Welcome to Obsidian Architecture — a boutique-​style architectural firm based in Bend, Oregon. My name is Mitch Darby and I am a licensed architect in Oregon with over twenty years of professional experience. In the first part of my career, with other firms, I was exposed to a wide variety of project types. I have worked on the smallest garage remodel to multi-​million dollar urban high-​rises. Now on my own, I specialize in high-​end residential architecture and custom home design; providing unique designs for unique clients.

Unlike home designs taken from planbooks or from production home designers, the projects I take on are entirely bespoke to their owners. I am involved from the initial consultation to the construction documents (detailed drawings and specifications). And I remain involved on through construction — assisting both home owner and contractor as the architecture becomes a reality. Obsidian Architecture takes full advantage of the latest parametric 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) design technology to maximize project coordination and minimize costly errors that can slow down or even derail the construction process. A happy by-​product of this software is the production of a virtual model — which can often illustrate architectural design ideas and spatial concepts better than a traditional 2D drawing.

Have we met? I’m Mitch Darby, an architect living and working in beautiful central Oregon. I spent the first twenty years of my architectural career working as an employee in other architectural firms and was involved in the design of a variety of very rewarding projects.

On my own, as the owner of Obsidian Architecture llc, I specialize in high-​end residential architecture and favor clear, crisp, geometric designs that satisfy their owner’s programmatic requirements in unique and memorable ways.

My history in brief is that I was born and raised in Gresham, Oregon. I graduated with a 5-​year B.A. in Architecture in 1994 and immediately found work at a large architectural firm in Portland. In late 1999, I sat for and passed the architectural licensing exams — officially becoming a registered architect in the State of Oregon in January 2000. In 2002, I relocated from Portland to Bend, Oregon and have been here ever since.
