History

Established in 1964.

In 1965, John and Janice White opened the gates to White Forest Nursery with just a yard full of plants and a pitch-​up tent. John’s experience as an Agricultural Inspector for the state and horticultural degree from UC Berkeley allowed him to successfully supply plants to the Bakersfield area, but more importantly supply a wealth of knowledge to his customers. John and Janice established a tradition of offering a wide selection of plants along with a great deal of knowledge to make his customers successful a tradition that has been carried on by John’s son Jere White and daughter-​in-​law Rita White still to this day. After more than 45 years, White Forest Nursery has served its customers with the best customer service, plant selection, and gardening advice in all of Kern County.

With a Masters Degree in Biology from Stanford University and over 30 years of experience in the Nursery and Horticultural Industries, Jere knows what he’s talking about when it comes to plants. As the owner of White Forest Nursery and host of KERN — 1180 Garden Party Radio Show, making people successful in the garden is his ultimate goal. Making gardening fun and easy is what it’s all about. Because of that, Jere utilized his horticultural knowledge and expertise to develop the soil treatments GardenMax, TurfMax, and PenMax Plus. These soil treatments were developed with the beginner gardener in mind to bring success to everyone in the garden.

This place has a very large selection and the prices were pretty good. I didn’t buy a plant, because I was shopping around a bit, but did pick up some bulbs. Bulb selection isn’t huge, but they had what I wanted. Spoke to a nice lady here who let me ask her all kinds of questions, since I’m new to the area and don’t know what grows here. She was knowledgable and helpful. The only drawback is the location way out in BFE…

OPEN SATURDAYS!!!
Every time we come here we have a great experience. The staff is approachable, knowledgable, efficient, and very helpful. They have a HUGE and affordable inventory for whatever your gardening needs are: fruit trees (bare root & in pot), berries, shrubs, roses/​flowers, a plethora of pots, decorative items, the list goes on. They’ll even load it up in your tiny Prius for you! Plus, they have FREE workshops to teach you how to take care of your plants so you have a healthy garden! Love this place!

Bakersfield’s largest (and one of the BEST nurseries in Centrial California!) In business for over 40 years owned and operated by Jere and Rita White, who have some of the BEST knowledge in plants, horticulture and landscape in Centrial California! If you are a big professional landscape contractor or just a average home owner who loves to «go overboard» on your plants and landscape… This nursery is always at the top of your list! I have been a customer of White forest Nursery for over 30 years myself, as I get plants and other items that the big-​box stores cannot and will not carry! and one thing that is really awesome about this nursery: it has stayed STRONG IN BUSINESS ever since it opened way before I was even born… it has remained strong even during the peak of Wal Mart’s DESTRUCTIVE invasion of Bakersfield about 7 years ago (which wiped out Cooper’s and about a dozen other smaller nurseries in the Bakersfield and Rosedale areas.) Wal Mart is not as much of a threat to local nurseries these days, as they scaled way back their garden centers in the recent years (not even having garden centers in the winter, because they now use the space for Christmas «over-​stock», giving local businesses a fighting chance to recover. As for white Forest Nursery, I was very concerned because I bought most of my plants and other goods there, and also my buddy Nick Hendricks (Artistic Landscape Design) who I do work with off and on buys most of his plants, trees and shrubs for landscape jobs at White Forest. I buy alot of my coleus and succulent plants there as well. Also White Forest has the BEST selection of roses, both bare-​root (in February and March) and in pots. WHITE FOREST IS THE BEST for selection and Jere and Rita White and their staff are the most helpful in the local nursery business!!!

Wow! They have winter pots and were clearly on sale and the manager said the were regular price! Really? They were near dead! She said she was going to throw them out if no body buys them… hmm HELLO! was I not?
Anyway, the staff were freaking out with the line being too long…(only 3 of us)
On a good note: the young lady was nice and ended up giving me a discount 17% (hence, me giving 2 stars)
I rather support our local businesses than the big box stores… but c’mon treat us good!

Perfect place to go for all of your gardening needs. There is a wide variety to choose from with knowledgeable staff who are very friendly and will answer all of your questions. I have shopped here on two occasions, and I am very impressed with the level of integrity and honesty. There was a discrepancy on my sales slip and when I discovered the overcharge, they gladly reimbursed my charge card. They took my word as a customer that I did not receive certain items on my sales slip over the phone and they were honest enough to reimburse me that is good business, I will always shop here!!!

My favorite nursery. I have bought about 30 fruit trees from them and plan to buy about 18 more. The staff is amazing and knowledgable. They have helped me pick out my trees and learn how to care for them.
They may be a little more money then the home store but the customer service and knowledge is well worth it.

Just paid $ 725 for 9 crêpe myrtles. They called to deliver and tell me that I will need support poles or they will fall over and it was $ 220 I wasn’t told that there but I went ahead and did it. Well it has been a week and 2 look they are dying. I called to see what the policy is and there is no return ior exchange policy which I wasn’t told when I bought either. I will not be back and I should’ve never not shopped at Boles. An expensive lesson.

Something about this place always makes me happy. Maybe it’s the cute Fairtale like exterior, or the endless pathways that meander through their garden like nursery.
In a time when most people purchase their plants from big box stores, this place remembers their purpose and keeps plenty of well informed specialists on hand. Simply put, White Forest has quality service unlike any other place in town. They are professionals and are very helpful in recommending plants or trees for your specific location.
Their selection of rare plants and variety of trees make this place superior to other local nurseries. They also have a nice selection of pots.
Yes, it is a distance for most people (unless you live on the East Side), but it’s well worth the drive.
During the early summer months they always have a big sale. You can get plants as little as a $ 1.99. Even big box stores can’t beat that!

This is a nice size nursery with a large variety to choose from. They also have a big selection of indoor plants and even quite a variety of drought resistant succulents.
As you enter through their main doors they have several rooms of nice decorations for both inside the house and for the yard as well. They had lots of different kinds of unique pots and planting ideas shown. Everything was decorated very well and I loved that you could very easily walk around as their walk ways are plenty wide.
My daughter and I visited them on Sunday as I was looking for an indoor plant. She shops here all the time and I sure can see why. We spent probably 2 hours walking around and just as I saw one plant I liked another farther down caught my eye. Really the selection is just that big. And all their plants look healthy and well cared for.
Well I finally settled on an ornamental pepper plant in a 6″ container. Walking through to the register I noticed a self watering pot I just had to have but it was the last one they had and they had a display plant in it.
Can you believe they offered to sell me the pot and move their plant so I could have the pot? To take it even farther they transferred the pepper plant I was buying into the pot for me too and topped of the dirt needed as well. Wow!
Ultimately it’s the attitude of the people that can make or break a place and while there, we dealt with 4 different employees and every one of them was knowledgeable, helpful and nice.
Outstanding customer service, reasonable prices, a good selection and it’s a small local business. It doesn’t get better than that!

If you dont mind the drive, they are about as good as it gets. They have an extensive selection and their knowledge and help is just as amazing. I have never been here where I was disappointed in a single thing, and I have been here for a range from an indoor gift to full on trees to plant.
I could go on, but then it would just be picking out single things to rave about, and that seems excessive.
I have taken a couple of people there, and each time they ask me ‘well what is this place like’, and each time I tell them ‘you’ll just have to see’. Just about every time, they tell me ‘you were right, you have to see it yourself to understand’.
I would have to say the *only* con I have, which isnt even a con they can control themselves, is the Bakersfield heat. It sure does a number on some of those poor plants.
