Specialties
We guide hundreds of climbers to the summit of Mt. Hood every year — as the only AMGA accredited guide service that leads summits of all the Oregon Cascades, as well as peaks in the North Cascades of Washington.
We offer alpine climbing seminars, glacier climbing education, and nearly year-round ice climbing on glacier and water-ice. Our guides are experienced at providing first time mountaineers with a great educational experience. We also cater to experienced climbers looking for advanced instruction and difficult routes like the Cooper Spur, or the Jefferson Park Glacier.
We employ AMGA Certified Alpine Guides, and all of our guides have AMGA training. We can accommodate individuals and groups, and we design custom programs if the dates listed on our calendar don’t fit your needs.
History
Established in 1983.
Timberline Mountain Guides, Inc. and Smith Rock Climbing School were originally created in 1983 by Mike Volk. He operated the small company out of his house, right across the street from the world famous Smith Rock State Park. In 1989, Bill Soule became partners with Mike and the two ran the company until Roy Holland took the helm in 1992. In 2000, Steve Baldwin and Pete Keane took over for Roy and ran the company together until 2007. In 2008, Steve left to pursue other interests in Bishop, California and currently, Pete Keane runs the company.
