Specialties
The Hideout is a theater in the heart of downtown Austin that specializes in improv comedy and theatre. Improv is completely unscripted and made up in the moment.
We have shows Thursday through Sunday, and they run the gamut from Improvised Shakespeare, to improvised news shows to Whose-Line-Is-It-Anyway style game shows, to kids shows on Sunday.
The one thing all these shows have in common is that they’re a great, fun way to spend an evening.
We also teach improv classes for those looking to perform, or just to build up their own communication skills and confidence.
The Hideout is the longest running improv theater in Austin. We love this city, and we want to help you love it just as much. Come share a laugh and a unique experience with us.
History
Established in 1999.
The Hideout was founded in 1999 when Austin Theatresports needed a home. Sean Hill, the original owner, took on the risky project of building a theater in a space that long been a run-down pawn.
Completely gutting and reconstructing the interior, 617 Congress was turned into the playground of the imagination that it is today.
For 10 years The Hideout sailed under his direction, bring Austin its most popular improv show, Maestro, and training generations of performers and comedians.
In May of 2010 the Hideout was passed to some of those former students: Jessica, Roy and Kareem. Under new management and new energy, The Hideout has begun phase 2: embarking on new shows, adding new classes, changing its look, and doing whatever it takes to give downtown Austin a good time.
