Berkeley Test Only Smog

This place is super! I passed my smog because of them! I forgot to get a new gas cap before going to get my test, this is an automatic fail! The very nice man doing my test asked if I wanted to borrow a gas cap until after the test when I could go get one for myself, what a save! my little old car passed smog and I went strait away to get a new gas cap so I could return the loan. Another place would have just failed me and that would have been that. Berkeley Test Only Smog made my day, and saved me time and money! What more could you ask for!

Super friendly guy, and the service is fast. I brought my car in at 3:30 on a Saturday and he was done within 15 minutes. This is my second time here, and after shopping around a lot to find him the first time, I’ll probably stick with this place.

I had the quickest and friendliest service and I was left a treat! I was able to easily schedule my appointment online for the next day. Thanks to Living Social for the discount. I will definitely use and refer again.

They do a good job on testing and helping to know what repairs would be necessary to pass. Don’t bother trying to reach them by phone or looking for their business hours on the door it isn’t going to happen!

Very friendly + quick (about 15min) & great service! $ 40 for the smog check for my Camry + $ 10 for the certification. Even offered free parking if I needed to stay in the area longer. I definitely will be coming back when I need a smog check!

I got my smog check done here this week and this was probably one of the most pleasant experiences as a consumer I’ve ever had. The owner (I think) was very friendly on the phone when I made an appointment. Then when I showed up 2 hours early he didn’t bat an eye and did the test ahead of schedule. He was calm and easy-​going and explained everything. I wish all experiences were like this, especially ones with my car.

In and out in ten minutes. Super professional. Only cost $ 59 with their coupon.

2 years ago, i comparison-​shopped numerous places — and this one had the lowest price. A few days ago, needing a new check, I called up the best 3 places from my search 2 years ago… and «Berkeley Test Only Smog» was still the best!
Great service each time. Best price. They accept CC and checks…

Called Murat this morning, who offered to perform a smog check for $ 50 as a special deal. He was really friendly, and worked on my car immediately. He also allowed me to take my time running errands in downtown Berkeley while my car was waiting in his lot. When he pulled my car upfront, he explained that my broken right mirror could easily be fixed; then he fixed it right then free of charge! (But I insisted on giving him a few bucks for his time.) Murat is a pleasant man running a pleasant business. And I left with a $ 20 off coupon.

I first went here two years ago for a smog test. The owner was really nice, and even offered me some Turkish delight. There were rude customers that said he was overcharging customers and stormed off. What he did for me was give me an additional $ 20 off just because I was so nice. Good karma!
I came back today, and it took about 10 minutes to do a test, and just a couple of minutes to get the test results. Even though the contract says «Cash Only,» they do ask what your method of payment is. Pretty nice! $ 79.95 for a smog test, regular price. Not bad.

Service was extremely friendly and accommodating. The most simple SMOG check I’ve experienced. Drove in, gave my information, he said it would be 15 minutes and it was!
They have an area to sit with magazines, or you can wander downtown for a few minutes, and then he drives your car right out to the sidewalk for you.
Simple and got my SMOG done with plenty of time left on my lunch break.

Was in the area and just looked them up on Unilocal,was the closest licensed test only station.
Disagree with others about no info upfront about no-​pass fee, everything was on the receipt that I signed before leaving my car there.
I believe Murat was the technician (at least on the paper that is the name). I was told to come back in 20 minutes or wait there. We walked around to get some gelato. When returned, the car was ready to go, he even moved it around so it was easy to pull back out to the street. I asked if I am ok to pay the registration fee online now, he explained the information will kick-​in overnight on DMV site, so I needed to wait until today. Which I did.
Will definitely recommend this place, great service, quick.

Pretty great place if your vehicle passes smog (don’t have any experience otherwise, fortunately). It’s fast, efficient, professional and polite. The price is ok. (usually there’s an online deal, where if you mention it you get a discount). I found this place by shopping around for the lowest price in the area. not sure if that’s still the case but I couldn’t find a place that was cheaper.

