My paintings are inspired by landscapes and the sea, animals, architecture, and of course, people. I strive to capture the essence and broad range of subjects while creating pleasing design with vibrant color, strong strokes, and capturing the play of light and shadows. Some is created in studio and some on location (Plein Air). Plein Air requires organization and a rapid, decisive style to capture the substance before the changing light affects the image.
My art training and medical background gives me an important feel for anatomy and mass that is very important for painting animal and human portraits. The eyes are especially important for capturing the essence I strive to evoke the and soul of the being. For dog portraits, it is important to attempt to see their faithful companion through the owner’s eyes. To paint a home or a boat requires paying attention to the little details that make it special.
If you look on my website, you will see the rang or works I have been commissioned to paint, including portraits of people, and their homes, boats and pets plus other subjects. Other times, I paint because the subject matter captivates me, whether it is a landscape, a maritime seascape, an animal, or some other subject.
I have available original oil paintings as well as giclees of my paintings. (A high resolution photograph of the original painting printed on canvas.) The result looks strikingly like an original, but with less texture…
History
Established in 2006.
I have been painting for decades. When I was laid off in the downturn and couldn’t find a job I decided to turn to my passion and have been painting full time ever since. Please take a look at my website if you like my paintings you see here. Nature/landscapes, animals, buildings, boats and of course the human connection inspire me. I strive to capture the essence of my broad subject range with appealing design, broad strokes, lively color and vibration of light and shadows. When painting plein air (landscapes on location) I must be fast and decisive to capture the scene before the light changes!
To paint animal and human portraits it is important to understand anatomy and mass. I work hard to evoke the essence and soul of the being through the eyes. Dog portraits require understanding of dog and owner to be able to see the dog through the owner’s eyes. When painting a sailing vessel or a home, I pay strict and thoughtful attention to details. I look forward to speaking with you.
Meet the Business Owner
Carol M.
Business Owner
Carol McClees, a native New Englander, married a native Marylander and currently lives in Baltimore, MD. While Carol has painted for more than 30 years, it wasn’t until sailing around the Chesapeake on her boat, Skean Dhu, that she truly understand the brilliance of outdoor artistry. With each breathtaking image, whether it is a landscape, portrait, or seascape, she envisions a painting with many color variations. She has endeavored to bring to life not only the environment around her, but also the beloved animals in others’ lives.
Carol has studied with numerous artists over the years: Nancy Howell, Cedric and Joanette Egeli, Jean Brinton-Jaecks, and most recently, Carol Lee Thompson. All have inspired Carol to paint with her mind through laughter, candor and a genuine spirit in search of the truth. Workshops with David Leffel, Kenn Backhaus, Scott Christensen, Scott Powers and Carolyn Egeli have stretched Carol to find greater wisdom and sign-posts toward greater knowledge.
