H&R Block

I went in to have my taxes looked at, having just moved here from Northern Illinois, I was wanting to deal with some place local, rather than use the accountant my family had used for years back in my hometown. I set up an appointment over the phone and arrived at my scheduled time. The gentleman who I had been scheduled with did not know how to submit Illinois and Maryland taxes in the same tax return, so I was given over to another lady who thought her net appointment was 10 minutes late, but in reality had simply forgotten what time they were coming in at. As such, when they did come in, she told them that they had missed their appointment and would have to wait.
As for my experience, having dealt with my accountant in previous years, I knew ahead of time some of the information he would need in order to maximize my return. I had brought in all of the papers about my student loans, paperwork stating how much I commute between two jobs, the length of travel I did to move to Baltimore for my new job, and quite a number of other things. The lady who was «helping» me dismissed much of what I brought in and said I could only use roughly a quarter of the student loan interest that I had paid the previous year.
After dismissing my suggestions, and plugging all of my information into her system she stated that I would end up owing the government approximately $ 200 dollars and that they would charge me something to the effect of an ADDITIONAL $ 200 for the HONOR of getting my obligation down to $ 200.
Obviously, I was rather wide-​eyed at this amount, as I had paid taxes year round, and ultimately made less than $ 40,000 while making student loan payments of $ 450 a month. She smugly looked at me and said, «You had no idea it was gonna cost this much to get your taxes done did you?» I shook my head, still flabbergasted, as I had paid $ 95 to the accountant every year, and always gotten money back. The woman then said to me, «So are you going to just go back and use your mother’s accountant again,» in a way that dripped with condescension.
In fact, I did use our old accountant, who was able to get me a RETURN of approximately $ 200 all said and done, and cost SUBSTANTIALLY less than H&R Block. I am a college graduate, currently working on my masters, all of which I have done while financing my own education. I cannot conceive of how this woman thought it was okay to speak to me in the manner she did, or intimate that she thought I came from privilege. I would NEVER recommend this H&R Block location to ANYONE, and if the metrics she used are what the company has nationwide, I would avoid H&R Block as a whole.
