La Tolteca has amazing aspects and just ok aspects about it. Their chips and salsa are the best. Their salsa is incredible, I could drink it. And yes, I just said that. Their carne asada is also amazing. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu with carne asada but I prefer the carne asada burrito wet! However, I was never too impressed when I’ve tried their other dishes such as the chile rellano, chicken tacos, enchiladas. Those dishes and others aren’t bad, their just nothing special. One last thing, La Tolteca is great for groups because of how you individually order at the counter, rather than having split the check or figure all that annoying stuff out.

Tasty food and yummy margaritas for a really reasonable price! I’d never been before and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Plus, the chips and salsa were amazing and plentiful

Food is made with lard. Even their chips. Nothing special about the place, the taste, or service. Prices a bit high for Mexican food. Okay, I get it, you have overhead but at least make the food taste authentic. Damn I miss Carmen’s! I will not go back

Worst service ever ! I have been coming to this place for many years and thought this place was decent But today was one of the worst days to come and eat. I understand it’s fathers days and it’s busy everywhere but maybe if the manager would be more attentive things would be more organize. We ordered our food at 2:50pm didn’t get served till almost 3:50 food was dry and looked un appetizing. People that ordered before us were being serve first. So we left all of our food at the table and asked for our money back. Had to leave to another restaurant after a hour wait. Definitely not coming to this place again. Very disappointed did not expect this!

Pros: I tried this place over 9 years ago with my GF. Thought the place was nasty. Then tried it one more time that same year and Let’s just say I’ve been coming back ever since. I get the taco plate every time and you can’t go wrong. Haven’t changed my order in years so I can’t speak on the other foods besides the taco plate which is delicious. My mouth is just salivating thinking about it lol. But I can speak for the service. As we all know this isn’t a franchise(should be) but each employee in my option take pride in treating every customer with respect/care. As if it’s their family business. Very rare I love it. Con: wish they were open on Tuesday, I mean cmon a brotha needs a taco on taco Tuesday lol

I craved authentic Mexican food and was told that the West Coast offered a great selection. Well, the reviews did NOT lie, this place provided the BEST Mexican food I’ve ever tried. Let’s just say that after indulging in their fish burrito, I returned back to NYC and couldn’t not have cheated on my taste buds by visiting any other place simply because I was sold by the delicious goodness this place offered lol absolutely filing portions, great service, delicious homemade chips and guacamole and a beautiful selection of everything from tacos right down to burritos. What’s not to love about this place

Hmm, I think I ordered the wrong thing. I loved the carne asada one that my boyfriend ordered, the meat was tender and the spices or rubs that was marinated with it was delicious. Mine however was just a hot mess. I can’t even remember what I ordered. LOL. Except I do remember it being a plate of cold iceberg lettuce with small pieces of dried meat underneath it. The salsa on top was a soggy mess with no flavor. The entire plate was an abomination. The free chips and salsa was super greasy from the looks of it(oil was dripping to the bottom in masses, kind of gross). The place was loud and rowdy because it’s basically self-seating communal style. The chairs and tables look like they were brought from home(not to mention, oily)… Lol. It just didn’t feel very put together restaurant, imho.

Yes! we have family that lives three hours up north & they make this their first and last stop when visiting. Cant go wrong with authentic Mexican & from a restaurant that been around since my parents were young. They have definitely been doing something right. Me personally i order enchilada plate. My family is always getting taquitos. Rice and beans are an item I will order to go just because I want a snack. Our whole family enjoys this restaurant & i bring friend here as often as possible.

For me this is almost as good as it gets. This place has been around for a long time, is family owned and operated, and they put out good food. I’ve had big family dinners for special occasions(it’s easy to pull together a few tables for big groups) but they also have a private side room available. I’m also just met up for 1 on 1 lunches, and grabbed food to go. For big parties at home they’ve been able to provide us with massive trays of rice and beans, enchiladas, guacamole, chips and salsa and everyone always loves the food. I don’t know what Joseph B. is talking about… this is not a hole in a wall, the food is delicious, and is DEFINITELY not overpriced. As far as the environment being«noisy and rough», If you’re agoraphobic or have social anxiety it’s probably advisable not to go out anywhere– you can’t fault all the La Tolteca guests for wanting to eat here. And I don’t know what rough means. I only ever see families and couples, usually celebrating something, eating here. If that’s a veiled slur at the Hispanic community, Joseph B. might want to stay out of Azusa, then. Just sayin’. Everyone is always friendly and welcoming their wearing multiple hats and multi-tasking. Even the bussers have smiles.(If you’re good to people, they’ll be good to you). The only improvement I’d recommend is rounding out the menu with a couple more vegetarian friendly options, even adding some nopales or bell peppers to the menu would be great. I’ll be back every chance I can, though!

