Specialties
The best barbecue in the East Bay. We smoked all our meats including Beef Short Ribs (with a hunk of Prime Rib bigger than you fist on each bone), Baby Back & Spare Ribs. We also smoke brisket, chicken and pork. The pork is North Carolina style, it’s marinated in vinegar, whiskey, cayenne and Chipotle peppers. We also make all our own BBQ sauces, including Texas, Kansas City, North Carolina & South Carolina Mustard. Looney’s makes mouth watering hamburgers and makes their french fries from scratch.
If you are from the South, Looney’s makes Hush Puppies, Macaroni & Cheese, Greens, Sweet Potatoes, Slaw, and 8 other sides.
Looney’s also offers vegetarian options like the Portobello Burger, Vegetarian Pasta and several salads, including a Waldorf
Looney’s feature dessert is it’s Bread Pudding. A favorite for Bread Pudding coinsures.
History
Established in 2006.
In September 2008, Looney’s celebrated it’s second anniversary serving great BBQ to students of UC Berkeley and families in the East Bay. Ken, the owner, started Looney’s because of his love for BBQ. After spending 10 years in the Navy on the East Coast, Ken fell in love with North Carolina Style BBQ (vinegar based). He had a hard time finding any good BBQ so he started smoking Pork Butts in his backyard. He started giving some to his neighbors, when they started knocking on his door, Ken decided to open his BBQ joint near the Berkeley campus… thinking out of 30,000 students, a good percentage had to have a hankering for some good southern BBQ.
Meet the Business Owner
Ken L.
Business Owner
Ken’s parents were born and raised in Texas. Ken grew up in Southern California. Ken returned to Texas to earn a BS degree in Physics. He was recruited by the Navy to enter their Nuclear Power Submarine Program. Ken spent 10 years in the Navy traveling (and eating) all over the world.
Out of the Navy Ken’s first entrepreneurial exploit was opening two daycare Centers in Maryland that were open 18 hours/day, 7 days/week. After 5 years he sold his daycare to a national chain.
Ken returned to California where he wrote computer applications for 10 years while he was honing his smoking techniques.
In 2006 Ken opened Looney’s Smokehouse and have has been serving great tasting BBQ ever since.
