Dempsey’s

Sat down with two colleagues. Watched all the tables around us get greeted and get their food. We never got greeted. We got up and left and nobody even acted like they cared.

I ordered a chicken and sausage gumbo when I got it it was cold it had no chicken and hardly any sausage it also had okra when I specifically asked him for no okra and the roux was like a pound of flour I also ordered boudin balls the boudin balls taste like chicken n rice the gumbo was so muddy it left a bad aftertaste in my mouth I talked to the manager and he said well buddy what do you want me to do about it. I told him it was the worst tasting seafood I’ve ever had my life he said our boudin balls is the best in town. I told him no they wasn’t Tony’s is better. he then told me to go eat there then buddy. if you like crappy food or mudy gumbo you’re not from Louisiana Louisiana has taste spices and there are lots of flavor not Dempsey’s the worst restaurant ever in Baton Rouge if you want gumbo go to the jambalaya shop on government St cause Dempsey doesn’t give a damn about quality food.
It’s funny it’s 2015 and dempsey’s is shut down new restaurant there now I guess I wasn’t the only one that didn’t like their service

It was great. Gumbo was AWSOME! Service was quick even though the placed was packed. The food was hot. I would recommend to anyone. The prices are reasonable as well. I will definitely be back. Trying the po boys next time.

Great service and atmosphere. Price is good. However, I thought the gumbo was too salty and the jambalaya tasted strange :/​I didn’t like the food but I might just not know what good gumbo is supposed to taste like. Still worth checking out!

Finally found a place worth writing a positive review about in Baton Rouge. I decided to give this place a try and I’m really glade I did. I decided to get an order to go. I ordered the triple basket. This came with crawfish, shrimp, and catfish with jambalaya and hush puppies. The seafood was well cooked and lightly seseasoned. I prefer this light seasoning to some places that are heavy handed. Especially with the salt. The jambalaya wasn’t really a jambalaya but a good rice dish none the less. The hush puppies were really good and not at all greasy. Good food, service and price I’ll definitely be back.

I am currently writing this review in the restaurant as I am eating my food. I started with the chicken and andouille gumbo and it was excellent. For the main course I got the triple plate of fried crawfish, oyster, and shrimp. However, when my food was brought out I was given catfish in place of the oyster. The crawfish was lightly battered and lacked the crunch and flavor I was expecting. The fried shrimp really wasn’t that flavorful as well. The catfish which is my expertise was not adequately salted but was just fine with some hot sauce. Hush puppies as stated in other reviews were very dry. The bread pudding wasn’t as rich as others I have had in LA. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with my dinner experience.

Stopped in based on Unilocal reviews. The service was excellent, food was good! I really enjoyed my prime rib poboy, took the other half with me. My wife had the seafood stuffed potato. The flavor was good, however when my wife the cheese lover says there’s too much cheese, then there is a problem. The stuffed potato has potato meat extracted, mixed with moray sauce and cheese then replaced, then covered in cheese. Perfectly fried, fresh shrimp accompanied the potato.
While not filthy, the place could use a dust mop to the air vents.
Will return next time through Baton Rouge.

Ordered the Fried ‘Shrooms and a Catfish Poboy. Shrooms came w/​two sauces: one ranch and one «other.» Make sure you use the «other,» it’s really good. Definitely burned by tongue from the juices, so be careful. I knew it was coming, too.
I can’t say much about the Poboy. It is what it is. Should have gotten the gumbo. I don’t like Poboys but I keep ordering them. I knew it was coming, too. I tried my friend’s Seafood Stuffed Potato and it was just really salty. Nothin’ amazing I guess.
Really great service. We got some stares in the restaurant as a party of 10 asians, but it was my only chance at the limelight so I soaked it all in and bowed on the way out.

