Specialties
We are an award-winning ecological design-build landscaping company. We design, install, and maintain gardens using Permaculture as our guiding design principle. Our gardens build songbird, butterfly, and pollinator habitat using mostly California natives. Our strong commitment to incorporating beauty with innovative ecological designs have earned us 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals at the SF Flower & Garden Show between 2008 to 2013. In addition, we were awarded the Sunset Western Living Award from Sunset Magazine in 2010, and also in 2010, earned CLCA’s Best Ecological Design Award.
In addition to building gardens, we design and build long-lasting stone structures such as retaining walls and patios using ancient techniques learned by Designer, Andrea Hurd by masters across the globe.
Permaculture Design, Ecological Design, Garden Design, Dry Laid Stonework, and Environmental Sculpture are what makes MG&D gardens unique.
History
Established in 2013.
Mariposa Gardening & Design, llc is a full scale Design Build Landscaping Company. It was reincorporated 2013 as an LLC from the original business, Mariposa Gardening and Design, which was established in 2005.
Andrea, Lead Designer and Owner, has been building and designing residential gardens using Ecological techniques since earning her Permaculture Certification in 1991.
Reincorporating is allowing us to grow as a business, and we are working toward making your experience with us as rewarding as possible. As a full service design, build and installation business, we tend to keep with our clients for years at a time.
Meet the Business Owner
Andrea H.
Business Owner
Creating art in the garden has been a part of Andrea’s life since she was a small girl. Growing up in rural Oregon, creating artistic projects out of natural materials was a form of play. In a high school Art History class, Andrea learned about the Earth Art movement, and became a big fan of Andy Goldsworthy.
In College, in the early 90’s, Andrea learned about Permaculture, and oncoming environmental issues such loss of habitat and drought.
Over the past 20+ years, Andrea has practiced Permaculture techniques as well as dry stacked stone building techniques in her garden designs and installations. As a member of The Stone Foundation, an international stonemason’s trade association, Andrea has gained training in the art of dry stacked stone building in England, Scotland, Mallorca and Cambodia. Her knowledge of the ancient techniques of these regions gives her work strength and structure, to which she adds inspiration to the designs through her own artistic vision.
