Texan Eye

Went to Texan Eye off Mopac (By Intel) for a full eye exam (including dilation) for a work mandate. Had to wait for about 1.5 weeks to get an appointment (which I guess is okay). The appointment went very well. They explained everything well and we were in and out fast. Not sure why there are all the negative reviews. No issues or whatsoever for me!

If you are looking for good customer/​patient service, DO NOT go the the Texan Eye Center at 1700 S. Mopac. I have never been treated like this in a doctor’s office. I went in for the first time for an annual eye exam and that seemed okay other than the doctor did not provide me with a prescription. I then called their office 3 times and was promised all three times that I would get a return call the following day. Then when I couldn’t get a response about being provided a copy of my prescription, I went into the office, told them my phone experience and finally was given a prescription. What I still don’t understand is how the doctor provided a prescription when he was unable to accurately exam my left eye. When I asked for an explanation, the doctor finally called a week later and left a message saying that he would call me back at some point in the future. I’m still waiting.

It was recommended to me to have cataract surgery and was referred to Texan Eyes. My appointment was with Dr. Walters. Through my process to have the surgery. I was treated very rudely. The doctor did the surgery on my right eye First. I didn’t notice any change to my vision. Went in to do have my left eye done and asked Dr. Walters what type of lens he was going to use. His response was «what kind». I said what was the name of the lens. His reply was «if you want a name, call it Henry». He knew what I was asking. Through the months after surgery I kept complaining I could not see good. I had multiple prescriptions to improve my vision. But none of them helped. The last time I was in the office, which felt was every week, Dr. Walters held up 2 fingers and ask me «could I see that?» I said yes, then he held up his whole hand and asked if I could see that, I said yes. He answered «well, your not blind are you». Please take my advice and DO NOT GO IN THAT CLINIC NOR SEE DR. WALTER’S. He is the worst, the most rude and not a good doctor. As of today, 13 or 14 months after the surgery, I still can not see well. I was able to drive at night before the surgery, but can not drive at night. After all this time and many specialists and over 10 new prescriptions, I still see worse now than before the surgery. I would like to give them a minus 10 star but am not able too.

I have read SO many negative reviews and they are just not true– I have terrible vision and am very familiar with ophthalmologists — Dr. Sargent (sorry if incorrectly spelled) was AMAZING, the front desk were very nice and practically no waiting on the Dr. Highly recommend !!!

Absolutely horrified with the Customer Service at this establishment. I do not support companies that allow their staff to curse and make derogatory slurs toward special populations. The lack of follow-​through when addressing an issue with this company is abhorrent, and I hope at the very least, they put their staff through sensitivity training and truly evaluate how inclusive they are to the ATX community.

This place is the worst. The receptionist is so snarky. She repremanded me for putting the pen in the wrong holder when I returned it with the completed form. I should have just kept it. While I was waiting, I checked Unilocal and sure enough, bad service comments. So I called Stars in Your Eyes and got an appointment for next week. They dont’t take my Insurance, but I’d rather pay fot an eye exam out-​of-​pocket that give it to Texan Eye.

My husband has received excellent service with Texan Eye and we found them through Blue Cross/​Blue Shield Texas. Dr. Walters was very thorough. My husband has had one cataract treated and now onto the second one. Agreed, their customer service is a little slap dash, and you do feel like a bit of a number, but the doctors are good. I saw another recommended ophthalmologist in Austin and I was not impressed. We are sticking with Texan Eye for surgery. P. S. They could really use something more humanizing in the waiting room like a coffee machine.

This place suuuucks. I should have read the reviews before going here. Everyone talks about the shitty customer service, but it’s more than that. It’s a total lack of any give-​a-​shit for their patients. This place is a disgrace to the medical profession. Trust the health of your eyes in the care of competent professionals. These people are not them.

My wife and I have used TexanEye for 20 years or more. We have had annual check ups every year and have been pleased with the service and care given by Dr. Tom Walters and the staff. We have found that he is very concerned about our eye health over the years. I had cataract surgery last year and the results have been great. My wife had an issue with one retina that was discovered about three years ago and the follow-​ups have been timely and consistent. While others have felt that the waiting room time was excessive, I would say that it is pretty typical for doctors offices in Austin. No one likes to wait, but I have never felt that it was an excessive amount of time. We will gladly continue to use Dr Walters and his staff to maintain our eye health.