Second time coming to this place and I’m very impressed with the atmosphere and the food. I ordered the carne asada burrito with the beans and rice platter with the red sauce on top with melted cheese and I finished every last bit of it. the service overall was great from ordering to having your order brought to your table. I’m definitely coming again

I would give this hole in the wall, 0 stars if I could. The over all experience is bad. The food is overpriced for what you get, the environment is noisy and rough, and one of the staff members was extremely rude to me as if eating there at Toltecas is a privilege and honor. I’ll never go back to this place, it should be shut down.

I always get the chicken enchilada plate and I haven’t been disappointed. It’s delicious and I love that it’s always hot, not warm, but actually hot when it comes to the table. I appreciate that. I enjoy this place for a casual night out for dinner

Good authentic Mexican restaurant, word on the street is they’ve been around since the 40s. Everything is made in house from the tortilla chips to the guacamole. Came here post golf round with my collegiate golf team and we all ordered something different. I got the combination plate which included a cheese enchilada, taco, chile verde, rice and beans. It’s a huge plate, you could honestly share this with someone. You order at the counter and then sit in the large dining hall, a server brings your food pretty quickly. Definitely not your typical restaurant where there’s a constant server, so stay away if you’re looking to have that luxury. It’s not the best Mexican food I’ve ever had either, justifying the four star rating. Overall the experience was good, I think I just needed to order something a bit smaller. My eyes were bigger than my stomach tonight. Would return to try something new.

Solid mexican food. I liked the flavor! My wife and I discovered this restaurant while riding the Gold Line for the opening day. We got off at Azusa and walked down to find this restaurant. You wait in a line, place your order, and get a number to put on your table. Then they give you chips and salsa to eat while you wait. There’s plenty of space and seating, and it’s very family friendly. My 3 and 1 year old kids enjoyed themselves, and they could be themselves(read: not quiet) without disturbing other patrons. The food arrived quickly, and it was delicious. You get free refills on drinks, just go give them your cup. For the price, this is a great set-up.

I finally decided to try this place after hearing some good things about it. I figured it might be a hit or miss based on reviews I had read, but I had high hopes. We walked in, looked at the menu and ordered some food. I went with the carne asada plate. It was okay, I’ve had better elsewhere. There was a sweet flavor somewhere. It was in the beans or meat or pico, I didn’t care for it. They do give a large portion of guac with the meat. Chips and salsa were okay, nothing I’d stop by to order and take to a party. I’ll give it a couple of more tries, maybe I just didn’t order the right thing.

We were on our way to a different Mexican restaurant when I remembered that my coworkers had mentioned this place was pretty good. I’ve lived in the area 5 years, and all this time I had managed to think this place was a grocery store. The building was large and the parking lot is large like one. We decided to give it a try, and I kind of regret not going to our usual place. This isn’t a typical restaurant. You order at the counter, move down the line to get your drinks and chips and salsa. Sit down, and they bring you your food. There were lots of people coming in to order take out, mainly masa and chips and salsa. The chips weren’t very good. The salsa was okay. Had a tiny bit of kick. Ordered the menudo. It was better than some other places, but I added a lot of stuff. I added tapatio, chile powder, oregano, cilantro, onions, salt, and lime. It took a lot to get the spice I want. The pieces of tripe were huge, needed a knife to cut them smaller. Had a bite of the huevos con chile verde, kind of bland and lacked flavor. Carne asada was okay. Overall I wasn’t very impressed with the food, and probably won’t be going back.

We came here because an acquaintance who is Mexican said this is the best place outside Mexico. The food is mediocre, salty, chewy meat. I ordered two carne asada tacos and they were just too salty and had no flavor. The rice was and beans werent that good. Service was okay. On our way out, my child pointed out something on the floor and upon close inspection it was a cockcroach about 2 inches in length. I was disgusted. I will never set foot in this place again.
