A lot of these reviews are from a while ago so they must have gotten a whole new staff. Only one lady seems to know what’s going on and the rest of them definitely need to be trained more in working the register and knowing what the subway promotions are. There is usually someone smoking out front and I can hear all of their conversations while I’m eating that are sometimes inappropriate and include cursing. Not impressed by this location.

I just returned from Las Vegas. Glad to be back in Austin. But if I need a reminder dose of cigarette smoke I need only walk past the front of this Subway where employees loiter and smoke on a daily basis. I pick my mail up next door at Westlake Mail, so I’m literally there every day, sometimes twice a day. The high instance of Subway employee-smokers is astonishing. I never eat at this Subway anymore, ever,(though I do love Subways in general), because I can’t stand the idea of those smoker fingers, gloves notwithstanding, making my sammich. Disgusting. Management cannot be unaware. Heck, maybe one of the smokers IS the manager for all I know. But it’s gross to see these slacker drones outside puffing on smokes. I can’t think of a better way to turn away a prospective patron, especially when there are other good choices just steps away, such as Texas Honey Ham(where I always go now) and the Chinese joint. Seriously, who wants to walk past a uniformed smoker into an establishment, then have that same smoker rush back in to take the order. This is dumber than dumb. If you Subway emps must smoke(as I’m sure many food service people do) conceal yourself. There is a back door. Go to the rear of the building which the public doesn’t ever see or even know about. Go back there for your smoke breaks and quit stinking up the sidewalk in front and embarrassing yourself and your brand. And remember to wash and sanitize your hands afterward.

This Subway is awesome. The employees are friendly. The blonde woman in the morning is extra awesome. Her cheeriness infects the customers. This Subway is also amazingly fast – it is like a Chipotle. If you see a long line when you walk in, take heart because that line moves fast. The food is consistent with other Subways – acceptably tasty but not I-want-to-lick-my-plate-clean tasty. They serve personal pizzas, soup, salad, and submarine sandwiches at really cheap prices. As long as I am out here, this Subway will be my coffee and lunch place. The bad parking lot and long walk to the restroom won’t deter me. I hate the parking lot because people heading east on Bee Caves or straight onto Westbank have to wait a long time at the light, the driveways are narrow, cars are often blocked, and at peak times, parking spots are scarce. The restroom is shared with the other stores in the shopping center but it is very clean.

This Subway has some super cool deals apparently that I knew nothing about until I wandered in looking to save a friend from starvation who was adamant(thankfully) that Popeye’s wouldn’t be an option and located in the same parking lot. There is something to be said about patience and the person working had a ton of it. I try to be respectful of cell phone usage when in places where I am required to interact with people. However, the *deals* on Saturday were certain 6inches were only $ 1.99 so I called my friend, I text my friend, I called my friend, no answer. All the while the place was thankfully empty pre-lunch rush and she patiently waited. I finally just ordered without confirmation because I didn’t want to continue to be that rude person that I also get annoyed with. Sandwiches were good, bread was super fresh, and naturally the service was stella/patient customer service!

While I’m sure I’ll get some heckling and blatant disgust for this review, it must be done. I am a die-hard Subway fan and I have been all my life. I can’t explain it… I’m very discriminatory when it comes to food, but it’s something about the bread, the many options, the prices, the dressings… I don’t know. I have met people who share this love(be it openly or secretly), and I have met people who hate the restaurant with a passion. I urge both of these groups to try the Subway on Bee Caves Rd. in Westlake. You will not be disappointed. I go most every day to this location on my lunch break because it’s in close proximity to my job. Like you, I’ve been to some horrible Subways. My mother’s nickname for the restaurant, «Cardboard Way» is true at many locations. But this is where Westlake Subway defies what we all expect from a Subway franchise. The staff there — Julian, Janie, Dawn, Tan Ho(sp?) and all the others — are amazing. It’s a high traffic location, and many Westlakers stop in for a cheap, quick and filling lunch. Here’s what makes this store exceptional: 1) On many days, the line is out the door. Julian and his crew can get through a line of 20 people in about 5 minutes. I do not exaggerate. 2) The vegetables are always, always fresh and they are never out of anything. The tomatoes are almost always ripe and most of the veggie choices would rival any restaurant in Austin on freshness and taste. 3) You can get a sub, chips, cookies and a drink for under $ 6. Each day of the week you can get a different«special» for $ 3.99, which includes a 6″ sandwich, your choice of chips or cookies, and a drink. Where can you get that much food for under $ 5 and actually WATCH it being prepared? 4) Where most Subways have started to charge .50 for soda refills, .50 for extra cheese slices, and are only allowed to give 1 napkin per bag, in Westlake you can refill your soda as many times as you please and they even set out extra napkins(recycled paper towels) next to the drink dispenser for people to take as needed. Additionally, they do not spend five minutes trying to separate the cheese slices because they are afraid of food costs and the franchise owner. 5) Their clientele ranges from upper-class moms with 3&4-yr.-old screamers to groups of Latino or Mexican men coming in on their lunch break. The staff is bilingual, and routinely shifts from English to Spanish based on their customer. 6) They bake(not from scratch, of course) their bread and cookies daily. 7)They have pizza! Which people actually buy! And there’s a variety of veggie and meat toppings right in front of you for $ 4.49. 7) They will call you by name and remember your order. Here is a place that qualifies as both fast food and a chain, but also qualifies as good, fresh, quick and economical. The taste buds say… Lick your plate clean.
