Hole-in-the-Wall Campgrounds

This place is just a great campground. I mean, just the name is awesome. If you’re into camping, its one of those places you have to go to!
I found the wind to be «refreshing»

My wife and I camped here in late December, on a road trip of the west, a bit more than halfway between the Bay Area and the Grand Canyon. The other reviewers are correct in their assessments: beautiful scenery, very strong wind. I’d guess it was gusting to 20 – 30 knots most of the night, although with fairly frequent still periods, which was helpful for lighting the stove. We have a pretty good two person tent and I was never concerned about it collapsing or anything, but it was pretty loud. Probably about half a dozen RVs here and no other tents (maybe they read the Unilocal reviews first). Lots of extra space in late December. The fee is paid by self-​registration, $ 12. Running water bathrooms at the visitors center nearby. A beautiful place to wake up in the morning, and a nice drive into the park to get here.

If you’re in the mood for an adventurous trip to Vegas, Hole-​in-​the-​Wall Campground is the perfect place for you. Instead of driving straight on I-​15 in one day, my friends and I decided, «Hey, why not camp on the way there?»
After an arduous journey that took us from Riverside to North Hollywood, then Vacaville, and Barstow, we finally got there at 1 in the morning. Also, this was after the passing of a huge storm that tormented California for a good week = freezing desert temperatures. I have no idea how, but we managed to set up our tent and «sleep» throughout the night, covered in 3 layers of jackets inside of our sleeping bags.
Helpful hint to make sure your tent doesn’t fly off of its foundation in the 20+ MPH winds: tie a thick rope to the rods or any other hooks on your tent, and then put the other end under a heavy rock. If it wasn’t for the genius idea my civil engineering friend proposed, our tent would have for sure toppled by the morning.
The only problem here is the wind. It makes you freeze, it makes your tent fall and it doesn’t let you start a fire. Therefore, make sure you get here in the afternoon before the wind starts heating up. Other than that, the facilities are typical, the view is amazing, and the bathroom doesn’t stink like shit.

Smiling eager faces were getting restless in the car as we pulled up to the campground in the desert… The views were amazing, and we knew from reading about it that dune hiking, cave exploring, and desert fun was right around the bend.
SNAP SNAP SNAP. Damn you wind. The wind snapped our tent poles and almost blew it away despite all of our stuff being inside of it. I’m pretty sure all the RV’s parked around this campground were laughing at us and our epic fail. We tried pitching a tent for an hour, then we made a ghetto tent on the back of a truck bed… then we left.
My review is very similar to Eric C.‘s, but that’s because we got pwnd together. I believe this was one of the windiest days of the year; not an everyday thing.
This site is smack dab in the middle of the desert. There is SO much to check out around it, and it’s untapped beauty is something you rarely have a chance to see in life… It is definitely the most beautiful hole in the wall you will ever see, and at $ 12 dollars a night for the campground it can’t get better for that price (as long as you don’t have 60+ mph winds like our group).

March 22^nd, 2009 was one of the windiest days in Southern California. March 22^nd was also the day me and my friends decided to go camping in the Mojave.
At $ 12 a night, HITW provides a campsite with excellent views of both the desert and the volcanic rock formations. It’s suitable for tents, campers, and RV’s, so pick your poison. Outhouses, firepits and picnic benches are provided as well.
Our 7 person tent fell victim to the high (60+ MPH) winds. After 3 hours of numb-​handed fumbling with the tent and make-​shift shelter in the back of a F-​150, it was decided that this was too much for even Chuck Norris to handle. So bags were packed, and the 7 of us set off for Vegas.
