Coast Mastering provides mastering for CD, vinyl and streaming formats as well as hi-​res mastering up to 192k and 5.1 surround sound mastering. We are a certified Mastered for iTunes provider. And we can do all-​analog tape-​to-​tape mastering.

We also offer audio restoration and archiving, including large and small-​scale digitization, restoration, remastering and archival consulting.

History

Established in 2007.

Coast Mastering is located in the historic Fantasy Studios building in Berkeley.

The studio’s stereo and surround rooms features Focal Stella Utopia EM front speakers; analog gear from EAR, George Massenburg Labs, Knif Audio, Maselec, and more; Bricasti conversion; and soundBlade mastering software. Piper Payne works in a stereo room with Focal Scala Utopia speakers, and including analog equipment from EAR, GML, Rupert Neve, Manley and Maselec. Coast Mastering also recently added mastering engineer Jessica Thompson, who specializes in archival and restoration. Thompson also works in Payne’s room, which has a Basis turntable with custom VTL phono stage and an ATR tape machine.

Business Owner

Michael Romanowski is a Grammy nominated mastering engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is owner and chief mastering engineer at Coast Mastering and co-​owner and founder of the analog tape label The Tape Project. Michael’s extensive credits include America, Third Eye Blind, Pat Monahan, Devotchka, Chuck Prophet, Train, Alasdair Fraser, Los Amigos Invisibles, Laura Pausini, Matt Nathanson, America, Jacqui Naylor, Will Kimbrough, The Dynamites, Ant Banks, Norton Buffalo, Too Short, Colorado Symphony, Chanticleer, Dredg, Pentatonix, Junior Toots, Bad Finger, and several thousand more. Michael is currently a Trustee of the The Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter (NARAS), Chair of the National Presidents Council, former president of the SF Chapter and serves on the National Advisory Council to the Producers & Engineers Wing.
