Cal Dive and Travel

Ok, I totally understand that due to the economy, some places have dramatically cut staff and reduced their opening hours. Cal Dive and Travel is one of these places. I have attempted to patronize this establishment twice. The first time, I went there during the 3 hour window they say they are open on Wednesdays. There was a sign «We are down the street. Please call this number». I did and got a voicemail. I left a message that I was at the store and hoping to buy scuba booties. No one called or came. I waited 15 minutes then left. I ended up at a shop in Alameda. I recently tried again, this time calling first during their stated hours of operation (which they recommend). There is a long message explaining they are single staffed and likely a few hundred feet away at the pool so leave a message and they will call you back as soon as possible. I left a message. NEVER got a call back. Really wonder why they even bother trying to run a retail dive shop (other than for lessons) if this is the effort they put into it.

I certified with them several years ago largely because I really was impressed with James Larsen. Unfortunately the classes were taught by his young son who didn’t know how to work with adults. It was a trying experience for me. Granted I am a klutz but his impatience showed!
I also gave up on the shop because of poor customer service and poor servicing of my gear. I recommend Original Steele’s in Oakland — much cheaper, nicer, and no attitude!

I got my SCUBA license here a few years back (maybe 2005?) and I remember having a very good experience. The class was very thorough and complete while still being fun. It’s family run and I’m pretty sure they teach NAUI.
On a personal note, I remember the instructor being really cute (qualification: I was 14 or 15 at the time).
Also: This has no affect on my review but their website is PAINFUL. I haven’t seen a website this ugly in a very long time. Come on guys, how much would it really cost to pay some high school kid to make something a little streamlined?

I took CalDive’s Beginner SCUBA course and was very pleased. The course took place over two weeks, Tuesday-​Thursday evenings. I thought about taking a weekend course in Monterey instead but was glad for the extra time to absorb everything I was learning so that I was confident with my skills in the water. James is a great (and very patient) teacher.
