Finding street parking downtown can feel a little like searching for Willie Wonka’s golden ticket as I drive around and around the same blocks, ever hoping that on this NEXT pass the parking fairy will grace me with that little stretch of open curb. Eventually I always give up and head here, to the aptly named 18th& Eye Public Parking garage on the Northwest corner of 18th& Eye. Why do I never think to come here first? The garage is well lit, protected from the blazing sun or pouring rain, and the first two hours of parking are always free. That should be enough of a draw for anybody. The parking garage is open 7 days a week from 5:00 am till 2:30 am, but beware those of you who have trouble meeting curfew, once they’ve closed for the day you’ll be unable to get your vehicle out until it opens the next morning.(For those of you who are soooo bad at math that you’re trembling in your boots over that last remark, let me reassure you; the lot is only closed for 2 ½ hours each night so if you’re running seriously late you won’t have to wait for long before it reopens. The first two hours of parking are always free and it will only cost you $ 1 an hour to keep your vehicle parked after that, up to a maximum of $ 10 per day. Don’t lose your parking ticket, though, as you’ll have to pay the $ 10 maximum. The main entrance is on 18th Street, but there is a separate entrance/exit for people who pay for their parking by the month.
