If you’re looking for local, fresh options, they deliver. I had their smoked pork chops and they were quite amazing. When ordering items, they vacuum seal the portions to retain freshness, make storage and portioning easier, and they freeze much better. Staff were attentive and prompt when I was in the very tiny Beaverton shop. The only problem though is that these guys are far too expensive.$ 6.00 per pound for bone-​in smoked pork chop. Retail average as per USDA is $ 2.00 cheaper and boneless is $ 1.70 more in your wallet. Yes, Ponderosa smokes these and that comes at an expense, but are they really 50% better or need to be that much higher? My opinion is not.

My review is solely based on service not products. I called to inquire about something, over a week with no response. Two phone calls today, still no answer but was offered another call back. I needed to get something done and couldn’t get a straight answer. Sadly I obtained what I needed from another butcher who was able to answer my questions on the first call. Maybe I will try again in the future

When I was a kid, my parents would load us up in the car for a 45 minute journey to the west side of Phoenix into an honestly dumpy part of Glendale to pick up half a dead cow. It came in boxes full of white paper wrapped packages and filled our extra freezer. My dad ate beef three meals a day. Kidney and eggs for breakfast, burgers for lunch, potroasts for dinner. It was the 70s. He has since had quintuple bypass surgery (think thats related?) But is also still kicking at 87.
Ponderosa Provisioners would be my dad’s kind of place. Its a small unassuming outpost in a not glossy part of Aloha off TV highway near the train tracks. It has a case of fresh meat, a couple refrigerators full of sausage and ground meats, a few shelves of rubs and sauces, a desk with a scale and a cash register… it smells like the butcher shop in Phoenix smelled. Raw meat smell.
A couple chalkboards list their extensive offerings and the cost per pound.
I made a quick trip in the other day for some Carlton Farms brats and a pork shoulder roast. (here its called pork butt). The guy waiting on me disappeared into the back and came out with two pork butts, one boneless and one bone in, so I could choose.
I took both. What the heck, I will freeze one. They are nicely vacuum packed.
The bone in one is going into the crockpot with beer, cumin, and Hatch chiles. Sort of a Janet version of my mom’s pot roast. My dad would be horrified by the chiles but approve of Ponderosa.
They had a lot of beautiful lamb, elk, and beef too. I will come back in for some of that next time probably.
No kidneys though. I will leave them there for you:)

I bought meat here two times. The quality was excellent. The meat is really good. I bbq’ed it and also cooked it in the oven.
Try their sweetbreads next time you do bbq, are expensive but really worth it.

By way of preface, first let me indicate that I never bought their meats so I cannot comment on the quality of their fresh products. I went there specifically for their jerky products. I was disappointed in the jerky because it was vacuum pre-​packaged in small 3 – 4 oz bags in the commercial style, and they used sodium sulfite. Two of the primary ingredients were salt and sugar. I had been looking for bulk jerky without chemical preservatives, and with more natural ingredients, in the way some other meat shops in the Portland area make and sell jerky. I can buy chemical jerky at Costco and 7 – 11. So I have not purchased from Ponderosa, and I will not. Other than that, this is a very small place and all their fresh meats seem to be pre-​packaged.

Was looking for a place to buy a pork shoulder for super bowl pulled pork. Found this place on Unilocal.Was happily suprised to get an excellent piece of meat at a price similar to the grocery store.

I will hold on the fifth star until I have dined on our prime rib. The meat counter is not large, the bulk of the building seems to be geared towards handling the product. As it should be, in my opinion. It was my first time there and they are very friendly. Asked me how I was preparing the cut, when I explained my plan, the gentleman was very cordial but I could tell he had other thoughts. He suggested a dry rub and to keep it simple. I will follow his lead so that fifth star is on you kind sir.

1^st time here and purchased a 2lb prime T-​bone steak along with some ground beef. The reason why T-​bone is my favorite cut is that it contains 2 cuts of meat (tenderloin and strip). However, i paid $ 34 dollars for a T-​Bone that barely had the tenderloin.(see the pictures). I brought it up with Rob and he explained that the tenderloin is in demand and he is in short supply and thus the reason. He did say the cut he gave me «barely met ponderosa’s standards». I wish he would’ve told me that before I paid for a «T-​Bone» that was actually a strip steak with a bone. Rob did offer to give me a 15% discount on my next purchase. However, I’m gonna give another top rated Unilocal butcher shop a try first before deciding to go back. I will say the steak was extremely tasty. They do offer grass fed beef here as well so that’s a plus. Everyone here seems nice as well.

Tried these guys out for some Memorial Day bbq meat. The gal behind the counter was helpful in picking out the right kind of beef for kabobs, and the butcher in the back cut the exact amount I needed, since it wasn’t available in the case in front. All the meat is vacuum sealed in plastic, but that probably just keeps it fresh longer. They have just about every cut of meat you could want, including flat iron steaks, hanger steaks, and quite an assortment of bacon. It was a long drive there for me, but if I’m stocking up and freezing the meat, I think the drive is worth it for the higher quality meats. Prices were about the same as Whole Foods, but the quality is a lot better. The flavor of the meat was excellent, and there was very little extra fat or gristle to trim off. I’m a fan!