No complaints here at all. Was easy to get an appointment, I was in and out quickly. And I love the groovy glasses I now sport.

I’ve had my eyes taken care of by the wonderful people at Texan Eye Care for close to 25 years. My primary ophthalmologist has been Dr. Tom Walters, who in the beginning saw me for my annual check-​ups, later through years of wearing contacts, and then, to eventually having cataract surgery. His knowledge, skill and kindness through all these years has helped me to understand each step as we went along, and I have always appreciated his expert advice and care. At times, when I needed to come in due to an eye infection, one of the other doctors has always been able to see me right away, and these drs., including Dr. Robin Watson, were always extremely helpful as well. The entire staff is to be commended for their ability to do their jobs in a kind and professional manner, starting with the moment I sign in. To all of them… thank you!

I have never had a worse experience at an eye doctor. I went in for an annual check up so that I can reorder my contacts. I don’t have any serious issues with my eyes other than just not being able to see at far distances. Of the 5 doctors/​assistants/​admin people I interacted with, only 2 were actually kind and welcoming. To top it off, my bill was $ 350!!! And that was not including purchasing my contacts! I don’t have insurance, however I have never spent more than $ 150 at an eye doctor in the past 15 years. You will NEVER have my business again. Absolutely outrageous.

I am an existing patient and have called three times today in order to obtain a prescription. Or at least an answer as to whether or not they will provide a prescription. Every time I call, I get a different person who has no idea what I’m talking about. The third person sarcastically laughed at me and told me I was not likely to get what I need. Totally unprofessional!

I would give a negative star if possible! First Unilocal review ever for me… I read them and generally agree.
Dr. Douglas E. Lewis is Absolutely the most condescending, rude, obnoxious doctor I’ve ever had the displeasure of being around! Oh and the incorrect diagnosis is just a bonus! the Unilocal reviews pretty much sum this office up,
I will never go back, and will tell everyone my experience, Stop giving this office business, it’s clear they don’t value or respect their clients. If you’re not getting LASIK, you’re made to feel that your are wasting their time by being there. To top my experience off, we arrived at 3:30 for an appointment, waited a long time in the waiting room which was almost empty, walked to the check out counter at 5:06. They had already locked the doors, made a extra loud voice announcement that of «here are the last ones»!! And then the female selling frames said in front of us…“I don’t mind staying late for people if they buy 2 pairs of frames” IT WAS 5:06! The check out girl was less than friendly, the only nice employee encounter was the guy who walked me back to the exam room. Dr Lewis needs to rethink his condescending attitude, what a jerk… Find another doctor!

Unfortunately, Unilocal only allows you to go to 1 star and no lower. I’d rate it lower, if possible.
When I moved to Austin, I didn’t have an eye doctor, so I picked Texan Eye. I wish I hadn’t. They are extremely inefficient and unorganized. You could plan on being there for an entire day just for an annual exam, due to the fact that the receptionists were never organized. They were more interested in talking to each other than helping the patients check in.
It always felt dirty in their building. It never appeared that anything was cleaned and the waiting room was dingy and dark.
The final straw, though, was when I had a bad scratch on my cornea last year. I was in an incredible amount of pain and was very sensitive to light. I couldn’t open my eye. I called to get an appointment — letting them know that this was an emergency situation. I was told that they couldn’t get me in for about 3 months — and that was iffy. I reiterated that this wasn’t a check up — that I had an eye emergency. Didn’t matter to them.
Today, I switched all my records to Mann Eye. And I LOVE it! Clean and efficient. The people there seem to really care that I’m a patient. And, when I told them about my experience with the scratched cornea, they were appalled. They said that would NEVER have happened with them; I would have been seen immediately. Another interesting thing I found out is that the majority of their staff came to them from Texan Eye, because they didn’t feel Texan Eye was a reputable practice. That says a lot to me.
I would absolutely not recommend Texan Eye. And I’ve told friends and family to stay away from them. I sure as heck would never go there for any type of surgery or medical procedure. I’d be terrified of what would happen to my eyesight if they did anything other than a basic eye exam.