I’m a Louisiana native, living in Texas, and was visiting Baton Rouge this past week for a few days. My wife and I were desperate for a good hot roast beef po-​boy, and my sister and I went out in search of some good sandwiches to go. Our regular stop was out of both HRB and mufalettas, so we called around and found Dempsey’s on one of our phone apps, and what a GREAT surprise it was.
First of all, the manager, Chris, could not have been nicer, and we put ourselves entirely in his hands as far as specific recommendations. We ordered and ate the HRB, the HRB melt (with cheese), the oyster po-​boy and the shrimp po-​boy, so here’s what we found. The HRB melt and the HRB were literally as good as I can remember having — the French bread was crusty and soft, and really absorbed the delicious gravy that Dempsey’s makes by keeping their HRB in a slow cooker. The oysters and shrimp were perfectly fried and in a nice spicy batter. The lettuce and tomato were unusually fresh and good, so we will definitely be back often when we are in Louisiana. All of the sandwiches were served with a heap of shoe-​string cut, fresh fried potatoes which were cooked to perfection and piping hot when we picked them up.
The only disappointment was that they offer no mufaletta. We will definitely dine-​in next time, because I really should have pictures of these delicious, huge po-​boys. If he’d had a NOLA-​styled muff, I would have definitely rated our dining experience 5 stars.
So, in conclusion, I think all of the sandwiches are excellent, but I would give a slight preference to the HRB melt, which is unusually fine to be found in a seafood restaurant.

The chicken & andouille gumbo is awesome.

I am a Vegan transplanted Cajun who now lives in Dallas Fort Worth. I love me some Dempsey’s. When I go home, I will throw the diet right under the bus. I sit there anxiously waiting for my fried mushrooms with ranch dressing. As I do, I listen to the hum of a restaraunt in a community. where everyone loves good food. They are all piled in together at that Coursey location like sardines in a can, and could care less. Simply because the food is top notch, and worth the wait. and what’s a wait when you are good friends in a great atmosphere. It’s so friendly that you feel like you are all friends, even if you there all alone.

I have never found a restaurant that is so good at everything they make. The menu has a variety of items to choose from that are reasonably priced. I have never had a meal here that I didn’t like. From the appetizers to the dessert… YUM!
Dempsey’s gives you way more food than you will need in one sitting. Every time I leave with a to-​go box for lunch the next day. They give you a complimentary drink to go also. The ENTIRE wait staff is remarkably friendly and helpful if you don’t know what to choose.
So if you are looking for a nice, casual, small restaurant to hangout and have great food try Dempsey’s.

Service was great and on top of taking care of our table. The food was cooked to perfection. We had the shrimp poboys (1 fried and 1 grilled). the fries are fresh and great taste. I would go again.

We checked out Dempsey’s when visiting Baton Rouge last fall. My nephew asked that we go there after a school event, and props to him. He picked a pretty good place. We miss our southern fried food and gumbo, and we were highly satisfied with that of Dempsey’s.
I had the a seafood plate with catfish, shrimp, and oysters. Yum!
I also snagged some of my nephew’s gumbo, It was really good. I highly recommend getting the gumbo. I wish I had some here in Cali.
The food I had was not too complicated or fancy, but it’s a solid place to grab a bite to eat. Check it out.

A friend told me they have some of the best po boys in town here. Wow he was right. Try the oyster po boys it is amazing!
It’s a casual feeling when you walk into the door. The wait staff greet you right away and from there you just keep feeling welcome.
The menu is pretty simple: traditional no frill Louisiana cuisine.
They have everything from Etouffe, and Gumbo to PoBoys. (again try to the oyster po boys!!)
I’ve tried all of their po boys and they are top notch.
The gumbo was just so– so.
All in all it’s a great place to hit if you have a po-​boy craving.

Had a po-​boy from their food truck. The girl who took my order was really sweet and got my name right the first time (miracle) lol. The catfish po-​boy however, was just meh! The bread was old and the fish pretty flavorless. I asked if they could grill/​toast my bread. While they had no means to toast it (understandable), she said they would grill it — but it wasn’t grilled. sigh!
My co-​worker loved the loaded potato though, so maybe I will try that next time. Another co-​worker had the shrimp Po-​boy. When asked, he simply shrugged his shoulders and was like. meh! I’ve had better!

