I have been a clinical psychologist and a teacher for the past 25 years. I was an adjunct faculty member at the Wright Institute and at Holy Names College where I taught Family Therapy, Couple Therapy, Addiction, and did clinical supervision. I have taught Family Recovery at UC Berkeley Extension since 1999. I previously worked in general psychiatry and in the addiction program at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland where I worked with adult addicts and their families. Subsequently, I did therapy with teen addicts and their families at Kaiser in Walnut Creek where I helped develop the psycho-​educational program for the Northern California region.

I highly recommend Dr. Karen Kaufman for couples or individual therapy. She is extremely thoughtful, intelligent, and sensitive. She does a great job of remembering what we said in prior sessions and carried threads easily from one session to the next. My (now husband) and I saw her when we were trying to decide whether or not to get married. She did a great job of listening to both of our perspectives without making the other feel alienated or «wrong.» She is easygoing and nonjudgmental while at the same time having some definite and clear insights. We saw her for about a year before I finally decided to take the plunge and get married!

Dr. Kaufman is an extremely insightful therapist. She
has the ability to quickly focus on the issues and peel off the layers
to facilitate awareness and progress on an individual’s problems.
Or a family’s dynamics that have contributed to the problems.
And, she makes herself available when you need her. no matter if it is a Sunday or late in the evening. If there is a demanding situation, she is there for you.

When I started seeing Karen, I felt like a pin at Albany Bowl on a busy night. My wife had passed away, I had two teenagers, and my doctor had told me in rather uncertain terms to quit drinking. I suddenly had a million issues and no one I could talk to.

I am very grateful to have been introduced to Karen. She has helped (prodded, forcibly perhaps) me into an active recovery program. As the fog lifted, she has helped me work through my grief. She has been invaluable as a guide through the charming little minefield called «raising teenagers.» I regard it as a tribute to Karen that one just turned twenty and we are both still alive. And sober.

Karen was my therapist for many years and I highly recommend her. She is genuine, kind, generous, not judgmental. Yea, yea, that IS what all therapists are supposed to be like, but what I am trying to say is Karen saved my life in so many ways. She is very insightful, wonderful, tender, and easy with herself. I always felt very comfortable and able to be completely honest with her and with myself in our sessions and in our professional, therapist/​client relationship. She is amazing and I am not nearly doing as well as I should to say that. =) Sam.
