Beaver Dam Cafe

Stopped in on my way between traveling. I was greeted by a very sweet woman, who didn’t even mind that I stayed about two hours (doing work). Tried a great desert. It is a very cute diner and friendly staff.

When wrapping up a couple days of travel, I was ready to get home. However, I was also feeling like greasy food might not be my best bet. Instead of fast food, I wanted to try out something local. I had bookmarked this spot on Unilocal and stopped in.
It wasn’t very crowded the Tuesday I went (I even overheard one of the ladies working comment they were «dead»…), but there was plenty of space, and I can imagine this might be the best lunch spot in Beaver Dam. The menu wasn’t overwhelming but still had plenty of options; it seemed like fried green tomatoes were a popular item there. There was a specials menu on the wall with even more than the menu offered.
Service here was great from the minute I walked in. My server didn’t bombard me, but she kept my glass of water full, offered dessert at the end (tempting, but no room), and was very pleasant.
I opted for the «Not Your Mama’s Grilled Cheese” – but really wanted the pimento, so they added that on for me as well. Mmmm… very well cooked and not greasy. I also went with the lima beans (instead of the chips), which were a special.
If I lived or frequented the area more often, I’d definitely go back here. If it were at home in Louisville, I’d probably only give this spot four stars, but given the location and drastic lack of other options, I’m going with five stars. (Maybe that extra star is for the menu’s option named after hometown hero/​Louisville Cardinal Logan Baumann… Go Cards!)

We were visiting the area on a family genealogy tour. After finding the remains of my wife’s great grandfathers original home near the lock by Rochester on the green river, we ended up driving through Beaver Dam. We drove past the Beaver Dam Café on our way out of town. My mother in law saw the café and told us she used to eat there in the 1950’s. I turned around and found a parking spot right out front. The history of this place is amazing, it was a hotel and café since 1921. The owner and staff filled us in on the history and the owner gave us a tour of the old hotel rooms upstairs! This place would make a good bed and breakfast!
The food was wonderful, my father in law had the Manhattan sandwich, great! My mother in law had the fried green tomato sandwich, excellent! My wife had the Kentucky blue moon with fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese and grape jelly on white bread, sounds strange but it was delicious! I had the cheese steak and it was the best ever! They have an original sauce called «kayo» sauce, yum, yum! We had real ice cream milkshakes from the original milkshake machine that was there in the 50’s. We took our dessert to go and I’m sure it will be delicious! Overall this place should get 6 stars, best lunch in Kentucky! Thanks for the hospitality!

The history of the building itself makes it a tourist attraction for anyone visiting Ohio County. However the menu is the real reason to have lunch. The staple of the place is the «Blue Moon of Kentucky» sandwich, and I don’t know how this works but it does. Wheatberry toast, blueberry jam, house made pimento cheese and… wait for it… Fried Green Tomatoes! And the chicken tenders are nice and juicy too. The staff is friendly and the owners are in the restaurant daily. If you plan to visit Ohio County, this little diner is a can’t miss!

I can vaguely recall coming in the Beaver Dam Café as a small child. Smoke. I remember a lot of smoke. You’d never tell it now. Terri said she took three years to renovate. I tell you, you’d never tell this was the old smoky place. Clean, Fresh, and Cozy Dining Area. New and Creative Menu items to choose from with a Few Hometown Favorites! Like the «Go Big Blue Burger» for the UK fans and a «Logan Baumann Grilled Chicken Sandwich» named for UL’s NCAA Hometown Basketball Champion. It may seem like just a play on words, but after one bite you will see the food is a favorite with a twist. So if you are in the Great Beaver Dam area, try Lunch here. Enjoy!
