juicy jungle pigs I’ve consumed in the past.
When my plate of beef arrived, I smacked my lips, licked my whiskers and devoured it. The plate of Tiger Cry, thinly sliced char grilled sirloin, radishes, cilantro and jalapenos (whoops! Was the kitchen out of jalapenos?), was unique and juicy. I know the jalapenos would have kicked it up a notch and was disappointed they were forgotten.
Hubby and I shared a dessert of Coconut Panna Cotta that made me purr. What a lovely concoction created with coconut milk, ginger, candied pecans, preserved lemon rind, mint and caramel. A dish fit for the King of the Jungle.

Dinner party with Unilocalers? Yes, please!
Keri B. invited several of us to «her» restaurant (if anyone else is the Dutchess, there are problems ahoy) on a chilly Saturday night. It’s been a long time since this has happened, but every single bite was DELICIOUS! I can’t believe that interesting, fresh «Asian» food is coming out of a kitchen that shares a side wall with a SuperTarget.
Hits of the night: Tiger Cry Beef (so tender, go click on Keri’s 18 photos of this dish), grilled escolar white fish, and glaaaaazed ribs. I’ve been on a low-​sugar diet lately and I was ready to suck each and every one of those bones dry. Mmmmm.
The appetizers are all fried, but worth ordering. We’re really looking forward to coming back and ordering «the full spin.» Our waitress wouldn’t let us have the candied bacon without ordering that dinner (fair enough, it’s made to order and they might run out.) And run out, they did! By the end of our meal, most of the pork dishes had made their way to the dining room. But everyone looked and sounded happy, so we gladly tried other options.
These folks know how to make spicy dishes, but don’t be afraid. My Tiger didn’t make me cry too much (on request), but I knew to avoid the wicked chili oil hiding under the papaya salad.
Unilocal stars check: pleasant waitress, good options at all meal points, fancy prices that don’t hurt TOO much for a nice meal, and things I want to order next time. Win!

Well, well, well, while some places might start to get a big head and slack off a little Spin just keeps getting better.
After another amazing night of delicious food and great service (Jessica I heart you), I’m back on Unilocal blathering about ya’ll OR as we say in my native tongue, «you guys».
The guys & gals at Spin know the secret to success. A great product coupled with excellent customer service. That is what they do here and they do it well.
Enough said!

My software engineer lover and I ended up in extreme north austin the other night and he mentioned we try Spin for dinner.
I’m normally not a big fan of thai food; I find that frequently there’s too much of the sweet and the coconutty on my plate. This was not the case with what we had at Spin. We shared a spicy salmon entrée with brussels sprouts, and the veggie puc, which is bean curd with beets and some other veggies. I loved the salmon, but the veggie puc seemed very strange to me; there was a lot going on in it, and i’m not sure how well it was working as a whole. The portions were a good size, however, I wish rice had been included with the salmon dish, to work with the sauce in the bottom of the bowl. and i liked that the sauce tasted like they made it, not like it came from a bottle or can.
On the drinks side, I had a thai iced tea, followed with a cucumber sake, which was tasty. my lover had an asian beer.
I noticed that most of the dishes on the menu were very meat-​centric, and/​or involved tempura or other acts of frying. it appeared as though the veggie puc was the only veggie entrée option. i prefer to have more veggies with my food, and assumed that a thai place would have more of the chicken/​beef/​veggie/​tofu option for entrees. i wouldn’t mind going back if i was in the mood for a meat-​based meal. next time i’ll ask for rice too.

The wife and dined here on New Years Eve. First, I was thankful there was no NYE upcharge. No seven course menu for $ 195 a person; Spin gave us a free appetizer just for showing up! I did have some trouble finding the place, but after the initial drive thru the Home Depot parking lot back to the previous shopping strip it was smooth sailing.
We selected the Sweet Corn Taro Tempura for our free app. We also chose the Popcorn Escolar and Moo Ping to have a bit of variety. Sauces that accompanied each dish were stellar, no killer! Every bite out of the fryer was perfectly cooked. The grilled pork on the satay was skirted with subtle bits of fat; paired with the spiciest sauce of the three apps. How do you say bravo in Thai?
I selected the Belly on Fire while the wife chose the Clay Pot Shrimp. I know we’re talking elevated cuisine, but I could have used a bit more sauce on the pork belly. Greens were great and the sauce again was perfect, just a bit more than adorning the meat with a dabble. The wife liked her shrimp. She asked that I mention the amount of peppercorns in the dish; she thought there should be less as it overwhelmed the dish.
Overall, an above average dining experience. A minor complaint that once we were done with our three appetizers it took the kitchen almost 30 minutes to produce our entrees. While I appreciate that our entrees didn’t arrive on top of our first course (s), it was a bit of a wait especially when the dining room was only half full. Price wise it was a total win; dining out with tip even on NYE for $ 60. Now, chef/​owners at Spin… Bring one South!

Really wavering between a 3.5 and a 4. Overall the dishes were very unique and tasty. The main negatives to SPIN is of course the location. Now, I grew up in NW Austin, so I’m not hating on the location. But, it really is far and not worth the drive just to eat at this restaurant.
My only other complaint is that the flavoring is just a tad too much. I think if they backed off on the sauces a little, the dishes would be delicate and perfect!

