This place is definitely a hidden gem. it is off the beaten path on Florida Drive, in a questionable area, sitting alone in the back of a cluster of empty store fronts. The only thing that identifies its presence is a small colorful flashing sign in the window. And be warned, google maps will drop you off in the parking lot of American Pawn. This place is located at the back of that complex. Be careful not the hit the fire yellow extinguisher located in the middle of the drive that leads back to this place.
This place is small. Three tables out in front of a counter, a couple shelves with African food items for sale, and a few pictures adorn the walls. There was no one in site when we entered. He heard noise in the back, so we called out. A women, who turned out to be the owner, stepped out and greeted us. She was pleasant, showed us the menu and asked if we had ever eaten African food. I have been to several African restaurants in st Louis, but the experience was new to my dining companion. I opted for the FuFu with peanut soup and beef. We were told we would have to wait a bit, due to the fact that she was preparing a couple take out orders. About 15 minutes later our food arrived.
The dishes were AWESOME. I got mine spicy, which was very HOT. Still the flavor was great and I manged to eat all of the meat and soup. FuFu looked a lot like raw bread dough, but it was the constancy of sticky mashed potatoes. It was bland, but that was not an issue, as it was meant to be dipped into the soup and adsorb the nutty, creamy peanutty flavors.
I will be coming back to this place. The food was unique and very good. And after seeing the plantains and beans and Bean Burger the guy at the next table ordered, I want to eat that!
