Wonko’s is a family friendly gaming and collectibles store, focusing on Magic the Gathering, Warhammer, Action figures, Yu-​Gi-​Oh!, Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, Dr. Who, Sideshow, DC, Marvel, Heroscape, Star Trek, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Fantasy Flight, Rio Grande Games, Mayfair Games, Settlers of Catan, Steve Jackson Games, Munchkin, Hordes, Warmachine.

We TEACH the games that we sell, unlike the big box stores, as well as giving our community a place to play those games.

History

Established in 2005.

Opened by Chad Seger in November of 2005, the business changed hands to Eric and Denise down in July 2009. At the time of the change of ownership, Wonko’s was primarily a collectible toy store, specializing in hard to find action figures and statues. The Dow’s reorganized the store to allow for more gaming and shifted the focus to an even mix of Toys and Games, and started a nightly focus on bringing local gamers into the store to play and created a social element to the store.

In November of 2010, Wonko’s moved across the street and into a larger facility to make room for bigger tournaments and a greater selection of both Toys and Games.

In September of 2012 Wonko’s was featured on the Travel Channel’s show Toy Hunters.

Wonko’s has maintained a family friendly atmosphere that focus’s on teaching the games they sell and increasing the hobby of collecting Star Wars, Star Trek and other toys.

Business Owner

Eric began playing games back in the early 80’s and credits his Friendly Local Game Store back in California as being the inspiration for Wonko’s, and though his career took him through just about every aspect of Personal Computing, he wound up back at a FLGS. Eric has set a World Record driving from Prudhoe Bay Alaska to Ushuia Argentina, managed a staff of IT professionals in excess of 200 people, and managed to stay married for 22 years, occasionally even giving some input to the raising of their two daughters.

I visited this store yesterday after calling them to check if they carry the Hot Toys brand of collectible figures.
Pros: Neat store, super friendly and courteous staff. Good selection of some odds and ends. Not into board games myself so not sure what the scene is on that but there were some people last evening and it did look like they were having fun.
Cons: January 20th I was in the store and interested in a certain figure they had on display. Upon checking the price it is $ 150 over MSRP (which is almost 100% profit right there) and almost $ 219 profit since the actual purchase on these is a lot lower than MSRP as I have friends who are volume dealers for Hot Toys. I was offered a 10% discount on January 20th on their store price (yes their store they can make whatever price they want); I left my number and said I will need to sleep on it and come back tomorrow if I am interested.
Thought about the pricing for a bit last night and said to myself what the heck. Its a local business they need to pay for staff, rent etc etc so its ok to pay them what they are asking for after discounts. Well I went to the store this morning at 10AM and waited till 11AM (my fault for not checking they open at 11AM). The staff greeted me and was super courteous (5 stars for that) but did not have the authority to honor the offer that was made to me yesterday. She had to call the store owner who I believe advised the staff to check Amazon third party seller prices and eBay listings (come on is this a retail store or a pawn shop? also its not an indication of the current average selling price). The owner flat out refused to consider the fact that its way overpriced and did not even honor the discount he offered yesterday. I had to respectfully deny and walk out of the store.
Waste of 50 miles driving back and forth twice to be part of the shop local rage. Good luck Wonko’s Toys, I am sure you have bunch of patrons but you just lost a potential future customer who could have brought you at least $ 4000 plus in business every few months.
Next time somebody asks me to support local businesses I will ask them to think twice. I was born in the night but not last night (not my quote but its relevant).

Staff is amazing and very friendly, on my first visit the lady at the counter which I come to believe is the mother of the daughters that also work there and she took the time to look through my cards even when she had binders and cases. Was real patient and I sat down to check and compare prices and a friend of theirs came over and treated me and them to some food from across the street. I had a blast and got to meet alot of people and it felt like ive known them for years, crazy huh? I plan to make a trip up there sometime soon to see how everyone is doing. I managed to sell a majority of all my cards and she showed me so much love and was very fair on pricing recommend for anyone that love magic and comics etc

This place is a nerd paradise. Memorabilia and nerd-​contraband of all sorts. They also have several game nights. The plaza is sadly half un-​tenanted, so I hope a good customer base will keep this location open.

This is a great store all around. There is a wide selection of board games and other collectibles. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There is a huge amount of table space to play games in the store. The owner encourages this and participates regularly. There is plenty of parking and food options in the shopping center. I don’t know what more we could ask for.

Wanted to check this place out for a while now… they’re closed and no information posted on the door to why… hrs of operation are 11 – 9 and we showed up at noon today… very disappointed… looked awesome from peeking in the window with my son

Been coming here for their Wednesday night meetup event.
It’s free gaming with lots of board games available. Great group, excellent venue, lots of fun.
I only wish they had a better vending machine, a coffee/​beverage bar, and more ways for me to support them with $$, even if I’m not buying new games or card sets.

Wonko’s is a great store for buying board games. The staff is friendly and always willing to provide suggestion and guidance. I have been in there several times and would not say I am a regular (because of distance.) The last time I went in they were so helpful in helping me and my daughters (11⁄13) choose a game we decided to stay and play in their new community gaming room. It was a great social experience and my girls keep asking to go back!

If you haven’t been out to Wonko’s recently, check it out. They expanded into the suite next door, and now have tons of gaming space. It’s easier to walk around and check out other games, and all the demo games are now easier to peruse. Like I said, check it out!

