Established in 1997.

Michael Affholter has been a Master Goldsmith for 30 years. Our first store was opened in Wyandotte, Michigan in 1985. We moved to Bad Axe in in 1997 and have called Bad Axe home since. Thanks to Herman Hiss & Co. in Bay City, Michigan (the oldest jewelry store in Michigan), Michael has been honing & improving his skills almost daily!

He still does contract work for Herman Hiss two days a week and is a valuable member of their team as well. His expertise and client base growth led to us moving into our present location at 203 E Huron Ave in Downtown Bad Axe — Michael J’s Design Studio & Goldsmith Shoppe!

Michael J Designs is a very nice small jewelry store however it is big on service. Michaels custom work is top notch. He works with you in the design of your ring or other piece and he captures your personality in your piece. His repair work is also wonderful. We are so pleased with everything he has created for us.