I continue to be a Dempsey’s fan. Last night the restaurant was pretty empty. It was gameday and most patrons were at home, watching the match on TV. That was perfect because we got to have a leisurely chat with the manager and found out about their special chocolate flan… a specialty that the restaurant plans to introduce soon. When hubby ordered his chicken mornay without a side of the stuffed potato it usually comes with, the manager offered to give us extra chicken! Hubby ended up asking for hush puppies, but I loved the offer. In these days of cutbacks and aggressive bottomlines, it was nice to see someone actually caring about the customer.

First time in Louisiana and I wanted to see what this «po-​boy» business is all about.
I ordered the craw fish po-​boy and a cup of their seafood gumbo. The gumbo didn’t look appetizing, looked like pasty red beans and rice but it tasted amazing! Chunks of crawfish, chopped oyster or maybe clam and some other stuff.
The craw fish po-​boy was pretty tasty too. Everything down to the bread and lettuce seemed fresh.
Highly recommend stopping by. It’s clean, the staff is friendly and the waitress I had was super cute too.

Fried food haven. Dempsey’s is a good poboy shop overall. I’ve tried several things on their menu: anything from a poboy to the fried entrees to soup. Their soups are usually cream of something but they’re always hot and always reliably decent. Just a few complaints: They use WAY too much salt. The boudin balls appetizer was so briney I couldn’t eat them and had to throw them away. Same for the Fried Crawfish Tails. I love crawfish so this really upset me that they ruined my crawfish! The Seafood Gumbo is decent and tastey. It’s somewhat thick like stew, if you like your gumbo like that, and the meats in the gumbo were still moist. I like my gumbo a bit soupy, the way gumbo consistency should be. Their french fries are definitely nothing to write home about. Usually they are not crispy, but floppy to potatoey dry. The Stuffed Potato was really tastey but too small for the price they charge.
Fried Catfish are really really good here! No fishy muddy taste, just fresh white fish meat with a golden fried cornmeal crust. Really really good. Their Fried Shrimp are really good as well. Decently sized shrimp, and they make an EXCELLENT poboy! The Shrimp Poboy is really good and comes dressed with tomato and lettuce and mayo (typical poboy dressings). Bread for the poboy was a tad bit dry but the flat french bread used for poboys and it has an outter crispy crust with the inner chewy bread. Oddly enough, my most favorite thing from this restaurant is something no one would expect. It’s the Vegetable of the Day: Broccoli Cauliflower mix. I don’t know what they do to these vegetables but they have such a YUMMY taste to them. I think they steam them and drizzle them with butter or a rich olive oil. Whatever they do, they do not over salt them and they have some sort of yum factor to them. I never get excited over vegetables like that but these are top notch! Their salads are pretty typical. Disappointingly, they only use Iceburg lettuce which I guess is cheaper for them, but less healthy for me. I prefer the darker types of lettuce such as Greenleaf or Romaine. Regardless, the salads are pretty decent. They have really good bleu cheese dressing, not as high quality as an expensive restaurant, but still really good. The Grilled Chicken plate is decent but the chicken itself borders on being dry. It’s not dry, but borders on it.
The hushpuppies are kind of pitiful. If they only had some more flavor and they used some sort of buttermilk in the recipe to keep them moist when frying them, they wouldn’t be so bad, but they are dry as well. No flavor and dry. The poboys I have tried are: Fried Shrimp, Fried Crawfish, and the French Dip which is a really good French Dip… excellent actually.
So those are my good and bad points. It’s mostly a pick and choose place. Some good things, some bad things. They always serve hot food though so that is a plus in my book. I’ve only had takeout and not eaten in the restaurant. But the service on the phone is very nice, helpful, informative, and patient. They’ll answer any questions you have and tweak your order to whichever way you want it. That is also a plus in my book. If they would work on the dryness of the food (overcooking it or drying it out under heatlamps) and reduce the salt in their batters for fried items, this place would have more business. Overall they are a good poboy shop to try. I still have more things I’d like to try on their menu and when I do, I’ll write an updated review. Till then, only 3 stars.

I went here for lunch today. We both had the shrimp poboy and half a cup. The gumbo was classic. Dempsey’s definitely lived up to its reputation.