Really, I don’t want to get annoying with this, but I love this place like a fat kid loves ca… no, more… like Errol loves Barley Swine. And every time we go, there are new menu options to discover and now they offer more wine choices and SAKE! (and sake bombs :)
This last Tues nite trip (after a particularly sucky day at work), we were greeted warmly by our waitress and her sister who was training, and as the restaurant was slow that nite, they really kept us in warm company all thru the meal. This time around, we reveled in the salmon tataki dish made with seared smoked salmon, pineapple and cruncy shallots, and also got to try the Moo Sab (pork skirt with a spicy chile dipping sauce). For our dinners, hubby got and finished a half roasted chicken. Even the chef came out to congratulate him on eating it all as it had been an especially big chicken delivered that morning. Yes, I helped him eat it because it came with a sweet chile sauce that made my tastebuds sing and my toes curl. I ordered the Saba Mi Krob which was a grilled mackerel covered in a tangy ginger sauce with peppers and sitting on top of crunchy egg noodles in an almost sweet soy sauce. Somehow they managed to make that fish, usually a very oily and fishy fish, taste succulent and mild.
I can never get over how creative these chefs are (and srsly, have you seen any food more photogenic??) and how each dish has so many layers of flavor for your mouth to interpret. Kinda like a food version of Girl Talk, trying to decipher each song he samples. The staff has always been so sweet to us, the chef always asking our opinion of his new dishes kind of makes us feel VIP. And now they are experimenting with sake as well and this time had a house infused cucumber version that was so smooth and refreshing.
It doesn’t matter if we go once a week or not for two months, we are always so pleasantly surprised by the creativity of the meal and the welcome by the staff. Halfway thru the meal, my day melted away and I was a happy girl again. It’s our new Cheers!

Spin Modern Thai is the most interesting upscale restaurant in the most unexpected location, a strip mall anchored by Target.
Desconstructed and completely fusion. I am a fan of how they spin Thai cuisine. It has a hint of Thai, but clearly not Thai. The menu is small and the portions are small, so you can have an appetizer and entrée without feeling overly stuffed.
They are generous with Thai peppers so if you can’t handle the heat, tell them. The restaurant is very accommodating. Our son is allergic to peanuts so when we go, they modify his food so he doesn’t go into anaphylactic shock. The food is fresh. The Tiger Cry, doesn’t make me tear up, but there is a kick. The best dish here is definitely the larb sake. You must get it if you like raw fish!
I’ve had just about everything on the small menu. Everything is flavorful, creative, and fresh; however, most things were a bit too sweet for me. The food would be superb if they can tone down the sweetness. Also, perhaps a few good adult cocktails would round out their menu. I usually order beer, but decided on the tamarind cocktail last time I visited. The cocktail was way, way too sweet.

If you like what Uchi/​Uchiko is doing with typical sushi fare, then you’ll like what Spin is doing with typical Thai. I’m not talking about slathering aioli over an asparagus spear sushi roll and calling it «Your Momma’s Spent Dragon» or some nonsense like that, I’m talking about reinventing the wheel.
I’m simply fascinated when a creative chef and kitchen do things I’ve never seen done before, and the «Spin» here is deconstructing every Thai dish you’ve ever had, and presenting its components in artistic small-​plate format. Each dish this place makes really begs to be shared with someone, and an easy way to think of Spin Modern is to imagine Barley Swine doing Asian, not Titaya’s doing steroids.
Surprisingly, there’s a dearth of vegan/​veghead choices on either the lunch or dinner menu, although my instinct is this particular place would work out something for you if you ask. I could be wrong. I was actually going to town with the sweet corn tempura app over rice, probably because I was already high off the sugar and dairy from the Thai Tea. Yeah, well, stuff happens. There were twenty-​one of us here on a Thursday night, they gave us half the entire restaurant space, and the three servers working with us got a genuine workout and handled us well.
I’ve used this line before but it fits perfectly here: If this place was in downtown Austin with crappy parking and a no-​reservation policy, hipsters would be all over it like white on rice. I’m just not sure if Spin’s location way up Northwest Austin in that Super Target complex by Lakeline Mall will ultimately be an asset or detriment. Even my GPS was confused momentarily — «You want to go where?» And I really hope it works out for them. Spin Modern Thai is one of those hidden Austin gems that you want everyone to know about, so they can come out here and play.

Spin is minimally decorated with a warm color scheme of blues and brown and dimly lit with candles on each table accompanied by flowers.
There is an eight top bar facing the open portion of the kitchen, this is definitely where I will dine on my next visit! There are also 2 top and 4 top tables as well as long booth against the back wall with tables.
The hostess seemed to know the menu well and made some suggestions. I looked over the menu and everything was screaming order me! Pork belly pineapple, larb sake, tiger cry but I went with what looked like perhaps the lightest dish of shrimp, scallops with Brussels sprouts and oyster sauce.
The dish was tapa size meant for sharing and plated beautifully. The seafood was fresh, the Brussels sprouts were lightly sauteed and the sauce had a nice warmth. Scallops to often come out rubbery and overcooked but theirs were perfect. It also comes with rice but I declined.
After devouring the first dish, feeling plenty full I hear «runner up» chime from the kitchen. Soon a scrumptious plate of larb sake was sitting in front of me compliments of the chef! Perfect bite size pieces of salmon sashimi tossed in a nampla lemon grass vinaigrette with heirloom tomatoes, cilantro and a few small thin slices of pepper. This dish was absolutely perfect in every way.
They serve 8 beers by the bottle ranging from $ 3 – 4 to include Fireman’s 4, Chang and Singha. They also have 8 wines by the glass or bottle. Wines by the glass run $ 6 – 8.
If the quality of dishes are always this wonderful, I have hands down found my favorite restaurant in Cedar Park (it is in North Austin but literally across the street is Cedar Park).
The chefs were super friendly and I thanked them on the way out for the wonderful dishes. Their smiling faces and delicious food make it evident they take great pride in what they are doing.
*The one thing that may hurt this place is lack of professionalism when it comes to service. I could hear everything the three employees at the cash register were saying and most of it was unkind. If I let it, this would have actually ruined the entire dining experience.
