For over 50 years, Holwager, Byers, & Caughey has served the legal needs of Beech Grove and the greater Indianapolis area. Our office traces its roots to Joseph E. Holwager who was born and raised near Madison, Indiana. As a young man, Joe served in the United States Navy during World War II as a medic and his unit saw combat in Guadalcanal. It was there that Joe was awarded the Silver Star for his courage and bravery in action by assisting in the rescue of injured officers. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Joe worked for the Marion County Department of Health as the Director of Vital Records. Every so often we even find a client whose birth certificate bears Joe’s signature from his tenure at the department. In 1961, Joe graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. Two years later, he opened his own law firm at 405 South Main Street in Beech Grove. During the late 1960’s, Bud Harrell joined Joe and the two practiced law as «Holwager & Harrell» until 1981 when Bud retired. In 1980, Joe’s son, William (Bill) Holwager, graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis and joined his father in the practice of law. Thereafter in 1982 the office’s name was changed to «Holwager and Holwager». Joe died in 1987, and the following year Bill relocated his law practice from 405 South Main Street to the present location of the office on the corner of 18^th and Main in Beech Grove.
