The Number Lab serves both elementary and middle school students and educators with a mathematics experience that builds deep understanding of mathematical ideas, a positive identity, and strong number reasoning skills, while constantly leaning on practices that promote growth of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. The Number Lab offers children an opportunity to experience learning mathematics in a very innovative, highly engaging and cognitively demanding environment while providing educators with a lab-based professional development model that aims to shift traditional perspectives concerning mathematics teaching and learning.
History
Established in 2014.
The Number Lab was created in 2014 by a group of math educators who were passionate about improving the quality of math instruction in elementary and middle schools. For 20+ years, this trio studied research and best practices in math education and developed and implemented a highly successful approach to delivering concept-rich mathematics instruction to young learners. These educators now spend their time sharing their approach with other elementary and middle school mathematics instructors both nationally and internationally, challenging them to «unlearn» the traditional methods of mathematics and «relearn» a more powerful way to think about mathematics through key ideas that transfer from arithmetic to algebra and make learning math more interesting and exciting.
