Michael’s School of Hair Design and Esthetics

I went here today with very high expectations. The school exceeded them!
Everyone was extremely nice! There were students with their clients, students in classes, a fundraiser going on, and the school was so busy! I spoke to some Teachers, who really took the time to speak with me about what they do and how important it is for students to learn. Everyone has a different learning style and they accommodate that.
I had already applied for government funding-​so, I met with the financial planner and saw how much I got in funding and grants. I’m all covered, which got me even more excited!
I set a date to come back and fill out the application, so I can start my cosmetology career! I’m very excited! Wouldn’t want it anywhere else!

I went to school at Michael’s 10 years ago. I really enjoyed going there and have worked in 3 salons in 10 years, I’m currently on my 8^th year at a great salon in Nashua NH! I met a lot of very nice girls at hair school and I still keep in contact with them today!
So I decided that I was going to treat myself with a manicure today. I have a 7 month old baby and hardly ever get to have «me time».
I called the salon last minute and asked if they had any openings. The woman that answered the phone was really nice and told me that if I wanted a pedicure I could have a manicure for free! I was really excited! ($ 23 total). I got there and a very nice girl names Stephanie took me right away. I told her I was on a little bit of a time crunch and she was very accommodating and made sure that she got me out at the time I had asked.
My nails may not be perfect, but I really had a good time and it was so nice to talk to someone that is going to school to be in the same field as I am in. I was happy that I got to offer her a little bit of advice to.
I will definitely be going back!
I also recommend to anyone reading this…: if you are planning on going to the school to get a service it’s probably best to not be in a rush or have very high expectations ., the students are learning … And everyone has to start somewhere !!

I got my eye brows waxed here and I was scared that they would make them too thin but they did a perfect job and she took her time to make them come out great! Ill definitely be coming back!

I’m“m writing this as a customer…
First I will say that the place is under-​construction and in a small but popular strip mall. My appointment was early morning so I had plenty of parking. When I left though, the lot was packed!
The reception area was done and very spacious. The wash station area was also done and very spacious. It even had tip sinks, no more kinks in your neck while getting your hair washed! The salon area though was done but not fully set up and I found it a bit cramped with the students salon kits and general stuff… one really needs to pick up ones own feet!
The skin department was closed due to renovation and they were not accepting any customers until November (currently it’s June)
Well my appointment was for a perm… and long awaited and in desperate need of! The young lady I had, this was her second time doing this but she was paired up with another young lady that had done several perm. I was a little leery but I’ll do it again, as the teachers were their every step of the process and even wrote down on the mirror what the student needed to do along the way.
If you go in with an open and the fact that if you are not happy with what you got, heck it grows back in a month or so!
The costs were very low as it should be for a teaching school. In the past I have had it done at Walmart for a cost of $ 50-​$ 60. This place was $ 35… CANT BEAT THAT
I AM VERY HAPPY with my results and I look forward to the Esthetics department being open in the fall.
I will SURELY DO THIS AGAIN!
PS: they do take walk-​ins. But from my understanding, they will only do cuts and some waxings as a walk in.

I’m writing this review based on being a student at the school and not a client. I think this school has a bit of growing up to do. The teachers were super cliquey, kind of snobby, and REALLLLLy inexperienced. Some of their teachers have had NO real world experience, something that I feel is essential in teaching kids how to do hair. They hired several teachers right out of school! I don’t get that… And I get that it’s hair school and there’s always going to be drama, but it seems as though the people in charge are willing to do nothing about ending the drama. Paul Mitchell education is TOP NOTCH, in my opinion, and not all of the teachers there were idiots. There are some really smart educators that I still keep in contact with and adore. I don’t think I regret my choice to go to this school because I love what I’ve learned and I still use this stuff today. But I also know that I wasted quite a few more G’s going here when I’ve heard amazing things about Empire.

