History

Established in 1974.

Kolstein Music, Inc., the parent corporate company of Samuel Kolstein & Son. Ltd., Violinmakers, was formed in 1974. It was the outcome of a developing product division stemming out of the Samuel Kolstein & Son, Ltd. Violinshop.

Kolstein Music, Inc. maintains all the product development and production of the Kolstein products. It is also concerned with importation of string related accessory products for international distribution.

Kolstein Music, Inc. maintains its facilities in a three building complex at 795 Foxhurst Road, Baldwin, NY 11 510 USA, with a fourth new location to open shortly.

When founded in 1974, the principals of the corporation were Samuel Kolstein and Barrie Kolstein.

Presently, the corporation is under the control of Barrie Kolstein serving as owner and CEO of Kolstein Music, Inc. and Samuel Kolstein & Son, Ltd. with a staff of over 12 experts in violin restoration, marketing and production.

It’s not surprising that there are few reviews. Kolstein’s loyal
customers are real people with real lives.
They have incredible instruments, with great setups, and perhaps the legendary
expertise and integrity in the string musical instrument business and recoginzed
for their specialty, THE Upright Bass shop in America.
They have a huge collection of the most prestigious and wonderful basses
in the country and perhaps the world. Over the years they have accumulated
vast collections of vintage basses and have done top quality restorations of
the pedigree instruments they sell.
Their repair shop is unequaled in handing repairs, and they do tonal
work on instruments, including re-​tuning and graduating tops.
They also service the student market with quality rentals and lower end
instruments. The thing is, the student gets a quality instrument with
a top quality setup, strings, and that is very important and valuable.
A real specialty, Barrie has a number of bows started out of these
Permanbuco bow started by his father, and finished by Barrie.
These represent incredible opportunities to get a bow of a lifetime.

Mr. Kolstein is superb both in his workmanship as well as his customer service. I have rented my children’s instruments from him for 4 years. Whenever there was an issue, he and his assistants correct the problems promptly and professionally. I recommend purchasing the service plan if you are renting for a child. I have recommended this shop to friends, and those friends and their kids have been happy with my suggestion. My son has received many compliments on the quality of the sound of his cello when he has played it in festivals, concerts, and family gatherings.

Honest gentleman not looking to make the quick buck. Would rather have a beginner such as my self seek professional guidance first before making the plunge and buying an instrument. This kind of honesty is rather hard to find in today’s world. Will definitely return if my quest is meant to be.
