History

Established in 1979.

In the early 1900’s O. H. Bishop started his moving company in Bluefield, West Virginia, with one truck and one plan — to be the best. Fast forward four generations, and Eastern Moving & Storage Company is among the best in the industry.

Today Eastern is owned and operated by James Bishop, Jr. and James Bishop, III. We take great pride in carrying on the family tradition of excellence!

The Bishop family history in the moving and storage industry dates back to the early 1900’s in Bluefield, WV when O. H. Bishop (Jim Bishop, Jr’s grandfather) bought his first truck.

O. H. Bishop’s two sons (O. H., Jr. & Jim, Sr.) both worked for their father’s company throughout the early 1900’s. Eventually both brothers moved to Maryland to start their own moving companies. Jim, Sr. started his company, «Safeway Moving & Storage», in Baltimore in 1950. Jim, Jr. worked for his father’s company (alongside his brothers) until setting out on his own in the early 1970’s to create Eastern Moving & Storage Company.

In April of 1979 Eastern Moving & Storage Company was incorporated in Baltimore, Maryland by Jim Bishop, Jr. Its first location, on Pulaski Highway just north of the beltway, remains its primary location today.

In 2001, Eastern Moving expanded its operations by purchasing BelAir Moving & Storage Company in Joppa, MD and becoming an agent for Bekins.

Tori and Durrell helped us move on Friday, August 14th. They arrived on time, were prepared for the job, and had a great attitude. Job finished on time and worked out to be less than the estimated cost. Highly reccommend this team!

These guys are amazing. From the very first phone call we received, we knew we had made the right choice. Erick, Tori, Melvin, James and Dejuan couldn’t have been more professional. They took great care to wrap all the furniture and all pieces sturdily and with precision. When delivering to our new home they put the boxes and furniture in their designated spots, making our transition so much easier with their help. They even moved boxes we had incorrectly directed to their correct rooms — we felt so bad but they were more than willing! They worked so hard through the sweltering heat and our un-​air conditioned home because we couldn’t figure out how to work the thermostat. We bought the guys pizza and we even had to force them to stop working to get them to eat. All in all this was a great experience and I would recommend this company and this particular team of movers to anyone :)

Eastern Moving & Storage is everything you want in a moving company! I’d recommend them to anyone in the Baltimore area. Their staff are professional, responsive, and courteous. Gail and Jim were extremely gracious in helping me sort out what I needed to know for a long distance move– and the Eastern movers who loaded my POD were extremely efficient, professional and thoughtful. The team’s flexibility and understanding when I hit unexpected snags with my move timeline was amazing, and and their ability to keep to the move date I needed– even if that meant a long day for the movers– was a testament to their consistency and exceptional service. Count on Eastern Moving & Storage– you will not be disappointed!

Recently moved from NW Baltimore to Howard County.
Working with Jim from the outset was very easy. Jim was very accessible and straightforward. He visited our old home and provided a quote. The estimate was a little below actual cost but I took it for what it was, an estimate. I was prepared to pay more or less based on actual cost if the job was done right. I think I had much more crap than we all realized!
The quality of the move was exceptional.
Prior to the movers’ arrival, I received a heads-​up phone call from the head guy on the team (James). They were on time. Right from the get-​go, you could see these guys were professionals. They were all business. They were very polite, careful, and if there was anything regarding clarification, they inquired instead of forcing square pegs into round holes. I don’t know how they do what they do since it is grueling work. But no gripes, complaints, or even an appearance of fatigue. These men were machines.
Eastern Moving comes with my highest recommendation. They do the job right!

I had a really bad experience with these guys. They promised crew members in their regular employ and I did not get that. The men were slow, disorganized and easily distracted. If I didn’t help them lift and place boxes and furniture, it would have gone on until midnight at $ 115 per hour. Damaged possessions and property too. The lead guy had energy, but the other two were not good and they even came with a broken dolly –ridiculous.

We recently move from Baltimore City to a condo in Essex, Md. This being the first time my husband moved in 60 years, he was on edge. We hired Eastern Moving after reading so many other reviews. What a wonderful company to work with. Professional, courteous, hard working and our total cost came under the initial quote. All of our furniture and goods arrived in perfect condition. We bought the guys lunch and we had to make them stop to eat. Such hard workers!
