History

Established in 1952.

The Bakersfield Rescue Mission began in 1951 by a successful group of businessmen, inspired by one man, Alonzo Heath. Their goal was to provide food, clothes, shelter and recovery. The Mission was officially incorporated in October of 1952 as a non-profit, non-denominational service organization.

In 2012 The Bakersfield Rescue Mission celebrated 60 years of service to the community of Kern County by re-branding as «The Mission at Kern County.» First, as the largest provider of homeless and addiction recovery services in all of Kern County, we want to help the community better understand who we are. Second, we aim to eliminate confusion about our ministry. There are a handful of other organizations that serve Bakersfield, and we want locals to know that The Mission at Kern County is the place where the homeless and addicted can come not just for a day of food and night of shelter, but Christ-centered long-term care that transforms lives.
