The reviews are 100% spot on. The prices are ridiculous, the cars are old and the driver smelled like cigarettes. Do yourself a favor and stay away from David and Tommys taxi this place is highway robbery. The only reason why they even scored a 2 is the lady who dispatched the driver to me was nice. Warning download the ap and call a car it will be cheaper, new and won’t sound like its about to break down.

Shockingly bad. Rude, aggressive and a complete rip-​off.

How about this for an awful travel experience…
My 5-​month pregnant wife books a ride from the ferries to Manhattan scheduled to leave at 6:50AM. When she gets off the boat there is no van so she calls the dispatcher and is told to come to the office. When she arrives there she is told that they canceled the van and that they called her to tell it was canceled — which they never did. Ok, why did they tell her to come to the office? She is, understandably, upset as it is early in the morning and is trying to get to work and tells them that this is not the way to run a business. One would think this is where an apology is in order. But no… they are incredibly short with her, rude and combative and as she walks out the door one of them tells her that he «HOPES THAT OUR CHILD IS BORN BACKWARDS»! This is a direct quote! While this dumb, rude, chauvinist of a man probably doesn’t have the first clue about childbirth, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t meant out of kindness or, surely, as an apology. This is not how anyone, not to mention a pregnant woman in need of a ride, should be treated. Our family will never take Tommy’s Taxi again regardless but either way this man should be fired. I would suggest anyone reading this review to take the train, get a different service or walk because this business is, apparently, run by a bunch of neanderthals. By the way, if you want to to know which one the guy is, I’m not exactly sure, all I know is my wife said he was, literally, one of the ugliest people she had ever seen on the planet earth. Maybe that’s why he’s so angry.
Bottom line: Tommy’s Taxi’s business should be shut down.

Did Your Ancestors Travel to New York City in Steerage? Now You Can Too!
Fall 2012. Bay Shore to New York. Driver, 13 adult passengers wearing sweaters or coats, one dog, numerous pieces of luggage — in a van. For the inevitable result, see photos.
At the ferry terminal, a dispatcher named Chris was trying to decide whether to use one van or divide us into two. He concluded that 13 would fit just fine in one van. Possibly this is a number in the van’s specifications. More likely, Chris just hates us. Seriously, he seems to.
Main memories of this particular trip:
* Driver cheerfully jamming luggage in anywhere it would fit, mostly along the aisle next to the door, blocking entry and exit. Is this even legal? For me to get out at the end of the trip, driver had to open the side door from outside and remove four or five bags piled up between me and the door — no exaggeration.
* Impossible to move at all. Spent the whole trip hip-​to-​hip with a woman I had never met. I suppose it’s a way to make new friends. On the plus side, I was wedged in so tightly that I probably didn’t need a seatbelt. On the minus side, there was no way to put on a seatbelt had I wanted to. Overall, a combination of the worst aspects of the New York City subway and the Long Island Expressway.
* No legroom (and I’m barely 5’10″). Felt my knees against the seat in front the whole trip.
* Cost: $ 26. They wisely collect the fare before stuffing the luggage on top of the passengers. If they collected later, people would be unable to move enough to access their wallets. Or they might refuse to pay.
* Effect of this van ride on my relaxed mood after a weekend on Fire Island: pretty much killed it.
Additional thoughts: I am reliably informed by regular travelers that this is standard operating procedure for Tommy’s. Whether they use a van or a bus, they make sure that it is packed to maximum capacity, far beyond what is comfortable for passengers.
The train is only $ 11, so you could take a more comfortable trip into the city and use the $ 15 difference to take a cab from Penn Station. No one likes Penn Station either, but least you’re only there for one or two minutes, not one or two hours.
Update: I’ve added a photo from a ride on 9÷14÷2015, showing all passenger exits blocked. It’s a van, with no exits on the left except for the driver’s door in the front seat. On the right, there is a passenger door in the front seat and a sliding door for other rows. Neither is accessible. There is even more luggage in the way than the bags pictured. Also, part of the passenger side window in the front seat is obscured, preventing the driver from seeing properly in that direction. Tommy’s and its passengers seem to be lucky so far, but before boarding, make sure you hug your loved ones and give them any final words of advice. You could be headed for a different destination than expected.

I would use Comfort Inn Island wide. The first driver from Tommy’s Taxi offered us $ 50 from Bay Shore Ferry to Ronkonkoma then raised it to $ 60 as we got into the van! We declined, asked another Tommy’s driver who started at $ 60 and then dropped to $ 50 after realizing he was losing customers.
Fact is, the ride is a flat $ 33 with Islandwide, and additionally the dispatch will tell the customer the price upfront. Plus, its a car not a van.

It’s nice of them to offer shuttle service between the LIRR and the trains. However, it’s probably a mile/​10 minute walk, and purely capitalistic on their part since at $ 5/​person they make a ton I’m sure. (Plus you’ll wait a good 5 – 10 minutes just to get the shuttle loaded up with as many people will fit, when you could walk halfway there by then…).
Outside of that, their taxi prices are insanity.
A taxi ride between Bay Shore (either the LIRR terminal, or the ferry, it doesn’t matter) and the Islip airport will run you $ 46+tip (so… $ 50 if you’re being cheap on the tip). It’s not far. It’s a 15 minute cab ride, 12 miles in distance (mostly on the main highway). $ 50. That’s probably the most expensive cab ride I’ve seen anywhere. It’s a flat rate, and non-​negotiable. I had a driver once make it in about 10 minutes by speeding on the highway, after my flight was late and I needed to catch the last ferry of the night (I tipped him generously for his effort).
They’ve got you by the balls though, there’s no other way between ISP and the LIRR/​ferry. (There is a bus going from ISP to the nearby Ronkonkoma LIRR stop if you’re going into NYC, but that doesn’t run on Sunday and runs hourly during limited hours on other days, and it’s the wrong location altogether going to Bay Shore)
This weekend I took a cab and they made it seem like they were doing me a favor by throwing me into a cab with someone else going to a different place, saying they were reallllly busy and everyone else had reservations. I highly doubt that… But they threw me in with some weirdo girl who parked her Daewoo at aunt Sally’s somewhere halfway between the ferry and the airport. She happened to see Aunt Sally driving down the road as we were about halfway there, insisting we needed to follow her… since well, she could only be going home right? All the while, every time we were at a stop light the girl waived ferociously for Dear Aunt to see her… She wasn’t doing it because she wanted a ride to save her money, she just was really looking to say hi. As she pulled into the grocery store my fellow passenger got quiet and said «oh, guess she isn’t home» … What a fun ride. After unsuccessfully jabbing my eyes out, we roamed on to ISP airport.
I don’t know if the high prices are a result of too much regulation (only a few places licensed?) or lack of regulation… There are other places offering car and cab service, but they all use the same flat rate, and more importantly they all seem to be somehow related to one another (I know Tommy’s runs other companies, or shows up in cars with other names on them). If you’re a cab driver and wanting to make more money than the passengers you’re transporting, come to Long Island!