Customer service is top notch! Was very friendly and helpful. They have a wide variety of selection of meats and different cuts. We ordered the porchetta for Easter and our guests were so impressed by the presentation and quality. Everyone was fighting over the last piece! Will definitely be returning again!

Great little butcher. Incredibly fresh and tastes so much better then buying from the regular grocery store.

I never buy beef, pork, or any red meat anywhere else given the choice. I love this place. They will cut just to my specifications, have tons of high quality meat in stock whenever I go, and are always cheerful.
I’ve even bought and really enjoyed their all beef hot dogs; they taste like I remember from my childhood, which is simply amazing to me. I now think that dogs from most places even smell wrong!

Okay… I have to say this man has magic meat!!! I am convinced that the pork comes from magical flying pigs that live under rainbows. The beef is equally as wonderful. I have been here many times and this is primarily where I get my meat now. His prices are very comparable to the grocery stores.
I have talked to him on many occasions, he answers all my questions, gives me suggestions and has a large, large selection to chose from. The meat is fresh, the selection is huge oh and it is yummy. You really can taste the difference with this meat. I dont like prepackaged store meat anymore.

Went here for the first time yesterday and I am in love. Sorry, Costco, we’ve found our new butcher! Came here for a great price on fatty meat for our new GSD pup but soon realized that this place will be our new place for lean beef for people… as well as a decadent array of other savory meats/​meals.
Don’t know their names yet, but two men happily greeted me as I arrived and even pet my new pup for a moment outside. I left with 3 pounds of ⁸⁰⁄₂₀ beef and two raw beef bones that the pup is obsessed with, all for under $ 12.00. My boyfriend and I are very impressed by the look of the beef and our pup is devouring it.
So glad I read these reviews and ventured to a town I hardly ever travel to (Aloha). I am so excited about this place that I am bringing my boyfriend back today to introduce him. Yesterday I eyed some brats that I think we will take home today…

On the wrong side of the train tracks.
My husband first noticed this shop as we were cruising down TV highway. He’s an amateur photographer and thought the market’s exterior was worthy of a photo shoot. That was over two years ago, and we’ve been meaning to go in and buy some meat ever since.
I’m not a huge meat eater, and I really don’t trust the stuff they serve in most supermarkets (not you New Seasons, I trust you baby girl), so I was happy to oblige my husband’s idea of getting some quality meat from Ponderosa to grill up with some veggies. You enter the shop on the left side of the building, and the meat counter is teeny tiny. But no matter, it looked clean and the meat was displayed with care. Once grilled and on the table, we and our guests were pretty quiet because we were too busy enjoying that tasty, tasty meat. Great quality and cut! Prime does make a difference.
The staff were super friendly, and they gave us a sheet with all of their cuts w/​prices and let us know we can always call ahead with an order and they’ll have it ready when we walk in the door. If I’m ever in the mood for meat I’ll be giving them a call!

This is one of those places I’d rather not anyone know about, so just tell the people you really like and leave the bozos in the dark.
Ponderosa carries a full range of grades always custom cut to your specifications. If they don’t have it, they’ll get it for you. Friendly and helpful service. I’ve gone in to buy three filets and was treated no differently from when I was walking in with a box to fill my freezer. They’re also willing to pack up your purchases however you like.
P. s. — I’m not sure why people have marked this place as expensive. For the cuts you’re getting the prices are excellent. Just taking flank steak as an example, I don’t think I’ve seen their price get above 60−70% of what you’d pay anywhere else in town (including Costco).

Can I just say GRASS FED Beef, which is all I am allowed to buy these days, they have a bunch of it, from grass fed burger to steaks of all kinds. They carry both Choice and Prime. They also carry Pork, yes Carlton Farms Pork, Poultry, Lamb, Buffalo, Veal and just about anything else you can think of.
I have purchased custom cuts of Prime Rib here previously, but I did not realize they had so much to offer and it is vacuum packed for easy freezing and will last a lot longer packaged that way. (trust me)
The staff behind the counter are super helpful and knowledgeable, nice to boot!
Instead of buying a ¼ of a Beef this year, I will just be stopping by Ponderosa for my needs!

Having grown weary of ye olde supermarket cut of steak, I was interested in something of a higher caliber. I’ve spied Ponderosa from across the railroad tracks (read: traveling down TV highway) many, many times. Well, I finally had the opportunity to pull the trigger.
Like others (notably Bob M.) have noted, the place is tiny. You walk in the front door and BAM, there’s the meat counter. The cuts of steak are nicely displayed and clearly labeled. There’s a freezer (?) to the right, which houses some of their other meats. I think I noticed some buffalo/​bison (which is it, anyway?) in there, and if that’s the case, I definitely need to return. The gal at the counter was friendly and helpful. There’s really nothing more to explain about the visit to the store itself — It’s small. They carry quality meats. They were friendly. Boom.
I grabbed a prime ribeye. I wanna say the price at the time was $ 16 per pound. I smoked it on my Traeger for a half hour, jacked up the heat to 450 and seared it for about 4 minutes per side. Despite the fact that the Traeger is not optimal for the «perfect» steak, this one turned out nicely. Medium rare to rare with a nice smoke ring, I was impressed.
I’m looking forward to sampling other cuts of meat at Ponderosa, and as always, I’m proud to support a local business, which these guys certainly are.
