We’ve shopped here multiple times over the last 5 years — that have a pretty good stock though much of what they sell has to be ordered. Customer service however has seriously gone down hill recently. Most recently we’ve been trying to get some faulty hardware replaced from a batch ordered for a remodel– both of the staff members who were ‘helping’ us were pretty rude, never followed up or called us. Will have to order replacements elsewhere and will not come back here!

Very friendly and helpful sales people. They are busy most of the time (try not to go on weekends). The hardware is several grades above what you will find in other hardware stores.

Wow. I went here looking for a new lock set for my front door with drawings and photos so I could find a mortise lock set that fit the old holes. The guy who helped me was condescending. Not sure how they stay in business. He didn’t want to help and suggested I get a locksmith because he didn’t want to risk selling me something that I would return. um that was the point of bringing drawings and photos. And he has no idea what I know how to do. I went here because one of my clients (when I was a handyman) bought w houseful of doorknobs and had me pick them up. I remembered they had a great selection. Go and look, then shop online. What a jerk. Still fuming.
I subsequently went to Hundley hardware in San Francisco. They gave much better customer service and nearly the same selection. Staff are nice and knowledgeable. Followed up with two calls to make sure the order was correct and would arrive in time.

Amazing assortment of handles here. the service was good. I had a few people ask me if they could help, and when I asked a question it was answered competently. My take is that this is a specialty place and indeed they have a fantastic amount of inventory. I haven’t bought anything from here but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m back.

One star for poor customer service. Someone must have told them to acknowledge customers who were waiting for service because I heard repeatedly, «someone will be with you shortly» The displays are plentiful but many of the bins were empty, missing parts or screws, and none were priced. After waiting over 20 minutes at the counter to be rung up, while watching employees appear and disappear, I left the item and the store. I get better service at the «big box» and smaller hardware stores. This is the second visit to Belmont Hardware with a similar poor customer service experience. No thank you, Belmont Hardware.

One Saturday morning, I stopped inside Belmont Hardware with my SF Giants Build-​A-​Bear Panda because its hat kept falling off its head. I asked the guy at the cash register (I don’t know his name.)if he could solve my problem, and he quickly managed to put its hat right back in place, and it hasn’t been falling off ever since. Thank you Belmont Hardware!

Lack of diversity in finishes. The store feels cold and sterile for some reason. I went looking for a towel bar and the selection is about the same as Orchard Supply.

We ordered handles, hooks, TP holder and other items from here. To be fair the clerk was brand new (it was his first day), but after assuring us the order would arrive within 3 weeks and then eventually receiving it after 8 only to discover the entire order was wrong (color and finish), we were not off to a good start.
The order was re-​submitted and 3 weeks later we received all the wrong things again. Next time after calling 2 weeks after re-​re-​placing the order we were advised they had ‘forgotten’ to do it… so here we are — 4+ months on and we just received the items! Put it down to an inexperienced clerk, a premium Italian company supplying the parts, or just poor management but the store did not do a poor job.
However…they have the best selection in the Bay Area and can get pretty much anything you need, the prices seem ‘OK’ and the staff are pretty helpful at finding you the right parts for the job.
So, 3* as they need to really improve the customer service and order management, but have a great range.

Just rebuilt our house and needed knobs, pulls, etc. They do have a good selection, but the customer service here is AWFUL! Bottom line, the attitude is that they are doing you a favor by selling you their products. Not sure if the other location is any better, but I would not come back here.

maybe its because i really hate what the home depots and lowes are doing to the contracting business (selling subpar products as cheap as possible while limiting your options as well) or maybe its because i actually understand how the contracting world works… but i love this place.
its quite odd how people feel entitled to four seasons level service everywhere you go.
if you want someone holding your hand through the process while serving you lattes, hire an interior design firm. let them charge you a premium for the service they offer.
for the rest of us, let us get the work done.
we happened to stumble on this place and i am extremely happy we did.
no price tag? yes, some place you need to get the more current pricing. infrastructure not to you liking? then go to home depot where you have inexperienced, underpaid staff selling you crap materials, but have the latest in checkout technologies… including self check out! (since human staff members are expensive). youre getting quotes. simple. you tell them what you want, how many and they check current pricing.
this place has the most extensive selection pulls and knobs ive ever seen. from your semi standard stuff to really specialized and of course expensive.
need some ranch door hardware? yes. need a pull in the shape of a butter fly? yes.
have the need to tell these guys thats been here for 75 years they need to change their name because you got confused? NO!
really, change their name? you going to pay for all the those changes, go to the county clerk, change your fictitious business name, all the banks merchant processing, etc etc… and abandon 75 years of history… because people cant figure things out? really? morons.
i only had to step one foot inside to realize why this place is the way it is. it was a neighborhood hardware store. with home depots and lowes taking over, they had to adjust. simple.

