Kakes by Karen

Karen’s «kakes» are phenomenal! She made the cake for my parents’ wedding 26 years ago, and she made the cake for my wedding last week. I’ve seen and heard some reviews that says she can tend to be rude. Don’t mistake her short conversations as her being rude! She is very friendly… she just gets straight to the point and gets you in and out of her shop (which I appreciated because we were very busy with work and wedding planning). My phone conversations with her were the same way: short and sweet. She made a small, two-​layer cake and some sheet cakes for our wedding, and it was the most delicious cake I’ve ever had. Our cake looked beautiful as well. She couldn’t have done a better job.

She did my wedding cake! The prices are reasonable and she works with you. I did 3 payments. My cake was so good and fresh!
The shop is in Oildale and I almost didn’t order from here because of the area. I heard a lot of good things about her cakes so I did my cake tasting and had to order from her. I was happy with this place.

Had my 25^th birthday cake done by Karen with dark purple frosting, black polka dots, and a black bow… don’t worry, she asked my Mom when she picked it up how old I was turning because of the odd colors. I loved it! The inside was white cake and strawberries… everyone at my dinner loved it. Definitely recommend her for any cake needs.

I ordered 2 dozen vanilla cupcakes with sky blue frosting and sugar sprinkles for my sister’s bridal shower. They were so delicious! Cupcakes were perfectly moist and the frosting was just perfect, not too sweet. Thanks Kakes by Karen for your perfect little cupcakes!

Karen is widely regarded as the best in Bakersfield for wedding cakes, so we used her for our wedding. Throughout the planning process, we were disappointed by how abrasive she was – she practically hung up the phone on me when I tried to book her a few months too early.
Our cake was great – it was decorated very well & exactly how we requested, and we had several guests tell us how much they loved it. However, it was not the cake we ordered! It appeared she maybe swapped out 2 or 3 layers of our 4 layer cake with random flavors we did not request. We were very disappointed when we got our pieces on our wedding night & they were not what we ordered. We were even more disappointed when we cut into our cake topper & it was again not what we ordered!
Overall though, the cake was still good, so I’d use her again.

Karen made our wedding cake 10 years ago and it was fabulous. A simple yet elegant white fondant with raspberry cream cheese filling. So moist — even days after the wedding — and the bite on our one year anniversary, after all that time in the freezer, was still palatable.
For our 10^th anniversary, I had Karen do a mini version of our wedding cake. I had not had the cake in 10 years and had really built it up in my head. I also feared that my love for the cake was tied up with my wonderful memories of the day, so I was hesitant when we tried it. I didn’t need to worry — it was just as moist and delicious as I remembered.
Karen is easy to work with, incredibly affordable, and I have never had a better cake. Her quality ingredients are consistent and her cake artistry is exceptional. I highly recommend this establishment. She has had a part in creating two beautiful (and tasty) memories in my life and I will include her in many more in the future!