Not really a toy store, as much as a collector’s store. Most figures would run you about $ 20, at a minimum. They have some cool vintage toys also. They are big on boardgames, Warhammer, and Magic. There’s some RPG stuff, but that’s not the focus.
There were Magic games going on while we were there – it’s not a huge space, but people seemed to be having fun. It looks like they might expand soon.
The employees were super nice and helpful. My only wish is that these places had more stuff for kids, too, but Wonko’s seems to do what it does very well.

Wonderful store in Cedar Park. Owners are fantastic and the section is good. Not a a old school game place (like chess) but for the magic, netrunner, etc geeks. figurines, models, cards. worth a visit!

Disclaimer: I’m only reviewing the board/​card games here although they have Warhammer, figurines, magic cards, and RPGs. Also, the place is dramatically smaller than Dragon’s Lair and doesn’t have the specialized games and accessories you’ll find at Great Hall, but what it misses in size it makes up for in one very specific area: buying games.
The wide types and varieties of board games now available makes for a sort of golden age of this type of game, but they also tend to overwhelm you with options. This happened to me with comic books years ago. Once I fell out with them initially, it was almost impossible to get back into them without blowing a bunch of money on stuff I don’t like.
With board games, you never know what’s going to resonate with you or what’s going to work with your group. Is it too big, too competitive, too short, too few players, etc. The owner Eric is amazing at this. The times I’ve come by, I’ve been very happy with his advice. He can give you the background, his experiences, and his interest. He can say what’s good about a game and customize it for groups of many sizes. I even had a game that I already purchased that was proving too tedious that he encouraged me to stick with through the initial complexity/​confusion. It’s a big help and the reason I’ll keep coming back.

Really neat little toy store that manages to pack in a great assortment of stuff. Lots of games and collectibles (e.g., figurines). I understand they actually host game nights here. Might be something fun and different to do. Wish I lived closer, but might just make the drive one night to check it out.

Wonderful neighborhood gaming store with really active game nights. The boardgame night gets quite a crowd for a store this size, which is wonderful. The Magic: The Gathering nights are even busier.
They also have a good selection of action figures and a reasonable selection of role playing books in addition to a decent size boardgame lineup.

The entire staff is full of friendly people, and it has an amazingly casual atmosphere. Events are pretty professional, and it feels like a second home. They have a lot of cool stuff that’s pretty unique, and they’re extremely family friendly. I’m a very shy person, but everyone there is friendly enough to help me come out of my shell!~
Highly recommend stopping by at least once, to goof off or to get some nice collectibles. They have nice trading card stuff, too.

While not the largest shop in town, Wonko’s does have a home-​y feel that a lot of the shops I visited in Austin lacked. They also had the largest selection of action figures than any other shop which is probably why the word toys is in the title. A lot of the usual merchandise like Star Wars and Batman but found some really cool Halo and Gears of War figures too. The one caveat about this place is that when a tournament is going down, it’s too crowded to walk through. I couldn’t see most of the stuff in the back because it was so packed. Not really Wonko’s fault but they are in definite need of an expansion.

This is a great store and such a friendly atmosphere. Eric, the owner, and his family knew me by name after not too long of going there to play games and have always provided a great family atmosphere. I sometimes bring my kids (ages 2 and 7) and they are always welcome (Eric, et al, know their names too).
Beyond just the store, you can tell that Eric has a love of what he does and the games in the store are a passion for him. If you need help with anything geek culture related, Eric will take time out to give you a hand without being pushy about it. I’ll be honest, I can find better prices on stuff on-​line, but always make sure to make purchases here as I definitely want this store to stick around.

I came here after seeing this place on the TV show Toy Hunter hoping to score some vintage toys. They don’t have the hugest selection of vintage and the good stuff they do have are a bit overpriced. Half of the place is dedicated to role playing gamers, there were a lot of them in the back intensely going at it. Not my cup of tea but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I have to say I was a bit disappointed overall with Wonko’s. Maybe the Toy Hunter guy was right, all the good stuff is locked up in the storage room in the back. Boo.

I’m not a gamer by the standards of most people going to a store like this, but I do enjoy something different every once in a while. While I thought most places that have a niche usually welcome new people with open arms, this place was not one of them.
I played the game Munchkin with my friend a while back and fell in love with it. I just HAD to have it. I did my research on the internet and found a few places that sold the game (i.e. Target online, Amazon, etc.), but there were only two stores in Austin that seemed to sell the game. Since I live within a mile of Wonko’s, I figured I would stop by to see how much they were asking for the game.
Me and my boyfriend walked into the store, perusing the aisle, looking for the game. Finally, we see the overloaded display full of Munchkin stuff. I find the original game, but there is no price tag on the box so I ask the lady behind the counter. She tells me it’s so much which was a bit pricier than what I found elsewhere on the internet. I stepped back to think about it and discuss the investment with my boyfriend when they kept trying to sell the game to me. I finally replied, «Yeah, I’m just thinking about my options. I can buy the game online at Target for about $ 7 less.» This is where the fun really began.
The guy behind the counter immediately started getting extremely defensive, telling me about how it doesn’t support local businesses and how the creator of the game would be appalled that I didn’t IMMEDIATELY go to them. Look, I understand supporting local businesses (I’m the 99%!) but I also prefer to save a few dollars when the good is the EXACT same.
The lady behind the counter, which I find out is the wife to the guy, chimed in a few times with a few remarks, but nothing nearly as bad. She turned the sale around, bringing in a more positive light rather than the obnoxiously negative tone set before.
Although they are appreciated by the creator of Munchkin, Steve Jackson (who lives in Austin), they did have a holier-​than-​thou attitude that was not appreciative. It’s easier to support local businesses that treat you like a human being rather than a number, or worse, scum. I guess the gaming world is not for me.