Awesome selection and friendly staff. I bought samples of many types of cabinet hardware to take home and decide. I returned all but one, and bought many of the types we chose for our new kitchen. No problems, no hassle.

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! I wish these guys cared more about the general public then contractors. First off I had to stand in line for over 20min just to ask for item prices. THAT’S RIGHT, THEY DON’T HAVE PRICES ON ANYTHING. I wish I would have worn a San Carlos Yuppy outfit, slipped on a pair of heals, and worn A swanky handbag, then theses guys might have treated me like the other women they were bending over backwards for. I’m sorry I only wanted four $ 20.00 class knobs for my new antique. Too bad no one wanted to help me after 20min standing in line JUST TO ASK ABOUT PRICING and then having the salesman turn his back on me once I had a 30sec emergency phone call! To the owner of Belmont Hardware: Not one of your salesman even cared I was clearly irritated and walking out the front door empty handed!

AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE! Left messages with details, no return phone call. Called again, was put on hold for 15 minutes. Finally hung up! From reading the other reviews, I’m glad I did hang up!

We were referred here by our countertop company. They had a huge inventory. The owner stopped by to talk to us twice while we were there and everyone was very friendly to us and our dog. It did take awhile to get help when we needed it, but when we did, folks knew what they were talking about and we found great cabinet knobs. I recommend definitely going here to see the selection and get inspiration.
That said, the selection trends toward the traditional, not the modern, so if your style is modern you might want to try elsewhere. There was a LOT of stainless steel handles that after awhile just all looked alike. We wanted something that was unique but not ugly. That took awhile.

We gave these guys another shot because they seem to be one of the only places around. This staff is beyond rude and arrogant. They started out by insulting our contractor because he didn’t like Baldwin. «He probably doesn’t know how to install it» they said. Oh really? The contractor with incredible recommendations and years of experience building building custom homes knows less than the punk kid working at the hardware store? Who are these idiot fooling?
Don’t waste your time, and certain don’t waste your money. As we’ve found, there are other places with staff ready and willing to help you.

GREAT customer service. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. They will have my business forever because of how well they treat me each and every time I go. The first time I went to get a new cylinder for a Baldwin entry set I purchased from an antique store. I also mentioned that I needed the latch reversed and probably needed a few extra keys. They reversed the latch and gave me several key copies for free, only charging me for the cylinder in the end. :-o I ordered a Baldwin deadbolt/​handle set for my back door and they helped me find the right style/​color to match the front door. This is the place to go if you want superior customer service.

This isn’t about their store but service which matters the most. You can buy what they sell online for way better prices.
Staff are rude and jerks. I had called twice and showed up in person to get them to service a multipoint lock. The day they promised to come, they didn’t show and wouldn’t answer or return phone calls. I was never rude to them once. Duck these guys.
Eventually, I just called Hoppe and the tech walked me through over the phone and fixed the problem. Saved me money.

Wow! I never thought I would want to give negative stars, but if I could I would… My husband just spent an hour and a half trying to get a lock set for our door. The staff is RUDE AND ARROGANT and could care less if you bought anything or not. Prices are high and extremely unreasonable. So why shop here? I know for certain that I (like a lot of other Unilocalers) will NEVER SET FOOT IN THIS PLACE AGAIN…
HomeDepot, Orchard Supply, AceHardware may not be the greastest but I bet they will be around a lot longer than this place…

This store has plenty of upside… wait, no, just one upside: lots of selection of knobs, pulls, etc. etc.
The downside is that the people who work there are AWFUL and rude. Beyond rude. Like, slam a phone down on you and yell at you for calling back rude.
Note to Belmont Hardware owners: your staff sucks. They are the same «bros» who will give you the eye if you dare step foot on the part of the sidewalk where they’re skating or rummaging through a garbage can, or what have you. They are rude, poorly trained heathens. Get rid of most of them, or all of them — your choice. For as nice as your selection is, your staff completely ruins the experience.