Went to Texan Eye Care and saw a dr Nieman. Honestly I have never been to a Doctor that is as arrogant and condescending as she is. I «dared» ask a few questions and she cut me off. She books patients every 15 minutes so after the first set of exams she runs off to another patient and then comes back to you. I was never asked how I felt, what I should do in the future or any sign of human connection. It is really sad that when we are at our most vulnerable, a doctor, of all things, cannot find a moment of genuine caring.

Today I had an appointment at Texan Eye on S. MoPac. I arrived on time and then waited in the outer waiting room for 15 minutes. Ok. Then I was called back to the little room and talked with a technician briefly. Then, she lowered the lights and left. I sat there for a full hour! No one ever stopped by to inform me why the wait. Lots of staff in the hallway and the reception area, but no doctor.
After an hour in the little room, I reported to the receptionist that I was leaving. No offer of apology was offered. No explanation.
I think the doctors at Texan Eye are competent and friendly. Wish I could have seen one.
I’ll find another opthomologist.

The problem at Texan Eye isn’t that any one person is bad (staff, doctors, nurses, receptionists), it’s just that you get the feeling that no one is steering the ship. They have two (or three?) different locations with different staff at each who clearly are not communicating.
I had cataract surgery and you do very much get the feeling that they’re cranking you in and out as quickly as possible. That, in itself, is fine. What doesn’t make any sense is how a business that is clearly VERY busy and (I’m guessing) VERY profitable doesn’t have it together on the administrative side.
For a practice to be as busy as they are, you’d think it would run really efficiently and like a well-​oiled machine.
It doesn’t.
At all.
Long wait times, confusion between appointments, billing and the doctors and you start to get the feeling that the left hand has ZERO idea what the right hand is doing.
Everyone I dealt with was VERY nice except for maybe the doctors, who seem a little cold and in a hurry. That doesn’t really bother me.
So, my complaint isn’t with the staff it’s just with the lack of organization which seems INSANE for a company who is so busy.
My cataracts are gone and I can see now, and that’s great. I’d just hope that after writing $ 5000 worth of checks to this place that maybe some of that money will go to hiring a consultant who can help them get their shit together.

Abysmal customer service, and treatment that is just this side of incompetent. The receptionists are rude and unhelpful, not to mention seemingly ignorant of even the basics of medical terminology or language skills above the fourth grade level. When words like «retinal» and «cornea» stump a receptionist at an ophthalmologist’s office, something is wrong. The doctor I managed to get stuck with has made my situation degenerate steadily with every intervention. Even the specialist I saw was not extremely helpful. When an emergency condition presented itself, the receptionist was willing to make an appointment for me two weeks from now. I think I’ll take my eyes and my money somewhere else.

Don’t know why you even bother making an appointment. Waits times are an hour plus!!! The wait room is packed, they probably overbook on purpose. Don’t bother.

I’ve been using this place for over five years but after calling last week to make an appointment I’m not going to continue with them. The receptionist was blunt and totally unfriendly. It’s a shame as they are right next door to my office and even with dilated pupils i can crawl back through the bushes to get to my office. I will say that the ladies who helped me choose and fit my glasses have been very nice, but i cannot get over the receptionist.

Ok, they’ve lost their only cheerleader in this game. As you can see from my previous review, I had no real issue with them. Despite other’s many complaints, I found it to be acceptable and worth my patronage.
Now, it’s over. I’m done. After 7 + years of visiting this location, I’ve realized the last drop in that bucket: Customer service, mainly them standing by their work. They don’t. And they don’t care either. That’s the drop. One thing to tell me they won’t do the correction I’m asking for (one of the lenses isn’t shaped right to fit the frame, and that lens pops out, increasingly so since I’ve had them made). But it’s a whole other bag of worms when insinuations are made that I’m lying. (even though nothing directly was said, the statement was made by one of the glasses tech’s that I had brought in two other frames in the past year that I hadn’t purchased at Texan Eye), which BTW has nothing to do with poor workmanship.
Clearly some fashion of a bottom line is of far more concern to them than any individual customer. Oh well, due to Unilocal’s wonderful reviews I’ve already found my replacement. Oh and they have 5 STARS! Something Texan Eye knows nothing about apparently.