Firstly, the mall this school is in is under HEAVY construction, and despite the fact that I used to work in the same mall, I had a bit of a hard time finding the right place to park and enter the building.
BUT a visit to this hair design school is VERY worth it. The school is clean, well lit, and the students give off a trendy but friendly vibe. The music is contemporary but mostly in the background, and while there are many students it is certainly not cramped or crowded. The waiting room is small but I did not wait more than a few minutes even though I was early for my appointment.
Siobhan was my hair stylist, and she did an amazing job achieving and perfecting the haircut I’ve been trying to get from various hairdressers and hair schools for about 2 years now. She was bubbly and friendly but not crazy-​chatty or over the top, and obviously loves what she does. She graduates at the end of August 2011, but I will be trying to make another appointment with her before then and will gladly follow her to where ever she sets up shop afterward.
$ 11 dollars got me a shampoo and conditioning (both of which, may I add, not only smelled awesome because of the Michael’s products, but were also crazy relaxing thanks to Siobhan’s scalp-​massaging talents), cut, AND blow dry/​style. I will admit I’m usually very cheap when it comes to haircuts, but I would have paid whatever Siobhan was charging for the full experience and the final outcome.
If you have an hour or two to relax and get an awesome haircut, brave the construction this parking lot is going through and stop by this school.

So if anyone is ever interested in going to Michael’s school in Bedford NH dont! Even if its close to your home, its nothing but fake people and lies. Never mind in order to meet with financial aid or even find out about the school you have to pay $ 150. The financial aid does nothing for you unless you have rich parents that are going to pay everything for you. Do yourself a favor and look at other schools and you will realize how horrible Michael’s is.
So heres my lovely experience.
I met with Dottie in admissions who had that valley girl fake speech and tilting of the head. Which I’m sorry but that indicates stupidity. Then I find out when sitting with her that I can get a tour of the building and a free quick up-​do. Which I had.
But at that point I thought I would get some info on the curriculum, cost, and financing options ect. When I asked about this I was asked for $ 150 dollars. I was stupid enough to pay thinking all school were like this and it would be a in depth meeting. Well no not at all. I sat with financial aid who had the same tilting head action when speaking in a high pitched tone. While that was annoying the first words out of her mouth was «this wont take long», which I automatically knew this was a mistake. She applied online to
, which is a federal pell grant and she then says «oh your borderline, you don’t qualify for any money», so I asked what she meant by borderline. All she could say was «oh I don’t know. they do there thing. whatever it is. and make there decision». In the end I was qualified for 2 federal stafford loans in the amount of $ 7500 (which is not based on your credit). So in the end she tells me I need to come but with $ 10,000 in one week in order to attend. That my only options is to get a Sallie Mea Loan with a co-​signer (which depends on credit) I walk out with one hand written piece of paper and no info on any other options. Its been about a month since then and I’ve been calling her with a few questions and I cannot get a call back from this horrible school.
I have since looked at 6 different schools in MA and NH and not one has asked for $ 150 in order to get all the info about the school. I had so much fun talking to the people at these other school and not a single one was as falky as people at Michaels and everyone gave me so much info. I left each school with a smile because people were real and down to earth. I also get my phone calls returned promptly along with emails with more info. Anyways, I made my decision on which school I’m going to attend and its Catherine Hinds School of Esthetics in Woburn Mass. It has 20,000 square feet and 300,600,900 and 1200 hours programs. Im interested in 1200 hours at 15,000 which ill be certified as a Master Esthetician in spa and medical esthetics. The financial aid office was great. The women there gave me every piece of info I was looking for and I can get 2 stafford loans for around 11,000. She also is going to try harder to get me a federal pell grant because I just got laid off from my job. So that leaves me with around 5,000 I have to get. I have 2 options, which is pay directly to the school for 10 months in payments monthly of $ 500 or try to get a loan for that amount (which I would need a co-​signer for) but I did find out that if I get a co-​signer after 2 years of paying the loan off I can take the co-​sign off. Which is a great option!
So anyone looking to go to Esthetics school in Mass go to Catherine Hinds its the best and in NH The Institute of Esthetics in Concord NH.