Name says it all. drive in, get a smog check, that’s it!
It’s right in downtown so you can go and get some boba or a snack and come back! He said 25 min and I came back in 25 min and boom! ALL DONE.
Service was super friendly, especially for someone who hates the time of the year when you do car stuff. Ever have a really scary experience when the smog check man is big and scary and scoffs at you? haha not here!
not five stars because it’s pretty expensive for a standard smog check. $ 80?! that’s crazy. be nice and you might get a deal for $ 60 (; but still, it’s pretty steeep! Then again, would you pay extra for the super fast easy nice convenience? i might.

The first time I went here I was a happy customer but this time, not so much. If you have a vehicle you think may fail the smog test — especially an older one or one you’ve had no hand in its maintainence history. Well… This is NOT the place you want to go. It is NOT ***A PASS OR DON’T PAY*** shop. If your vehicle fails the test, with their thirty percent discount you will pay $ 59.95!!! Beware, they won’t tell you this up front. After repairs, you will be gouged an ADDITIONAL $ 20.00 retest fee.
I will add they are very polite and professional but if your purse is flat and means, modest as mine are make sure to skip this place. I have nothing against these folks personally but charging more than $ 50 for a failed smog check when so many others around here are FREE!!? I don’t think so!!!
There is a different place I went to which I regret not returning to: 4 Less Smog Check. They don’t charge if the vehicle fails. They have a nice seperate waiting area w/​TV comfortable chairs etc…, and the staff there is also pleasant, polite and professional. Like many others, I hate dealing with car stuff. So when that dreaded vehicle registration renewal came up with the biennial* smog check, I put it off for as long as possible. Of course, it was nagging me in the back of my mind, so finally I decided to Unilocal a nearby smog check place and Berkeley Test Only Smog came up.
Berkeley Test Only Smog was friendly, fast, and incredibly helpful. The worker immediately got to work and pointed me towards the variety of magazines. He was also quick to ask me where I had heard about them, and when I mentioned Unilocal,he gave me $ 20 off the price! (so a total of $ 60 for a smog check)
I’m happy to give credit where credit is due and Berkeley Test Only Smog was great to me. I will have to be back the next time 2 years rolls by!
* Something I was curious about but didn’t actually look up until this review: biennial = once every 2 years; biannual = twice a year!

Rip off. And no retest. He wanted $ 110. I almost punched him right there. He saw that look in my eye and dropped it down to $ 70. Still not that good of a price. Smog ‘n Go is only $ 50 with a free retest. I would not recommend this smog check place to anyone.
There is this trend going on in the Bay Area where mechanics think they can charge more if you drive a 8 cylinder vehicle. Its never happened anywhere else but the Bay Area. I can’t wait to get out of Berkeley. I miss Sacramento.

I needed a smog check and I needed it fast. My car was in and out in 30 minutes, which gave me enough time to run an errand on Shattuck. The owner is very friendly. He offered me the last two pieces of his Turkish pistachio candy. I told him I saw them on Unilocal and got 20 bucks off. Overall, this place gets the job done, and they’re pleasant about it as well.
The only caveat is that you can get a smog check for cheaper than they offer. However, if you were on the run like me, you may accept that you give a little sometimes in the name of convenience.

I’m basically a happy camper: the owner is incredibly nice; my car passed (yay!); the service was fast; the business is conveniently located; your car is stored in the back lot until you wander over to pick it up. The one caveat is that I suspect that I didn’t pay the good price. The service cost me $ 80 all told, so I’m pretty sure that I didn’t get the $ 20 discount that you basically just have to ask for.
Yes, it’s my fault — I should have mentioned Unilocal,told him that I’m a student or mention that I had a paper coupon at home but forgot to bring it. Still, as I’ve said in previous reviews, I much prefer the system where there’s one price for all and you don’t pay an Idiot Penalty if you forget to ask for a price break.
I’ll come back any time I get a «test only» notice from the DMV. I hope that this won’t be soon, however!
